  • in reply to: Can I give my dog Tylenol to help with pain relief? #132733

No, any over-the-counter pain medicine containing acetaminophen (aka Tylenol) or ibuprofen is not safe for dogs. These medications can cause serious GI issues and can be fatal for some dogs.

For joint pain, we recommend giving your dog a joint supplement. You can learn about the best options in our joint supplement article. Be sure to talk to your vet before giving any new medication to your dog.

Annual vet visits are not covered under pet insurance policies. They can be covered through a wellness plan.

Each provider handles emergency exam fees differently. Some offer coverage for exam fees in their base policies, others require an add-on, and some offer no coverage at all. The coverage table in my pet insurance comparison includes “vet exam fees” as one of the columns. Look there to see how some of the best pet insurance companies handle coverage for exam fees.

You can request your policy be canceled by calling or writing Trupanion.

    • Call: 888-733-2685
    • Fax: 866-405-4536
    • Email: info@trupanion.com
    • Mail: Trupanion USA, 6100 4th Ave South, Suite 200, Seattle, WA 98108

Be sure to get a confirmation of your termination request by email or mail. If you’d like to learn more, our team has written an entire article on how to cancel Trupanion.

I’ve been a pet insurance expert for over 10 years and have run thousands of quotes for pet insurance companies. Unfortunately, you aren’t alone in your premium increase. On average, Trupanion is typically the most expensive provider compared to other insurers. If you need help choosing another provider, let me know. I’d be happy to help answer any of your questions. You can compare the best pet insurance companies in my article, which has many comparison tables.

Great questions! Switching to a new provider is easy because you’re just signing up for pet insurance like you did with Trupanion. However, suppose your pet has been diagnosed with any condition while insured with Trupanion (or before insurance kicked in). In that case, it may be excluded by the following company you sign up with.

Maintaining your Trupanion policy is wise until all waiting periods have passed with the new insurer you sign up with. That way, you aren’t uncovered if your pet suffers an accident or illness. This will result in you paying two pet insurance premiums for a short period.

    • I use Figo to insure my 10-year-old Coonhound mix.
    • I’ve filed several claims, all covered and reimbursed within a few days.
    • Yes, I’ve been pleased with the coverage. Everything I’ve expected to be covered has been so far.
    • I haven’t run into an instance yet where I wish my policy covered something that is excluded.

I’m a writer and pet insurance expert for Canine Journal, so if you have any specific questions regarding pet insurance, I’d be happy to help!

in reply to: Will Pet Insurance Pay For Allergy Testing? #132661

Great question! Unfortunately, because your dog is already experiencing symptoms, allergies will most likely be determined a pre-existing condition and will be ineligible for coverage from most insurers. However, suppose your dog has not been having allergy symptoms, is insured, and all waiting periods have passed. In that case, pet insurance may cover the cost of allergy testing if a veterinarian requests it. I’ve written an article that goes into more detail on whether pet insurance covers allergies and allergy testing, which you can learn about.

in reply to: Is pet insurance cost-effective for senior dogs? #132621

Pet insurance is worth it if you can afford the monthly premium for your senior dog. As pets age, they’re more likely to have an accident or illness. Almost half of dogs over the age of 10 develop cancer, and 1 in 5 dogs experience mobility issues. Both of these can be costly to treat. The best pet insurance company for your dog is specific to his health. My article about the best pet insurance for older dogs can help you decide if pet insurance is worth it for you and which company could be the best fit.
There are ways to make pet insurance more affordable for your senior dog:

    • Lower the reimbursement rate
    • Lower the payout limit
    • Increase the deductible
    • Pay the premium annually instead of monthly
    • Consider accident-only coverage instead of accident-and-illness coverage

I don’t have much experience in this, but I’ve been able to potty train my female dogs more easily than my male dogs. The males always want to mark everything and anything. I remember putting up our artificial Christmas tree one year being highly tempting to our male dog at the time.

This is a big reason why I switched to Sunday for my lawn care. Sunday’s products avoid harsh chemicals like SpeedZone. In my Sunday Lawn Care Review, you can read all about my experience with Sunday and see before-and-after photos.
