  31. I have a hand-loomed "black sweater with orange" (it's definitely orange, not gold) numbers of the year 1933 on the front. I'm wondering if you could help me figure out where it came from? The label says it was made in Pennsylvania. I am pretty sure when my cousin gave it to me she told me the relative of ours that owned it had gone to school in the east. I really like the sweater and want to give it to my grandson but I would like to know its origin. I've looked at your site and may have a couple ideas but would like your help. I've probably had it about 20 years myself. Can you give me any help or advice as to how to figure this out?

    • You may have already gotten your answer but if you could send a picture with the label I might be able to help. My first hunch is that it is a Princeton sweater because those are their colors and they wore their colors very prominently even in those days. They are very close to Pennsylvania, also. Happy to assist. I have a business that is all about team colors which is why I chimed in. Good luck.

  60. This list is just what I needed. My daughter is an animal lover. She gets up every morning and feeds all of her animals making sure to give them individual attention. She is most especially fond of her dogs. She can describe all of their personalities and knows what their favorite food and treats are. In fact, she likes her animals far better than she likes people. If I let her, she would stay home from school to hang out with her much loved pets.

The problem is that she has low self-esteem. Because of this, she does not always do well in school, though she is very smart. She just second guesses herself all the time. I want her to go to college and I know she has a limited interest in it. So I was trying to find a way to encourage her through her animals. I know that she has a couple of different colleges in mind and as silly as it seems, I might just do some subliminal persuasion using the college colors and her animals. I thought maybe I could decorate the crates and dog beds so that the college colors were connected with her animals. Of course I am doing other things to help her, but I think as far as college goes, this might be a great way for her to associate school with the things she loves most.

  61. I found it interesting reading through this list of colors and hearing the different descriptions of them that each school uses.  I went the University of Wisconsin and although the colors on the crest and on all the team uniforms are very simple red and white, they do not call it “red and white” the colors are “cardinal and white”.  Evidently, “red” did not do a good enough job of describing the regal nature of these colors.

The University of Michigan has two primary colors of yellow and blue, but again “yellow” does not get used and “maize” takes its place.  Why is this?  I’m not exactly sure, but even non-Michigan residents and fans know that this is what it is called and rarely will make the mistake of calling it otherwise.

Then I look at the University of Oregon, they of the every changing uniforms, and the only color I can positively identify with their institution is green.  I think yellow may be another, but I know at times they have sported a veritable rainbow of colors on their backs.  The Rainbow Warriors of Hawaii, ironically have not.

  62. Personally, one of my favorite things to do is watching college sports. I love doing this both on TV and in person whenever I have the time or the chance. To me, the games and activities are so much more pure and real than the professional sporting events we have in this country. I think the author understands this as well, and definitely took their time to make sure the list of the various college school colors was compiled as accurately and completely as possible.

As I read this, the thought occurred to me about why we are so fascinated with colleges. I think that sports is one of the biggest reasons. We see these games, especially the ones with national implications and the larger schools with a huge number of alumni.

Also, I think maybe that a lot of people think of college and become nostalgic. Thinking about their old school and sometimes even just seeing their college colors can cause them to take a little trip down memory lane.

  63. Weber State, Ogden, UT: Purple & White

  64. This is a wonderful resource. It's especially beneficial to a single mother like me who is apparently supposed to magically know what colors represent which college. This must be a guy thing for being inborn, because I don't know many women that just know all the college colors. But I am also tired of getting the "you're so old" glare from my son when I don't know what certain colors mean. I know it isn't an indication of my age (or really anything else). It just happens to be the name I have given to the glare he sometimes gives me when I am just not hip enough for him.

But, as a woman who really has no actual interest in college teams or colors outside of avoiding the glare, I was totally entertained by some of the comments on here. I knew people got serious about this stuff, but I guess I have never had a reason to see it all in one place. No offense at all meant. I mean, I collect miniature furniture and I am quite sure not a lot of people enjoy that. We all have our "things". Just remind me never to get my college colors confused around any of you any time soon.

  65. Thanks for posting this. I am not a person who is going to dress up my dog with college colors or anything, but I can't speak for my son. For me, this was more useful in my decorating needs just because I don't want to decorate and accidentally show support for a team that I don't actually care for. As for my son, he takes his lead from his father, who loves to watch football. To that end, this might be helpful when I get decorations for his room or something because I do not actually keep up with any teams, professional or college.

I can tell you that I live in Indiana and I am sick to death of seeing blue and gold as well as any shed of red, the color that seems to be so popular among college teams. I understand that people want to support their schools and all, but when it comes to over-priced colleges like Notre Dame, I would so much rather here about academic success than what their football team is doing or not doing. Speaking of which, check out their new helmets. They have a really great new look to them now! I think they still paint them before every game, but they don't look near as cheesy as they used to.

  66. Thanks for creating this list. I am not really into any team sports and when I think of college, it's not sporting events that I'm concerned with. But, I do have a son and I know one day he's going to want to look up some of the colors and try to make some kind of thing for his dog or something. So to that end, this is useful information.

I'll tell you what kind of drives me nuts though. And like I said, I'm not even a college ball fan or anything. What drives me nuts is when I go to the store and I want to buy something for someone who is a fan, but I can only find things for select schools. I live near South Bend, Indiana, so everywhere I go I can find Notre Dame gear, but I have no wish to buy anything to perpetuate the existence of a college that is so over-priced to begin with.

Wouldn't it be cool if colleges were celebrated because of their academic success rather than for their football team. I want to be out there yelling something to cheer on the future teachers of science and math, not for someone to catch a ball.
