My dog recently had a root canal, and after speaking with the surgeon, I learned that I need to be more diligent with my dog’s dental hygiene. What’s your go-to routine for your dog’s teeth? *Bonus if you have any specific products you recommend; I’m so overwhelmed with the options out there!
It is recommended that you brush your dog’s teeth at home every day. However, we have been doing this once a week (every Friday night) for years, and the vet has said their teeth look clean. This definitely can vary by dog, just like it does for us humans (but I would not recommend any human waiting a week between teeth brushing!). We also give our dogs daily dental chews to help maintain between brushing.
We use the Virbac toothpaste and toothbrush set and our dogs LOVE the taste of the toothpaste. We find the dogs are more tired at night and, thus, more willing to let us do things they might find more intrusive in the morning hours.
Hope these tips are helpful and you can get started soon. Your dog will thank you when they don’t need their teeth pulled!
Thank you for these tips @Michelle Schenker! This is so helpful! I never saw my parents brush our dogs’ teeth when I was a kid, so when I heard someone talking about it I was totally unaware. I’ll definitely look into some dental chews and that toothbrushing set you shared!
