The length and frequency of a dog’s walk should be determined by the dog’s breed, health and energy level. For example, you wouldn’t walk a senior Yorkie the same amount of time as you’d walk a two-year-old coonhound. Why?
-Yorkies are smaller and will tire out sooner
-The Yorkie is older and may have poor health compared to the Coonhound
-Coonhounds are high-energy dogs and require more exercise
-Coonhounds are built for more extended amounts of activity
In general, smaller breed dogs and ill dogs may need shorter walks than larger dogs or high-energy dogs.

It’s safe to say that all dogs should get at least one 15 minute walk twice a day. However, many of us have busy schedules, and even though it’s only 15 minutes, it can be challenging to do that twice per day. If your dog is healthy enough to handle it, it’s okay to walk him for 30 minutes, one time each day.

However, for some dogs, this won’t be enough. For example, I have a four-year-old treeing walk coonhound (TWC) mix and a one-year-old TWC and try to walk them for at least one hour every day. Honestly, they could use more exercise, but due to my schedule, this is what I’m able to do in the evenings. On the weekends I try to do longer walks with them. Plus, they also get to play all day long together, so they are expending some energy then too.

Ultimately, it’s crucial that you, as the pet parent, pay attention to how your dog handles walks. If your dog is still wired after a 15-minute walk twice a day, you may want to consider increasing the walk time. If your dog struggles with a 30-minute walk once a day, you may want to consider splitting that 30 minutes up into two or three shorter walks. You can also reach out to your vet and ask what exercise they recommend for your specific dog.
