What is the best way to change my dog’s food? She’s gone through some tummy issues, and we need to change her food, but I don’t want to cause more issues by changing things too fast.

Our best advice is to talk with your vet before making major dietary changes. Switching off your current food too suddenly can cause stomach upset, indigestion, diarrhea, and even blood in a dog’s stool. A gradual transition from the old diet to the new diet is best. The best way to transition your dog’s food is to mix your current dog food with the new dog food for at least 5 days. This allows your dog’s digestive tract to adjust without stomach issues.

Just to include my personal experience. Over the years with my 12-year-old pup, I’ve tried transitioning my dog to new food following what Michelle suggested. Following this schedule has helped with a few, but one not so much. If you’ve tried this schedule, and it’s not working, you may want to go back to your original dog food for a few weeks. Then try another one.
