I have a 12-year-old mixed breed who’s had very few health issues so far. But I’m worried about major costs as he gets older. In this case, is pet insurance worth it? I’ve looked into it, and insurance premiums look really high because he’s older.

Pet insurance is worth it if you can afford the monthly premium for your senior dog. As pets age, they’re more likely to have an accident or illness. Almost half of dogs over the age of 10 develop cancer, and 1 in 5 dogs experience mobility issues. Both of these can be costly to treat. The best pet insurance company for your dog is specific to his health. My article about the best pet insurance for older dogs can help you decide if pet insurance is worth it for you and which company could be the best fit.
There are ways to make pet insurance more affordable for your senior dog:

      • Lower the reimbursement rate
      • Lower the payout limit
      • Increase the deductible
      • Pay the premium annually instead of monthly
      • Consider accident-only coverage instead of accident-and-illness coverage

Kimberly, I have an aging Labrador Retriever who’s not insured but I’m seriously considering it. Are there any companies that you’d recommend?

@mississippi_leg_hound I definitely recommend insurance for your Lab. I grew up with Labs, and many family members have them. Unfortunately, each of them has had an illness at the end of their lives that has required expensive vet care. Here’s an article I have dedicated to pet insurance for labs.
