I’m a new dog owner, and I recently adopted a Lab mix named Tod. He’s a total goofball, full of energy, and loves rolling around in the grass and sniffing everything in sight. The only issue is he’s a bit overweight—the vet said he needs to slim down a little, so we’re working on better portion control and more exercise. Since he’s outside a lot, I want to make sure I’m protecting him from fleas, ticks, and heartworms, but I’m overwhelmed by all the options.
I’ve seen people mention monthly chewables, topical treatments, and even collars, but I’m not sure what’s best. I’d love some advice on what works well, what’s easy to give, and if there’s anything I should avoid—especially since I know some medications are dosed based on weight.
Do you prefer chewables (like Simparica Trio, NexGard, or Heartgard) or topical treatments (like Frontline or Advantage)? Is a flea/tick collar a good option, or should I stick with meds? Should I be looking for an all-in-one solution or separate heartworm and flea/tick preventatives? Any there brands that have worked really well (or not so well) for your dogs?
Also, since Tod is overweight, do I need to be extra careful about dosing or side effects?
Thanks in advance!
I went with the NexGard PLUS chewable after talking with my vet. It’s a monthly dose that protects against heartworm, fleas, and ticks all-in-one.
