What’s the safest way to remove a tick from a dog?

I just found a tick on my dog and I’m low-key panicking. I know you’re supposed to remove it carefully, but there’s so much conflicting info out there—twist it, don’t twist it, use tweezers, don’t squeeze it, etc.
What’s the best and safest method you’ve used to get a tick out completely without leaving the head behind?
Also, should I be doing anything after removal, like disinfecting or watching for signs of illness?
