Are You New To CBD For Dogs?

If you don’t know much about CBD (cannabidiol) and pets, you can learn more from our comprehensive reviews of the best CBD oils for dogs. Plus, we explain the difference between CBD and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the chemical responsible for producing the “high” associated with marijuana. CBD doesn’t produce that high.

Best CBD Subscription Boxes For Dogs

We based our top picks and reviews on several factors, the most important of which is the quality of CBD products. There are a ton of pet CBD oils, treats, and other items on the market, but the quality and ingredients can vary widely. I only included companies in the top three that offer the purest and safest formulas for your pup.

You might be confused when you see the word “hemp” in company names and our reviews. What gives? CBD derives from the hemp plant, so many manufacturers and sellers use the term “hemp” when referring to their products. However, all the products we review here are CBD products.

One thing to note is that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved CBD or hemp-containing products for use in animals as drugs, food supplements, or feed supplements. Always talk to your vet before adding CBD to your dog’s regular routine, and be sure to read the ingredients in any supplement you give your pup, as these are not highly regulated.

Our Personal Experience With CBD For Dogs

I spoke with several of our Canine Journal team members, who are also pet parents with experience giving their pets CBD, to learn more about how and if CBD works for dogs.

I work at a health food store that also caters to pets. Over the years, I’ve heard overwhelmingly positive feedback regarding people giving CBD oil to their dogs.

What makes this supplement so unique? CBD supports the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which maintains homeostasis, or balance, in the body. Because of the modulatory role of the ESC, CBD offers potential therapeutic benefits for various body processes, including immune function, cognition, stress response, metabolism, and inflammatory responses. That being said, the two most frequent conditions I see this supplement used for are pain and anxiety.

I’ve heard countless stories of dogs struggling with joint pain getting the pep back in their step after starting CBD. It’s also a popular selection for dogs with anxiety. In particular, it’s an excellent choice for supplementing during times of high stress, such as during Fourth of July fireworks or trips to the vet.

Tara Maurer, Retail Health Consultant & Pet Owner

Another dedicated pet parent and team member shared that CBD is helping her dog, who suffers from chronic physical pain and anxiety.

My dog Daisy, a Lab Pitbull mix, is 13 years old and suffers from arthritis, as well as tumors. She has a good amount of daily pain, as well as anxiety. After discussing options with the vet, Daisy has started a CBD regimen. I have seen some very promising results. The CBD helps calm her down and has helped her to be more comfortable moving around. I keep both CBD treats and oils on hand for her. They help her move around better during the day and keep her calm and comfy at night.
