My children really want a puppy, but I am not sure we are ready to take on the work. I’ve had dogs before, but not for many years, and never with kids. Are there any breeds that are better for children?

It’s a good idea to talk to your kids and explain all the duties and work involved in taking care of a dog. You may even want to try to spend time at a local shelter or with a friend’s dog to get them used to being around animals. Keeping a friend’s pup for a sleepover is a great way to see how your dogs interact and how much work a pup will add to your life. You can also consider a puppy contract, which helps everyone stay on top of what they need to do to help with the dog.

This question also depends on the children’s age. Young kids are probably going to say that they will be happy to help, but in reality, unless they are really advanced for their age, I wouldn’t depend on much help unless you have teenagers or older. With that said, I think being raised in a house with a dog is one of the best experiences you can provide for your children. We’ve compiled an article with the best family dogs that should help you out.
