I signed my recently adopted dog up for training classes. The trainer uses pinch/prong collars. I didn’t know this when we signed up for the classes. I’m not sure how to feel about this. They look like a torture device, but the instructor explained how to properly use it. I’m just uneasy about how humane these collars are. Any input is appreciated.
Hey there, yes this is a controversial topic among dog trainers. Some say they are safe (when properly trained on how to use them) but other trainers stick to more positive reinforcement methods such as praise and reward (vs corrective behavior). It also depends on the size and breed of your dog. You shouldn’t use prong collars on smaller dogs or ones with sensitive necks such as pugs or Cavaliers. We had a trainer that tried to use one with our Cav and was skeptical too, we ultimately didn’t end up using them (and feel like they did more physical and mental harm than good). That’s just my two cents though! Hope that helps!
