My pup has started breathing fast, even when not exercising. Kind of looks like panting to me, but it’s also not a hot day. Should I be concerned?

Sorry to hear that! There are a number of reasons why dogs could be panting. Changes in the environment (like the new daycare) or routine can cause stress, leading to panting. Your dog could be feeling unwell. So if the panting persists or you’re noticing other unusual symptoms (e.g., coughing, lethargy, changes in appetite, or energy level), it would be a good idea to have them checked by a vet. They can determine if there’s an underlying medical condition.

Hi Rilbie, did you contact your vet, or has your pup’s excessive panting gotten better? I’m concerned because this can be a sign of some serious health conditions.

Thanks for your reply @Sadie Cornelius and your concern @Sally Jones ! I ended up going into the vet and turns out it’s anxiety! We had someone from our household who was staying for a few weeks just leave and apparently our pup was really attached to them so got all anxious when they suddenly weren’t around. Dogs are so amazing!

Our vet gave us some calming supplements to give our pup, and while they work great they’re quite expensive. What brands would y’all recommend?

Hi Rilbie Dilbie, I did a ton of research recently into the best over-the-counter products for dogs suffering from anxiety. Please read my article on the best calming treats for dogs for my top recommendations. I’ve included anti-anxiety soft chews, peanut butter, gummies, and other options, and most aren’t too expensive. Hope you can find a good solution!
