*Waiting periods for California, Delaware, Louisiana, Maine, Mississippi, Nebraska, New Hampshire, and Washington are as follows:

  • Accidents - 0 days
  • Illnesses - 14 days
  • Cruciate Ligament Conditions - 30 days
  • Routine Care - 0 days

†Healthy Paws only offers hip dysplasia coverage to dogs enrolled before the age of six.

Figo offers shorter waiting periods for illnesses, accidents, and hip dysplasia. It also has more thorough coverage than Healthy Paws offers. Additionally, Figo’s underwriters have A- and A ratings by A.M. Best (a measurement of financial stability) while Healthy Paws’ is A++, both are good signs.

Another key deciding factor for you may be the age restrictions attached to Healthy Paws, which doesn’t enroll pets older than 14 years old. Additionally, Healthy Paws will not enroll pets older than four years old in New York state. And if you choose to enroll your pet with Healthy Paws after their sixth birthday, you’ll notice plan customization restrictions and exclusions for hip dysplasia coverage.

Figo wins in this category because it provides extensive coverage with shorter waiting periods on average and accepts pets of all ages.

Customer Service & Reputation

Customer Service & Reputation Tie

Figo and Healthy Paws have some of the best reputations in the pet insurance industry. The majority of customer complaints are from customers who, unfortunately, didn’t read or understand their policy.

Complaints include the company not paying a claim during a waiting period, not paying as much of a claim due to the deductible and reimbursement level selected, not covering pre-existing conditions, etc. We can’t fault Figo and Healthy Paws for these complaints because there are similar complaints about all pet insurance providers.

To avoid this disconnect, we aim to educate pet parents on all the ins and outs of pet insurance before they purchase. Then, should an emergency arise, they fully understand what is not covered by their policy.

Claim Processing

Claim Processing Winner

Figo averages a three-day claim process, with about 50% closed within 24 hours. On the other hand, Healthy Paws pays most of its claims within two days — among the fastest of all the companies we review.

Both companies have a history of processing claims in a timely fashion, with Healthy Paws having a slightly better reputation. So we declare Healthy Paws the winner of this category.

Price Of Policy

Price Of Policy Winner

Healthy Paws has no one-time fees or transaction fees, while Figo has a $15 one-time fee and a $2 transaction fee per month, but this can be waived if you pay annually.

Your premium price quote is based on your pet’s details (age, breed, location, etc.). We recommend obtaining quotes from each company for your specific pet. You can also visit our pet insurance comparison quotes to see a few sample prices we’ve gathered.

Figo almost always came out less expensive than Healthy Paws in the quotes we’ve run. However, remember that it’s always best to get quotes for your specific dog to compare what pet insurance could cost for you. You can use our pet insurance quote form to get multiple company quotes when you complete this one-quick form.

Additionally, both companies have annual deductibles, which is important if your pet experiences multiple accidents or illnesses during the policy period (one year).

Plan Customization

Plan Customization Winner

Figo gives you a lot of flexibility when building your plan and has no age restrictions. They offer a variety of annual payout options: $5,000, $10,000, or unlimited. You can also choose from many deductible options ($100, $250, $500, and $750) as well as reimbursement selections (70%, 80%, 90%, and 100%). With more customization options comes a greater range of premium prices to fit every budget.

Figo is one of the only providers we’ve reviewed to offer a 100% reimbursement option. But please know that not all of these deductible and reimbursement options are available in every state.

While Healthy Paws has unlimited claims for all plans, they do have some restrictions on reimbursement and annual deductible amounts, depending on your pet’s age at enrollment.

  • Dogs and cats 5 years and under:
    • 90%, 80%, and 70% reimbursement
    • $100, $250, and $500 deductible
  • Dogs and cats 6 and 7 years old:
    • 80%, 70%, or 60% reimbursement
    • $250, $500, or $750 deductible
  • Dogs 8 years and older:
    • 50% or 60% reimbursement
    • $750 or $1,000 deductible

Figo ultimately comes out on top because of greater flexibility to build your plan for your budget, no matter your pet’s age. They also offer a unique 100% reimbursement option.
