If you’re like me, your dog is your best friend, emotional support buddy, and four-legged soulmate all rolled into one. So when my pup Tiny’s gotcha day comes around, I go all out with a little celebration, complete with a homemade, dog-friendly cake.

As tempting as it is to buy a traditional birthday cake for your pup, most human cakes are loaded with sugar, dairy, chocolate, or artificial sweeteners like xylitol, all of which can be harmful (and sometimes deadly) to dogs. Xylitol and chocolate are especially toxic, and even vanilla cake can cause your canine companion tummy trouble.
Instead, whip up a treat that’s just for them. Trust me, they won’t miss the frosting.
The good news? Dog owners now have many options to provide healthy and beautiful cakes for dogs (and ice cream) made especially for doggie bellies.

My Go-To Dog Birthday Cake Recipe (Tried & Tasted!)
Let me tell you about Tiny, my 13-year-old rescue Cocker Spaniel mix with a big personality and an even bigger love for two things: human food and being the center of everything.

I rescued him when he was just 6 months old, and ever since, we’ve celebrated his “adoptaversary” every year with a little family party and a homemade doggy cake made just for him.
A few years ago, though, things got tricky. Tiny developed sensitivities to grains, gluten, and dairy, which meant most dog cake recipes were off the table. No flour, no yogurt, no problem, right?
Well, it took some trial and error, but I finally landed on the perfect solution: a grain-free peanut butter and apple cake that’s totally tummy-friendly and Tiny-approved.

This recipe is a great option for all kinds of dietary requirements. It’s grain-free, gluten-free, dairy-free, corn-free, soy-free, and sugar-free. Best of all, it’s incredibly easy to make, and the ingredients are affordable.

Grain-Free Peanut Butter Apple Dog Birthday Cake
Equipment
- 1 ramekin or jumbo (or regular) muffin tin
Ingredients
- 3 Tablespoons dog-safe peanut butter
- 1 egg
- 1/2 apple, grated or finely chopped
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- coconut oil spray
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F.
- Mix together all ingredients until smooth.
- Grease a jumbo muffin tin or ramekin with coconut oil spray. Because Tiny is a small breed, I separate this into 2 servings and just use a regular muffin pan.
- Spoon in your batter.
- Bake for 20 minutes, or until it turns golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
- Let cool for a few minutes, and then slide the cake out of the baking equipment.
- Cool on a cooling rack for 10 minutes.
- Frost with a small amount of peanut butter (optional) and serve.
Notes

- I usually chop up the apple because Tiny likes the crunch, but if you want a smoother cake, I recommend grating the apple for a finer cake.
- If your pup can tolerate a small amount of dairy, you can subsitute your peanut butter frosting with plain, unsweetened Greek yogurt for a more traditional birthday cake frosting look.
- I also usually sprinkle a few of Tiny’s small dog treats or chopped up cooked bacon bits on top for added crunchy flavor.

This recipe is my go-to cake recipe, which I make for my dog’s adoption day anniversary every year. I originally got it from Love From The Oven. I like to celebrate my dog’s adoption day all week by giving her a piece of cake every day until it’s gone. She loves it! 2. Double Layer Meat Cake Recipe
This double-decker meat cake is packed with chicken baby food, eggs, and shredded carrots, and topped with crispy bacon crumbles and a yogurt “frosting.” It’s basically a savory showstopper — perfect for dogs who want the whole party focused on them.
Ingredients
- 3 cups flour (rice or oat flour is easier on some pups’ tummies)
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- ½ cup softened margarine
- 6 eggs
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 5 oz. chicken baby food
- 2 cups grated carrots
- 1 large container of plain Greek yogurt
- 4 strips of bacon
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 325°F.
- Grease two round cake pans (8”). You may also want to flour the pans, although this is optional.
- In a small bowl, combine the flour and baking powder and set aside.
- In a medium bowl, beat the eggs until well blended.
- In a large mixing bowl, beat the margarine. Add the eggs and oil, mixing until well blended.
- Add the chicken and carrots. Continue beating.
- Slowly add the flour mixture until it is all well blended.
- Pour half the batter into each of the baking pans.
- Bake for approximately one hour. Test the doneness by inserting a toothpick into the center of the cakes; if it comes out clean, the cakes are ready to be removed from the oven.
- Let the cakes cool for at least 10 minutes before turning them out onto wire racks to cool completely.
While the cakes are cooling, fry the bacon so that it is very crisp. Drain, then cool and chop into small pieces.
To ice and decorate the cake, place one layer on a serving plate and cover it with 1/3 of the yogurt. Place the second layer on top of that and cover it with the remaining yogurt. Be sure to ice the sides as well. Sprinkle the crumbled bacon over the top.
3. Chicken & Carrot Pupcakes
Made with cooked chicken and carrots, these little pupcakes are a nice alternative to sweet cakes. They’re simple, healthy, and perfect for dogs who prefer something more meaty on their special day.
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup cooked, shredded chicken breast (no seasoning or skin)
- 1/4 cup shredded carrots
- 1 large egg
- 1/4 cup flour
- 2 tablespoons low-sodium chicken broth (or water)
