My dog HATES the doorbell. She also barks if anyone comes to the door or she hears someone just outside the house. We knew Halloween would be a pain for her. When we leave the house, we let her hang out in our finished basement, so that’s where we put her for the hour we spent walking around our neighborhood with our kids trick or treating. We saw so many of our neighbor’s dogs being calm and well-behaved. I found myself asking, “Why do some dogs behave like this while others behave like mine?” I really feel it comes down to their breed makeup, at least a portion of it. Some breeds are more chill, while others are a bit more rambunctious. So I’m curious, how did your dog do with Halloween and what breed is your dog?
My dog is similar to yours. She is overly protective of the home. She’s happy to meet people, but she needs to be able to greet them, and then she’ll chill out. She’s a 10-year-old coonhound mix that we rescued when she was 3. I don’t know her experience before us, but I chalk her “quirks” up to past experience or her breed mix. I don’t know if she has a bad experience that she is reminded of when we have people she doesn’t know come to our home. So I try to be understanding of that. But I also don’t know if she’s just being crazy and overprotective. We have tried sooooo hard to break this behavior of hers, but she’s worn us down. So we just accept it, and if we know of a situation ahead of time that will get her barking, we try to prepare by leashing her or putting her in a separate room. For Halloween, she spent the night hanging out in our living room, which is closed off from the front of the house. So, she wasn’t able to bark aggressively at the door at people.
My dogs had a pretty hard time. They do not like the doorbell and start barking like crazy when people come in the yard. We are in a new house this year, so they were on extra alert. I tried keeping them in the back room, but they got too agitated. My older dog is starting to show signs of dementia, and the high activity was very disorienting for her. So, eventually, I just left a bowl of candy in the driveway with a note. My dogs are mixes; one is a Pit Lab mix, and the other is a Poodle-Beagle mix. I’m not sure if I will hand out candy next year; it was a bit too much for the doggies this year.
