Naming a new furry friend can be both exciting and challenging. It’s always a good idea to have several in mind so you can land on one that fits and everyone in your home agrees upon. When naming your Boxer or  Boxer mix, there are several directions you can go. Looking at a list of popular Boxer dog names can give you an ideas of the names that people give their Boxers, which can kick-start your imagination.

While it’s considered poor form to name your human child based on their appearance (a kid with a birthmark shouldn’t be named Spot), it’s quite a common practice for dogs. We’ve included names for the three most common Boxer colors: brindle, fawn, and white. Fair warning: some of the names could make you hungry.

Another common way to name a dog relates to its size. Boxers can weigh between 55 and 71 pounds, putting them between medium- and large-sized dogs. Please don’t tell them they could be categorized as medium-sized because they may want to box you over it. That’s why we’ve included a wide array of big dog names. You’ll also want to know about other popular dog names. We’ve listed the current top dog names for male and female dogs to help you in your quest.

    Dog Naming Tips

    Boxer Dog Chewing Toy

There are a few things you should think about when naming your Boxer that we haven’t already mentioned. Since your dog’s name is one you’ll be shouting out for years to come, it’s a good idea to approach the naming process with care.

Tip 1: Wait To Name Your Boxer

Sometimes it’s better to wait a few days after you get a dog, to name it. When you first get your dog, its true personality won’t be apparent because the dog is just excited to be in a new home.

Imagine naming your Boxer Fang only to find out he’s just a big softy who wants nothing more than to lick and cuddle and should be named Barney.

Tip 2: Choose An Easy To Say Name

Names with just one or two syllables roll off the tongue more easily. If you choose a longer name, you’re likely to end up shortening it. Alexandria becomes Alex, Mr. Bojangles becomes Jangles.

Tip 3: Pick A Name That’s Easy To Hear

Yes, most dogs have excellent hearing. However, if you have a hearing-impaired white Boxer, you should choose a name that is easy to hear. Consider finding a name for your hearing-impaired Boxer that starts with a hard consonant and ends with a “y” sound. Charlie is better than Charles, and Brandy is better than Brenda.

Tip 4: It Shouldn’t Sound Like A Command

When your dog gets a new name and is learning new commands, they shouldn’t confuse their new name with commands. For example, Juno sounds too much like “no,” Neil sounds a lot like “heel,” Shay sounds similar to “stay,” and Jake could easily be mistaken for “shake.”

Tip 5: If It Doesn’t Fit, Change It

If you use a bright, happy, sing-song voice, your new dog should answer to anything. You’ll want to try several names on for size until one fits. You can call out, “Porkchop! Here Porkchop! You’re such a good dog, Chester. Aren’t you a good dog, Cletus? Do you like belly rubs, Star-Lord?”

Eventually, a name is bound to make both you and your dog happy, even if it’s a few days (or weeks) later.

Tip 6: Don’t Name Them After A Family Member Or Friend

It might seem funny to give your dog your brother’s name, but it can make for some awkward conversations with your mom like, “Daniel pooped on the floor again.” While naming a dog after a dead loved one might be cathartic for you, you’ll want to consider that it could be hurtful to others and the way they are mourning.

    Tip 7: Consider Color

Boxers come in brindle, fawn, or white, which can be an excellent inspiration for their name. Choco would work great for a brindle Boxer, Brown Sugar for a fawn Boxer, or Meringue for a white Boxer.

    Tip 8: Think About Temperament

Your dog’s temperament is definitely important in determining what to name your Boxer. It can be both an inspiration and a way to whittle down your list to eliminate names that don’t fit. If your Boxer is on the grouchy side, you might choose Oscar. A Boxer who is always happy to see you might be best named Sunny.

    Final Thoughts

When you bring a new dog home, finding the best name for him may prove even more important than finding the best harness or dog food for your Boxer. When a piece of equipment doesn’t work, you can always try something different, but a name is for keeps.

Choosing a name based on popular boxers, color, size, and popular dog names is only the beginning. If you’ve found a name on this page, congratulations. However, there are other directions you can take if these don’t work for you.

We also have lists of unique and cute names, tough dog names, and big dog names. You’re sure to find something that suits both you and your dog on one of our inspiring lists.
