I’ve been dog-sitting an Australian Shepherd, and I recently noticed some brown fur staining on one of his legs. The spot is about the size of a plum. He doesn’t seem to be in pain, but I notice that he licks the area pretty regularly. Should I be worried? His owners are unreachable, and I’m not sure if I need to bring him to the vet.

Sometimes, excessive licking can cause a dark spot on the fur. I’ve seen this in my dogs, and it can be caused by a few things. If it were me, I would watch it and let his parents know as soon as possible. If he starts showing signs of pain, then definitely reach out to a vet.
