My parents are in their late-60s and are dead set on getting another dog. They lost their Labrador last winter and are ready for another Lab puppy. They’re both in good health now, but Labs are so active and need a lot of exercise. I’m concerned that as they age, my mom and dad won’t be able to handle it. Is there another breed you’d recommend that may be easier to handle?

Hi there, MichaelJ. How exciting that your parents are ready for a new dog. As a longtime Lab owner, I understand your concern about a larger breed. They can be a handful and are very physically taxing to walk if they pull. There are plenty of smaller breeds that will make amazing companions for your parents. Cocker Spaniels and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are known for their sweet, gentle personalities. They are medium-sized, so you can still get out for walks and activity, but they don’t have the physical strain of a bigger breed like the Labrador. A Mini-Goldendoodle might be a good fit, too. They are lovable, active, and a lot easier to handle than a full-size Lab. Best of luck, let us know what breed they decide on!

I am partial to bulldog breeds and mixes. French Bulldogs are super cute, very affectionate, and don’t get too big. Plus, they don’t need a ton of exercise. My grandma just loves her Frenchie, and they are the best of friends. The pup has been a great companion to my grammy and helps get her out of the house a bit for daily walks. I’m so glad she got her.
