Yesterday, I took my pup for a walk. He was really excited to go since he hadn’t been out for a couple of days due to really cold weather. He was so excited he started pulling really hard on his harness and leash. After about a minute of walking, he started making this terrible snorting/coughing type of noise. It was super loud and sounded kind of like he might be choking. We stopped walking and sat down, and I slowly rubbed his back. After a little while, it seemed to stop, and we started walking again. he had about three of these episodes and then seemed completely fine.

I looked up what this could be and found out about reverse sneezing. I think this is what happened, but that was so scary. I really don’t want it to happen again. What triggers reverse sneezing in dogs, and what can I do to prevent it? And is this something we should go to the vet for? Is there anything I can do to help resolve it faster while it happens?

The cause of a reverse sneeze is unknown, but studies suggest that any irritation to the nose, sinus passages, or back of the throat can trigger an episode. Reverse sneezing can also occur after periods of over-excitement or over-stimulation.

An episode of reverse sneezing isn’t harmful to your dog, but you may want to give some relief if the spell lasts longer than a minute. Remedies include:

      • Hold your dog’s nostrils closed for a second using your thumb
      • Gently stroke your dog’s neck and try to calm him
      • Lightly blow in his face
      • Take your dog outside with fresh air (or inside if you think an outdoor irritant is causing the episode
