Does my dog hate my hamster?

I just bought a hamster (I went into the pet store for dog treats and came out with a new pet!). I’ve brought her home, and my Doxie doesn’t seem to be getting used to her. She’s constantly whining at the hamster crate, even when the hamster’s not making any noise. Will my dog get used to the hamster? Any tips? :unsure: Thanks

Great question. We had a dog and a hamster for a number of years and while they never really “got along” we were able to keep both pets w/o one eating the other lol. You’ll want to gradually introduce them to each other and closely watch their initial interactions. As far as their living spaces (crate for the hamster) – try and keep it in an area that the dog wouldn’t consider their prime territory. And separate their feeding spaces (don’t feed them together or next to each other). All these things can help reduce tension between the two animals, and hopefully over time they’ll get along. But also be prepared for the possibility that they won’t, and make sure you prioritize their health and safety over their ability to be together.
