I have done some dog sitting for friends, and now an acquaintance of one of those friends asked me how much I charge. I have no idea where to start. I enjoy doing it for free for friends, but perhaps there is a business opportunity. What is the going rate?

I usually leave my dogs at a kennel and pay about $35 per night. This includes special treats, food, and outdoor playtime. But this is the middle option; there is a basic stay, which is cheaper, and a deluxe option that costs more. With the middle option, they get a private “room” with a bed and a potty area. With my other dog, who is a little more sensitive, I pay a private sitter. Mine charges $50 a day, but my pup is high needs and gets medication, as well as has anxiety, so she needs a lot of attention. She gets two walks a day at this rate.

We have a family friend who will stay at our house, and they only charge $25 a night. I think this is very cheap, but again, it is a family friend, and they don’t treat it like a business. I would ask the new people what they are comfortable paying, perhaps something around $25-$40 a night would make sense for both of you.
