I sure am glad I signed my dog up with pet insurance when I did. My dog is still in the puppy months and this week she decided to chew on one of my shoes while I was showering. I saw the shoe torn to pieces and quickly looked through trying to see if any was missing (fearing she had ingested some). I wasn’t able to verify it was all there. So we took a little trip to the vet. After an X-ray, the vet confirmed she had ingested some shoe, so she induced vomiting. After some monitoring, they did a repeat X-ray to see if it was all out. Thankfully it was. But after the multiple X-rays, office fee, vomit inducing, and monitoring, I had a few hundred dollars in vet bills. Submitted the claim to my insurer and waiting for reimbursement now. I’m so glad I took the time to sign her up for insurance so I didn’t have to worry about the expenses of her treatment.
Now onto my question, I have Pets Best. I’ve read that some insurers don’t cover repeat incidents for foreign body ingestion. Does anyone know if Pets Best is one of them?
I don’t have insurance for my dog, but your post makes me wonder if I should get it. Thankfully, we haven’t had any major issues yet, but I didn’t realize there were limits on things like ingesting objects. I think I have a lot to learn. I’d love to know more about Pet’s Best and any other company that offers coverage for adult dogs. My pup is almost 4.
@SillyGoose, Pets Best has the following in its sample policy under other exclusions (#6g in section 5):
Conditions arising from a repetitive and specific activity that leads to decontamination (e.g., the induction of vomiting), medical or surgical Treatment of your Pet, if the same or a similar activity occurred two times within 18 months prior to the Treatment date, whether before or after the Policy Effective Date.
This could mean that if your dog frequently chews or eats things she shouldn’t, Pets Best may exclude coverage for closely occurring instances. Check your policy to see if there is similar wording in yours.
