Customer Opinions On Healthy Paws

Positive Reviews

We have had policies for both of our dogs for a few years with HealthyPaws and they have never failed us. We just filed multiple claims for our 9-year-old rescue mix that totaled over $2,100 and they paid them quickly and without any fuss. I recommend this company to anyone with a beloved fur-baby. It is better to have pet insurance from a reliable company and not need it than chance it when the time comes that you do need it. We will remain loyal customers because HealthyPaws stayed true to their word when we needed the policy most. – Monica B., BBB 4/17/2018

This was my first experience with pet insurance, and after meticulous research I chose Healthy Paws. And I’m so glad I did!! My very special cat needed surgery for the second time in a month. (I’m still mad at him.) I enrolled him in pet insurance right after his first surgery, and I’m so glad I did. 2 weeks after his waiting period ended, he needed surgery again. I maxed out my care credit with this second surgery but then needed it for my own dental care. So I called to request my claim be expedited. Ryan answered the phone and he was so warm and friendly. He even asked how my cat was doing! Then he asked me to submit some documents and told me he would follow up immediately. And he did!! I uploaded the documents and got a call shortly after saying he’s processed the claim and I should get a confirmation of benefits on that same day, if not the next morning!! I was SO impressed!! All this happened within a short span of an hour! My other 2 cats are also on healthy paws and I know they’re well protected with this amazing company!! Thank you Ryan for your prompt service and your caring attitude! – Lydia P., Yelp 3/18/2018

Negative Reviews

BEWARE outrageous policy increases every year. Typical insurance company will lure you in with an affordable option that will quickly turn into an outrageous expense. You are better off banking the money into a savings account that relying on them. The language from their website reads “your rates will increase slightly each year. These manageable annual increases” – If you consider 15% per year “slight” or “manageable” then maybe it’s for you, but when you’re paying $100 month, and will still be out of pocket a considerable amount for anything major, you really should ask yourself if it’s worth it. – Todd M., BBB 4/24/2018

Horrible customer service and in general horrible policies. It is absolutely worth the extra $10 a month to go with any other insurance agency other than this one. We were a member for about 2 months when we submitted our first claim. Our puppy had been peeing in our office and we wanted to bring her in to make sure it wasn’t a medical related issue before signing her up for training lessons. My mother called and made the appointment and they did a urinary test which ran us around $300.  After 12 days of waiting for our claim to be processed, I emailed Healthypaws about when our claim would be reviewed.  No response. About 4 days later I emailed again about our claim.  Again no response.  Then I finally called after roughly 18 days had passed and they began to process our claim that day.  3 hours after I called in to request they review our claim, I get an email saying our claim was denied. When I asked why, they said there was a note on my dogs health records stating that we were bringing her in to check for recurring UTI’s and since she had had two over the last year they were considering it a pre existing condition and would not pay. When I spoke with my vet they let me know that the note on our medical records were actually just notes the receptionist jotted down from a conversation she had had with my mother about the vet visit.  I told healthypaws that these were just notes and not a diagnosis and was not the real reason we brought our dog to the vet. Healthypaws then told me verbatim “The official diagnosis does not affect coverage for a claim. Your own testimony regarding your pet’s health is taken into account when determining the start of signs and symptoms, since you know your pet best.” Apparently I have no need for a vet anymore since my mothers diagnosis means more than a vets.  Good to know! In conclusion, if you want a company that isn’t trying to gauge you of your money and takes weeks to tell you your claim is denied after taking 3 hours to review – find a different agency. – Leah M., Yelp 2/12/2018

We have Healthy Paws insurance for our dog — she developed an illness several months after we got her from a rescue organizations and Healthy Paws has been great in assisting us with our medical claims — great customer service. Would highly recommend this to any dog owner.

I highly suggest healthypaws to all pet owners I meet. I have had a couple health issues with my frenchie and they have been there along the way. I have had zero issues with Healthypaws which has allowed me to focus on ensuring my boy Claude gets the best care possible. He had to have multiple lumbar surgery this year and spent five days in the hospital. Healthypaws was huge help along the way knowing I would be covered.

Healthy Paws has been great. My dog has some medical issues and they are always there to help out with the costs. Most recently he had to have surgery and Healthy Paws actually checked in to see how he was doing. They really care. I cannot thank them enough.

I love this pet insurance. I had insurance for all my pets for many years with other provider whom I was happy until they got sold to another company who forced all customers to change policies, I did not want to and by the time of my renewal they use any excuse possible to get me out; unfortunately one of my dogs got sick and sadly died after surgery and I got not insurance. They tried to get me back which of course I refused. Then I found Healthypaws and couldn’t be happier. Best possible options for my pets needs, fair priced, fair deductibles, excellent customer service and wonderful claim processing system. AND, they donate to shelters in need.

We’ve had insurance with Healthy Paws on our French Bulldog Genji ever since we first got him. Earlier this year, our vet said he needed to get airway surgery on his nose, soft palate, and larynx so he could breathe better. I did my research and was worried that he might not be covered because bulldogs can often develop breathing problems later in life, but Healthy Paws gave me absolutely NO hassle with the claim and was true to their word. I didn’t even have to fill out a form or anything. I had the surgery center send them the records by email after the procedure, and they reimbursed it at our coverage rate, no questions asked. We recently got a second Frenchie, Gus, and are so happy with Happy Paws that we’ll be getting insurance for him too.

We have had nothing but very positive experiences with Healthy Paws. Unfortunately, our dog is plagued with severe allergy problems and has required frequent and costly treatment over the past 3 years. Healthy Paws has approved every claim we’ve submitted for medications and surgeries related to her allergy problems. We did quite a bit of research before selecting an insurance provider and we are so glad we chose Healthy Paws. We have heard horror stories from friends who have insured their pets with other agencies about the difficulties they have had getting claims approved, this has never been the case for us with Healthy Paws. If you’re looking to insure your pet, you won’t find better care and coverage than that provided by Healthy Paws.
Corey
My 5 year old Beagle Mix was diagnosed with severe cataracts and virtually blind in both eyes. He looked like he would be a white walker dog on Game of Thrones, with his extremely white and cloudy ‘Ghost’ eyes. The surgery cost came in at almost $6,000. I thank God for Healthy Paws who approved the claim less than 24 hours after being submitted. They have saved me a lot of stress & financial hardship around the Holidays, which I am forever grateful for. I highly recommend this insurance provider to all pet owners because you never know the expenses that could pop-up at any given time. THANK YOU HEALTHY PAWS!!!
Rori Zura
Healthy Paws has always been so responsive when it comes to both inquiries regarding coverage and getting my claims paid in a timely manner. I’m so impressed with the customer service of this company let alone the amount of issues they cover for both of my pets!

I have Healthy Paws Pet Insurance from 2016. Athena was adopted from North Shore Animal League and after researching and speaking with others I joined Healthy Paws not knowing how good their service would be. I never used the insurance until 2018 and wanted to cancel a few times because the cost increased from 33 to 38 to 46 dollars. in 2018 Athena had minor issues with her ear and with my 90% plan and 100 dollar yearly deductible most of her cost was covered. I still felt like it was unnecessary cost to pay for insurance since the reimbursement was minor and I had paid way more in the last 3 years than received.

2019: Early in the year it seemed Athena hurt her leg and was limping and not her playful self. Took her to our regular vet and had blood work and X-rays and was told she had “minor arthritis, nothing major give her rest and after a few weeks she will be okay.” We gave her all the prescribed meds and over the counter joint supplements and a pretty steep bill. Healthy Paws covered it.

Later 2019: Her symptoms worsened, took her to another vet they said she has a torn ACL, not arthritis, looking at the same X-ray from previous vet. They did blood work and wanted to do surgery to fix the issue. The bill was around 500 dollars of which Healthy Paws covered 90%.

Now I was skeptical about the torn ACL so I went to another specialized veterinarian service to get another opinion. They also said it was a torn ACL. The cost for this surgery was close to 6000 dollars. Well I had to do the surgery since I am responsible for my pets health. I was not sure if Healthy Paws would cover this astronomical bill. Guess what, within 10 days of submitting the bill they sent me a check for 90%. I am very grateful I kept their insurance because I would be in a lot of debt if I had cancelled.

I am reading a lot of comments about their response time and not having a person reach out. I have sent over 12 bills to Healthy Paws in the last 2 years and they have always processed the claim within 2 -3 days (except for the latest 6000 dollar bill which they sent an email to explain the delay while they went through the bill). I receive emails when I submit the claim to say they received it, I receive an email when they start the process and another email after the claim is completed. I have called Healthy Paws a few times and always get a friendly person on the other end to explain what I need explained. That is my experience with Healthy Paws and wanted to share with everyone. I know everyone has good and bad experiences with the same company but mine has luckily been a great experience and I would HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend anyone looking for pet insurance to get Healthy Paws.

It is very easy to sign up and complete all the necessary paperwork on line which is very important to me. They process claims within the states time period and make it easy for auto deposit into your bank account. They have covered all our medical care as stated in the plan, even congenital conditions. They even reached out to see how our pup was doing after his care. We are so happy to have this insurance to allow us to provide the needed medical care for our puppy. I would suggest you sign up before your dog ages to prevent preexisting conditions from not being covered. So far we are very happy with health paws and would recommend them to all dog owners!!
Tara Richards
I got insurance for my pup as soon as she was old enough. I had never gotten pet insurance before but thought it wise with a new puppy in the house! Boy was I glad! And I’m EXTRA glad it was Healthy Paws. They have a great app that I can use where ever I am so that I can get my claims in quickly and not have to worry about them. The turn around time is great for reimbursement and customer service has always been great the very few times I’ve reached out. Lola is now 4 years old and we’ve been through a LOT. I’m grateful for the caring people at Healthy Paws who even checked in on her when she had TPLO. Not your average pet insurance, I’m certain of it! Reasonable monthly rates that are right for any animal and budget. I highly recommend Healthy Paws!
Janice
Our dog, Jackson, recently required an emergency, life-saving surgery that we would not have been able to afford without insurance. Thankfully, our beloved pet was covered under Healthy Paws. When we called Healthy Paws to check on our coverage, the customer service representative was informative, knowledgeable, and compassionate. He knew all of the answers to our questions, and immediately gave us the confidence that Jackson would be completely covered under our policy. Additionally, Healthy Paws paid the bills directly to the veterinary hospital, and we ere only required to pay the co-pay. What a relief! Thank you, Healthy Paws, for the great product, customer service, and follow-up communication.
Sean
Spent a while looking for pet insurance companies and heard a lot a good reviews about Healthy Paws. I was a little skeptical at first but after experiencing first hand the ease of filing claims with them for our puppy they definitely have lived up to the hype. Look no further, they honestly have the simplest and most straight-forward policy there is, and their pricing is very competitive as well. Our claims are processed in a timely fashion, and it’s easy to submit them online. The only thing is their mobile app could use a bit of work, but overall still a five star company by far.
David
We have used Healthy Paws for close to 4 years now since we have gotten our pup. Throughout the years we have had zero issues with claims and were always reimbursed in a timely manner. They were extremely helpful with processing a claim when our dog had a costly accident and we received our payment within 10 days of submission. They even contacted us two weeks later to make sure that our pup was doing well after his surgery. Highly recommend, will always use them in the future.
Monica Figueiredo
Healthy Paws reimbursed us for our three-year-old dog’s surgery (CCL) in less than two weeks, their stated turnaround time. Their web interface is very easy to use – I uploaded three files within one minute. After a few email updates on the claim status, and a follow up to see how my dog was doing, I received my check in the mail – no hassle. While our vet visits and consults leading up to major surgery were not covered, we were reimbursed 80% of the $5,000 tab, which is what the policy stated. This has kept our premiums affordable while covering us for this major incident. I appreciated the hassle-free and quick turn around so that I could focus on my pet and her rehabilitation – and not deal with bureaucracy and red tape – like I do with my human health insurance.
Monica
I am so thankful that I have my dogs insured through Healthy Paws Pet Insurance! Customizing your monthly payment and deductible is very simple. They make filing claims easy and painless, and they process the claims super quickly! After meeting your deductible, your reimbursement is in your account within days and they send a detailed review of what services are being covered. One of my dogs recently had surgery and they made the whole process way less stressful because I knew they were going to help cover a large majority of the cost!I would highly recommend them to anyone who has a pet!
Mircea
Healthy Paws was suggested at my work initially. We were not familiar with pet insurance never searched for one. We signed up and started using it. In the second year our dog needed major leg surgery that cost over $ 4.000. Having insurance made it so much easier, we were able to concentrate on the well being of our dog without stressing about the cost. They even covered hydrotherapy after surgery. There were years when we paid more in insurance premiums then what we used but there were also years where they paid us way more then we paid. A monthly premium gives us the peace of mind that we do not compromise about our dog’s healthcare because of the cost. Healthy paws customer service is 5 star, they even checked with us how our dog was doing after surgery. Payments are quick and always hassle free. We did not try another insurance because we have a good experience with our current one.
Amanda
My experience with Healthy Paws was TERRIBLE. For paying $38/month you would expect more.

My dog had a full physical examination WITH blood work done months before signing up. His medical record clearly states that he is healthy and has no pre-existing conditions.

When something did go wrong and he had to be kept overnight, we incurred over $2000. I uploaded all the paperwork, the claim, every single record we had on him and the claim was in process for months.

I didn’t even know our claim was denied because they failed to update our portal. I had to call and wait on the line for 15 minutes to talk to a “representative” who is clearly some outsourced person.

They denied our claim and kept saying we were missing paperwork even though we uploaded multiple times via the portal.

Customer service: slow
Website UX: poor
Coverage: Questionable.

Tim
Amanda,

We apologize that our current customer service has not met yours or our expectations. We recognize that our hold times have been longer than expected recently. We have multiple call centers with the largest call centers based in the US and the smallest center in the Philippines. Our colleagues in the Philippines act as receptionists or operators, directing any concerns to our highly trained specialists if they cannot resolve them immediately.

Unfortunately, we cannot find your account in our system with the information in your review. Since we cannot find your account with the information provided, we don’t want to speculate on what medical records are still needed to process your claim. If you’re willing, please send the Administrator of Canine Journal an email with your full name and policy number, along with permission to share that information with us. We can then have one of our Customer Liaison Managers look into the issue with your claim and work on a getting it completed if that hasn’t happened already.

I have been a Healthy Paws member since February 2017 and I can safely say that signing up for their pet insurance program is one of the best decisions I have made in regards to caring for my dog. I have had to file claims on 3 separate occassions and in each instance the process was simple, quick and stress-free, allowing me to focus on the health of my dog. I was able to easily upload images of the invoices to the app and was promptly reimbursed 3 business days later. The annual deductible as opposed to a per incident deductible along with a 15 day waiting period for hip and knee claims differntiated Healthy Paws from their competition. These factors made selecting Healthy Paws as my insurance company of choice a no-brainer.

I have had Healy Paws Pet Insurance since the day we got our lab. She has chronic skin issues and she recently had an emergency illness. Healthy paws has always covered everything and reimbursement has always been quick. They even recently personally emailed me to check to see how Remi was doing after her emergency visit!! I work at an animal clinic, I see and deal with all the pet insurance companies. By far, Healthy Paws is the easiest and best. Highly recommend!
Tootie
I have had pet health insurance ever since one of my dogs became very ill with cancer and over the course of one month, had incurred nearly $18,000 in medical bills. I shopped around several companies for policies and talked to a number of people about their experience with other companies before choosing Healthy Paws. Even now, 8 years after first getting coverage, they are still an outstanding company. I could not be happier with the coverage, the price or the service. I think every claim I’ve submitted has been paid within 2 weeks. That make a big difference in my peace of mind when the bills start to stack up for medical care. I’ll be a customer for as long as I have dogs and they’re around to provide coverage. I wish human health insurance companies were as customer-focused, transparent, fast and friendly as Healthy Paws!!
Cindy
I am so thankful for Healthy Paws insurance! I got Willow started on the insurance when she was a puppy because I was fearful of her getting cancer. Little did I know she would be diagnosed with hip dysplasia at 4 years old and need a total hip replacement. Healthy Paws has been fairly quick getting the claims processed and I am already awaiting reimbursement for her surgery, which was 4 weeks ago. They even emailed to check on her progress! I have referred many people to them and will continue to do so.
Shannon
My little Scout developed bladder stones which needed to be removed surgically. Surgery went smoothly and I took a picture of the bill and texted it to Healthy Paws. I was surprised and pleased at at how quickly I received my reimbursement. Thanks, Healthy Paws!
Mary
We recently submitted a bulk of claims for our pets. My procrastination for submitting them was mostly because the last time I submitted claims it seemed a bit cumbersome. But, I sat down this past weekend and went to the Healthy Paws web portal where I noticed the process appeared very streamlined. I scanned in all of our receipts and sent them off as claims. I was fully prepared to be contacted for more information and/or to process each claim individually rather than in bulk. You can’t imagine my surprise, relief, and gratitude when I started getting emails that claims representatives had taken each request and created individual claims for me! Not only that, but they were being processed and completed within days of their submission! Everyone seems spread thin these days just trying to get thru each day between work, home and taking care of these wonderful pets that share our lives, so all of this work by the claims department was such a blessing. I nearly cried when emails came back so quickly and each had been processed and reimbursement checks were being issued. Now that we know how easy and streamlined the web portal is, we will be able to scan and file our claims as incidents arise instead of letting them build up for a single submission. Healthy Paws has truly shown it is committed to helping us provide the best healthcare for our pups.
Frank
I first purchased the policy for our Cocker Spaniel last Sept when he was 4 months old. With $250 deductible and 90% coverage, the premium was $41.74 per month. Now one year later they premium was raised to $51.76 per month. That is a 24% increase!!
To make matter worse, the same coverage for the same age and breed of dog would currently cost a NEW subscriber only $39.66 per month.
When I questioned this, they just gave me double talk saying if I cancelled and re-enrolled I would have to worry about pre existing conditions…
It is clear this company takes advantage of current clients.
DO NOT DEAL WITH HEALTHY PAWS, by the time your pet may actually need it, the premiums will have become unaffordable.
Tim
Frank,

We understand that no one likes any form of premium increase. We know you haven’t had to file a claim and we hope that you never have to–this means your pet is healthy and accident free. Our management team works hard to keep our premiums as low as possible while still providing comprehensive coverage. New technology, advancements in veterinary treatments, and overall claim costs are taken into consideration when assessing our rates. Your monthly premium is going up because the increase in claim payments has been faster than the premium increases in your state. As a result, we need to increase the premium level for all pets in your state so you and your pet can have continued access to the best veterinary care. The pricing for your current policy is per the rating plan approved by your state’s Insurance Department and we are not permitted to deviate from those rates for existing policyholders. The quote you generated recently is the approved pet insurance product filing for NEW accounts only. Because of Insurance Department regulations, the information our team provided regarding the need to cancel/re-enroll to acquire the lower premium is correct. All pet insurance companies, no matter how they market their benefits, will raise rates to keep up with the rapidly rising cost of veterinary care. We do our best to be transparent regarding annual premium increases by including this information on the “Frequently Asked Questions” page of our website. We’re sorry to lose you as a policyholder and hope you and your pet stay well.

I totally agree, Frank! They are charging me $600 per year for a five year old dog. It just doesn’t make any sense financially to have this insurance. When she was 1 it was $35/month which still was not cheap but I figured that was an okay gamble. But clearly they just raise and raise hoping their clientele is too busy to shop around for better pricing.

I was DEEPLY happy as a healthy paws policy holder for over 2 years with multiple incredible experiences for our dog, who we enrolled at 10 weeks old…UNTIL this monthly when my monthly premium increased 43% from $79 to $140 a month. I recovered ONE email about this that was titled “updates to your policy” and visually read like a spam message. When I called to inquire about what was going on I was told it was because the premiums for California and NY are increasing significantly. I’m incredibly disappointed that healthy paws — who I highly recommended to any and all friends in the last two years — would find a FORTY-THREE percent premium increase to be acceptable and not lose customers. I’m sad to say I’m immediately shopping for new coverage IMMEDIATELY.

Love it! The app makes it soo easy for file claims! My dog needs an expensive rx for life now so I pay about $40/mo and they send me a check for $100 each month when I submit the rcpt.

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance was the best and smartest decision we made upon adopting our little Missy. At first we thought it was like car insurance. Really, how often would it be needed? What a foolish evaluation that was. We have in fact used it more then I would have ever imagined and thank goodness it was with a company that responds quickly, provides very quick turn around reimbursements and has follow up personal emails to see how the puppy is doing. Insuring with Healthy Paws is a Great Choice.
Abby's Mom
I chose healthy Paws based on my research of the best Pet insurance. They came up and I signed up on our way to get our sweet Abby. Unfortunately we have had some issues with our sweet girl since 6 months old. Healthy Paws has been prompt with responses and very communicative with us. I filed a claim last Thursday it was approved on Monday and check was in the mail to me by Thursday. They even sent a follow up email checking in our sweet girl. I will recommend them always. Such a great company!
Rachel - Valkyrie’s mon
Just in case there’s still anyone out there who doesn’t have pet insurance, is on the fence about it, or maybe doesn’t even know about it, hopefully this helps. I have a 2 year old German Shepherd. She is from a top shelf breeder, she’s from a champion line and both of her parents and grandparents tested excellent for hips and elbows. There’s no history of cancer, illness, joint issues, allergies, and they all tested negative for Degenerative Myelopathy and so did she. She was perfect. At the start of last month she came down with a fatally high fever, she wouldn’t eat, had diarrhea and antibiotics weren’t working. Over the last 4 weeks she’s been hospitalized at the emergency vet hospital 3 times and they ran every test imaginable and it took over a month of diagnostics, overnight fluid treatments, xrays, joint taps, ultrasounds, cultures and more before they came to a diagnosis of immune mediated disease. She has an autoimmune disease that there’s no cause or reason for and it’s no ones fault. It could not have been prevented or anticipated.

The total I’ve paid since September 5th 2019 is $10,480.19…. and we’re not done, it’s going to continue since we have follow ups and reoccurring medication she’ll be on for a significant amount of time.

I enrolled Valkyrie in a policy with Healthy Paws when she was only 11 weeks old, before I even brought her home. I have a $500 annual deductible and the policy is a 90% reimbursement rate. So out of that nearly $10,500, the green out of my jeans is just under $1700. YES, that is still a lot of money… but it’s a heck of a lot better than 10,500+ and having an insurance policy with Healthy Paws made it possible for me to save my girl. She’s my entire world. I don’t know what I would have done if I didn’t have pet insurance.

I haven’t had a single issue. I didn’t have to fight with anyone on the phone. They didn’t once attempt to challenge or deny coverage from any of these claims. Not one single charge did they cause an issue over. They legitimately covered everything they always said they’d cover with no stress or fuss whatsoever.

Can you name one HUMAN health Insurance company that you can say that about? I can’t.

Also… the process couldn’t have been easier. They have a Healthy Paws app that you download onto your phone and when I submit a claim, literally all I had to do was take a photo of the invoice and hit the send button. Within 3 days I had an email informing me they received it and it was being reviewed. A couple days after that I got another email letting me know it was completed and a check had been sent out and on its way to me.

I can confidently say, without a doubt, that if I didn’t have her insured I don’t know what I would have done. I have been told by multiple people that most people would have put the dog down. I don’t know a whole lot of people who have $11,000+ disposable cash laying around or have the ability to just rack up credit card debt or owe money to the hospital for years. It’s not a waste of money. It’s not a rip off. I pay under $50 a month and it’s been worth every penny.

Even if your dog is healthy. Whether it’s from a rescue or from a good breeder. Even if it’s a low risk breed. Stuff happens. Even IF nothing happens for the majority of its life, eventually when your pet gets old… When your pet starts losing their teeth, getting infections, arthritis, all of that end of life shit, it’s going to need care, it’s going to need medication, this insurance covers all of that too.

I hope that this helps someone make the choice to do this so that you don’t have to let go of your babies due to money.
It would be a tragic SHAME.

This is a wonderful company. I have had horse insurance and dog insurance and this company by far surpasses price and the fact that part of what I pay goes to help homeless dogs really makes me feel good about paying my monthly fee as well. I was moved to post when I had a couple services combined and instead of reaching out to me or finding the one lab that was approved they just paid both because they wanted to take care of my dog! They help me save hundreds a year as I do a lot of preventative testing and help keep my baby healthy! Wonderful company!

My wife and I are so extremely thankful to all of you at healthy paws. It means such a great deal to us that for the most part, we will never have to make the hard decision of choosing between trying to avoid difficult financial hardship and our dog Monkey’s well being. This especially rings true to us because a friend of ours had to deal with those circumstances recently and unfortunately, to poor results.

Even though the complexities of health insurance may escape Monkey, it certainly does not escape my wife and I. Monkey is well loved and cared for and that is due in part to all of you at healthy paws.

I have not had an issue with this insurance company. Our dog needed to use the policy within a month of getting it and they were very prompt. When there was a wait period as they were handling a lot of claims they kept us informed. Super helpful. Even sent a follow up email to check on her. Our dog has better insurance than we do
Mary Beth Labuda
I requested to cancel my policy after my beloved dog Sasha passed away. I never received any confirmation that this was completed. I kept being charged for 3 additional months of coverage. Once I cancelled my credit card, they finally engaged with trying to ‘keep me’ as a customer. I have reached out no fewer than 5 times via their website and cannot get out of their automated system. It is painful enough to lose a pet. This company compounded my pain by continuing to send me reasons I needed to keep her coverage. They won’t respond to refund the months covered after she died. I can’t get them on the phone or get them to respond to my messages. PS- they never covered a penny of her care despite having a clean bill of health for 4+ years under their plan.
Tim
Mary Beth,

We’re so sorry for the loss of your beloved pet. We know how hard it can be and you are in our thoughts. We apologize that our customer service was nowhere near up to par during this difficult time. We truly value your feedback regarding this issue and will actively communicate with all teams and trainers so this is not experienced by another client.

Prior to 9/9, we did not receive any communication in regards to the passing of your pet. When you canceled your credit card, that triggered those emails letting a client know their payment did not go through. Again, we apologize for the delay, but your account was canceled and you were provided with a pro-rated reimbursement of your premiums.

I would like to voice my opinion here on Healthy Paws. I must tell you I’ve never met an insurance company for puppies that are as nice as this group. When I first started with healthy paws, I wasn’t that experience with health insurance. I sent them three claims at one time and they walked me through all the claims procedures and help me understand what I was doing.

My Westie recently had to have knee surgery. Owning animals, is very expensive and I always worry about the cost. I want my babies to be healthy and happy, that is so important. But when Gracie had to have surgery Healthy Paws helped me through the expenses, I would not have been able to do it on my own. I am a senior and retired and live as all seniors do, at least most of them, from paycheck to paycheck. You want a great company to work with these people are it!

Elizabeth
Worst customer service experience I have ever had. They do not return calls or emails. It’s been a month and they still have not processed my claim. They won’t even give me an idea of when it might be processed. They flat out ignore their customers and do not care about your business. Highly recommend you find another insurance company to do business with! It’s a complete joke that they process claims quickly. It’s been a month and no one can even tell me what’s going on with my claim! I’ve been told numerous times that the claims processor has been tasked with expediting the claim or at least giving me a call, but I haven’t heard from anyone. I’ve since canceled my policy, but it’s still active for another month. I will continue to call every single day and leave reviews on every site I can find until someone at this joke of a company actually takes some accountability and helps me out. I plan to write to the CEO, sharing every contact I’ve made and how it just gets ignored.
Tim
Elizabeth,

We apologize that our current customer service has not yours or our expectations. We have been helping an unusually large number of sick pets at this time and that has increased our email response and claims processing time. We have been proactively adding more customer care staff so that all policyholders can get the their claims and customer care issues resolved as quickly as possible.

As of 9/7, your claim has been processed. You should be receiving an Explanation of Benefits for the appealed claim within next 24-48 hours. We’re sorry to lose you as a client and hope you and your pet stay well.

The worst customer service ever!!! I have been trying to submit a claim since almost two months ago. Actually I submitted in the app three times, they say it is processing but after few days they delete the claim, with absolutely no explanation for that. I also called them many times, then they put me on hold forever. So, I am paying for nothing. I will try PetPlan or Figo, they seem to be much better.
Tim
Fabio,

We’re sorry that your pet wasn’t feeling well. We apologize that our current customer service has not met yours or our expectations. We recognize that our hold times have been longer than expected recently and appreciate your patience. We have also been helping an unusually large number of sick pets at this time and that has increased our claims processing time. We have been proactively adding more customer care staff so that all policyholders can get the their claims and customer care issues resolved as quickly as possible.

We appreciate your efforts in providing your pet’s medical records. We did receive an estimate for the services, but not an actual invoice. Our team reached out on your behalf to your veterinarian for that invoice. It has been received and your claim has been processed . You should see an Explanation of Benefits from us in the next 24-48 hours. Give your buddy a big hug from us.

I have had awful experiences with three other pet insurance companies and had almost given up on the entire industry; but when we adopted my pup two years ago, I decided to give Healthy Paws a try. Two years later, Wally started limping, and now three months later, he’s had major knee surgery followed by eight weeks of twice weekly hydrotherapy. I submitted the receipts expecting to get the run around. Instead…two weeks later a check showed up in my mailbox! Healthy Paws’ easy process and expedience made a stressful experience so much easier, and cheaper too.

Healthy paws is a great pet insurance company. The have been great with reimbursement. I would recommend this company to everyone.

Healthy Paws is an integral part of my dog’s life. It is an amazing organization that truly cares about pets and their pet parents. As my dog gets older, it is reassuring to know that Healthy Paws will be with us every step of the way. Healthy Paws is one of the best organizations I have worked with – whether for people or for animals! Everyone at Healthy Paws is attentive, compassionate, responsive. I wish there were more organization out there like Healthy Paws who genuinely put the welfare of pets first.

I am SO grateful to Healthy Paws and so happy that I selected them for my dogs’ insurance. My beloved mastiff was hospitalized, critically ill in ICU for a week, with aspiration pneumonia and post surgery for a GI perforation. I was not ready to lose my boy, but I was terrified about what this was going to cost. He had suffered a similar condition in the past, and I was not sure if this was going to be considered a pre existing condition, and thus not covered. Not only was the $30,000 plus hospitalization and follow up care covered, but they were actually able and willing to tell me two days in that it would be covered! That was SUCH a relief as the charges were adding up quickly each day.

It takes me less than a minute to file a claim, and all of my claims have been processed and paid quickly, for all of my dogs. I highly recommend Healthy Paws!

This pet insurance is not worth it. Due to not covering the exam for who knows what reason, the way the claims dept drags their feet in resolving the claim, and the ever-present need for more documentation, I’ve decided it’s in my best financial interest to save about 50 bucks a month in a special account for our dog.
When our puppy jumped out my arms and hit the floor with her jaw, it resulted in a severe concussion. We wound up taking her to the emergency room where they were able to stabilize her and recommended we take her to a hospital to get monitored for 8 hours, which we did. All turned out well, and the final cost was at about $600. When we submitted our claims, I got two emails stating that they were working on it. Then after that I got notice that they closed the claim for lack of supporting paperwork. WHAT? So I talked to customer (service?) and they told me to submit all the vet records from before the incident. I did, they got it, and then nothing happened. So I called again and had them file 2 new claims. OK whatever. After ten days (or maybe 11) I got an email stating they were waiting for more paperwork (the original paperwork got lost?). SO I called again and they managed to get all the paperwork. After it was all said and done, I got reimbursed just over $55. My wife said, “Is that all?” Yep. And it only took about 3 months and numerous phone calls to get that much.
My advice: save your money and don’t put it in their pockets.
Tim
We do our best to be transparent on how our reimbursement calculation works. We include this information (including examples) on our website within our “Frequent Asked Questions” page, and on our “For Customers” page within our website. Our process for calculating reimbursements are approved by each state’s Department of Insurance and are based upon the deductible/reimbursement level a client chooses at enrollment. As with any policy with a deductible, the deductible has to be met before any claim reimbursement.
Kayla
My fur family has had Healthy Paws Insurance for several years and I have been very pleased with the service. When I have had questions, I always get a prompt and courteous response either by phone or email. My Anatolian Shepherd got osteomyelitis and received an MRI and two CT scans and was on antibiotics for 6 months. Her care came to thousands of dollars. I was very grateful to have Healthy Paws Insurance for her!
I highly recommend this insurance company.

I am thankful each and every time something comes up with our two dogs that I’m not put into a position where we have to make some horribly tough decision, like so many people … Do I move forward with this expensive procedure and have to sell my car? Not eat for a few months? Fall into an insurmountable load of credit card debt? Or worse, for some people, because they cannot afford it, they end up having to put off a needed procedure while their pet suffers each day, because surgery is just not a financial option for them. What a horrible conversation people have to have.

Healthy Paws covered TWO TPLO surgeries for one of my dogs – at 90%. In addition, they covered holistic underwater physical therapy for months at 90% each visit. My dog, years later, grew an abscess in one leg, and had to have ALL the metal in both legs removed. Healthy Paws covered this procedure at 90% as well. We would do anything for our dog, which means, we would have done the surgeries without insurance. But we would be in at LEAST about $20,000 worth of credit card debt right now, just for the TPLO issues alone, without our Healthy Paws coverage.

Every time I call, their customer service representatives are kind and compassionate. They have recently raised our rates. However, I know people with other pet insurance who also had their rates increased. (I think inflation is just making everything more expensive across the board.)

Healthy Paws does NOT cover:
~ Vaccines
~ Office visit charges
~ PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS

I am truly thankful we made the decision to go with Healthy Paws.

Healthy Paws is the best. I have been with them for a few years ever since I rescued my dog. They made it possible for me to give my dog the treatment she needed with no hesitation. My most recent experience was my dog was sick and I had to rush her into the vet. She ended up staying for five days and having surgery. The visit all together cost 3300.00. I only had to pay 240.00 of that. Without this insurance I would have not been able to treat her. They are so compassionate and care. It’s simple to submit the claim and they reimburse you in no time. I highly recommend Healthy Paws to all my friends that have pets. Thank you so much Healthy Paws for all you do
Angelica
We had this insurance for two years and never submitted a claim. My dog had an impact injury and her leg went lame. She had to have surgery. First Healthy Paws denied the claim saying it was preventative so I had the vet write a letter. Then I resubmitted and they said they couldn’t read the PDF invoice from the vet. Then I resubmitted and they said it was a pre-existing condition. Two years later??? My vet even confirmed that it wasn’t and they still denied the claim. They are supposed to process claims in 10 days. This was two months of them denying me and then me sending information to refute their reason and them finding a new reason to deny. Do not waste your money. They have loads of bad reviews they try to cover up. Do your research and don’t be fooled. Healthy Paws insurance is a fraud. What a nightmare! I paid thousands more to them than my claim would have been.
Tim
Angelica,

We are never happy when we have to deny a claim for a client and sorry that your dog had to have leg surgery. We appreciate you providing your pet’s medical records and resending when the copies we received were unreadable. Even with today’s technology, there are still issues with fax quality from time to time. We’ve also been helping an unusually large number of sick pets in the last few weeks which caused the delay in your claim processing. We apologize for that delay and have been proactively implementing solutions so this does not happen in the future.

All claim decisions are based off of your pet’s medical records and the signs/symptoms that are noted in those records. Most pet insurance companies including Healthy Paws use a pet’s medical records to determine if there are any pre-existing conditions which would keep us from approving a claim. The medical records provided to us show the sign/symptoms of the current issue falling under the only bi-lateral exclusion in our policy, that being Cruciate Ligament (CL, CCL or ACL) injuries. Since your pet was showing cruciate ligament problems during the policy waiting period, claims for either leg are excluded from coverage.

I regards to our reviews, our pet parents are passionate about their pets, just like you, which is why we have both positive and negative reviews. We don’t have the ability to manipulate or cover up any review posted by an individual. Our goal is to provide a response based upon the content of the review while adhering to our corporate privacy policy which protects our customer’s private information. We’re sorry to lose you as a client and hope your dog does well in their recovery.

The seemingly endless rate hikes and lack of transparency at Healthy Paws are very disappointing.

I have been a Healthy Paws client since 2014 and my rate has gone up every single year. My rate went up 15.5% from last year and has gone up a total of 57% since I first joined. I was notified through a February email from “Jennifer at Healthy Paws Customer Care” about the most recent increase that would occur in April. I reached out to the corporate office where Liz informed me that the increased rate was reflective of the increased veterinary cost and claims in my area. I stated that in my community of pet owners we had not seen anywhere close to a 15% increase in vet costs over the past year and would like to see some documentation to reflect their claim. Liz stated that would not be a problem and that I would receive documentation the following week. No one ever got back to me so I followed up through the inquiry form on the Healthy Paws website. My continued follow-ups have yielded emails from Beth at Healthy Paws Client Services apologizing for delays in providing my documentation request and stating that she will reach out to the team/manager handling the request. My rate has now officially gone up and still no documentation or other satisfactory response has been provided other than to reiterate that rate hikes are due to an increase in frequency of high-value claims.

My dog just had his annual at the vet where costs hadn’t increased at all from last year let alone by over 15%. Meanwhile my neighbor’s pet insurance rate from a different provider, which began at a similar cost to my own, has not gone up at all in the last 5 years, let alone by over 50%. The lack of transparency and seemingly endless rate hikes at Healthy Paws are very disappointing.

I gather from calling them that Healthy Paws is increasing its premiums for all customers in California and New Jersey – I too had a 50% increase notification when my policy anniversary just came due. It is SHOCKING. I cannot understand how veterinary costs can have gone up that much in one year – the policy says “Monthly premiums may change for all policyholders to reflect changes in the costs of veterinary medicine” – but it sounds like their change in underwriters was actually the driver here. I am appalled at this level of increase, and of course afraid that it may just keep happening. I haven’t had to file a claim with HP, but feel like I no longer can trust them and have to look around for other companies at this point – especially before my dog gets any older, which is the really scary part. The point of getting pet insurance was to start while he was young and rates were not so high – but if they can just go up 50% every year, then the economics just stop making sense. I agree with the above customer that this is really disappointing – and a little terrifying. Do better, Healthy Paws!

Thanks to Healthy Paws, we were able to get our dachshund admitted to the hospital for emergency treatment and ivdd surgery without a hassle. There is nothing more stressful or heartbreaking than to be given just two choices from a surgeon: life-saving surgery (if you can afford it) or euthanasia (if you don’t have $$$ or insurance). Having much-needed pet insurance allowed us to focus on caring for our dog and to get him the best medical care possible.

Healthy Paws is one of the best pet insurance companies I’ve dealt with! I have had experience with two other companies and HP is by far the best! The claim submission is easy, the reimbursement rates are high (mine are 80%), the rates are reasonable and the customer service is superb. I highly recommend them.. for example, my German Shepherd within 10 days time had knee surgery and then ended up in the ER, costing me about $8400 in 10 days, I submitted the claims to HP and received $6400 in reimbursements! AND received those fund quickly! The knee surgery in 3 weeks and the ER in less than 2! This is huge when you have those type of vet bills – they even emailed me personally to check on the patient! Absolutely amazing company!

I’m a year late writing this review, but oh well. Last year, my then-4 yo chihuahua terrier completely tore his ACL and because of his breed and knee structure, the surgery was complicated and costly. My family did not have $5,000+ to pay for the surgery, and the vet doesn’t do payment plans. Luckily, Lucas (the dog) had been serviced by Healthy Paws for over a year and we felt comfortable with the claim process. Usually these insurances are reimbursement based, but because it was such a large amount, I talked to a HPPI representative and was able to get them to pay their part up front (90%!) and I ended up paying only $500 for my dog’s pre-surgery consult, surgery, and post-surgery check! And, because of their unlimited lifetime claims (unlike other providers) i have no worries that I am going to run out of insurance money as he ages (since he’s just a pup). Overall wonderful service.

I couldn’t be happier with HealthyPaws! I have all 3 of my pooches insured through them and they have been by my side through illnesses and ailments big and small including foreign body surgeries, toenail surgeries, knee surgeries, skin conditions, aches/pains, you name it!
Pet issues are stressful enough to deal with, nevermind the financial burden. HP allows you to focus less on the stress of vet bills and more on your pet’s diagnosis and recovery.
Submitting claims via the app is a cinch and I can always count on HP to process them quickly and accurately. The direct deposit to your bank account feature is an added bonus.
I recommend Healthy Paws anytime I can. They’re a must for any pet owner.

We weren’t sure pet insurance was a good idea, but we went ahead, “just in case”. Well, unfortunately our poor Border Collie mix Diggity developed a bad stomach bug, and we thought we were going to lose him! He was in and out of the vet, and the bills . . . well, you know. We didn’t have time to worry about the costs, we just wanted our boy healthy. Insurance? Well, we would see. To our delight, Healthy Paws had an easy-to-use web site, the vet knew all about them and said good things. Then, voila, a check appeared, and then another without any fuss! Then, another minor disaster, our doggie needed dental surgery after breaking off a cainine tooth. Another strasopheric bill, another insurance claim. Surly they would push back on such an quick second medical expense. But, again, to our delight, no fuss at all, just another paid claim. Thank you Healthy Paws, and Diggity says thanks too.
Kathy Houlihan
Healthy Paws paid for my fur baby’s torn CCL and allowed me the time to focus on her recovery instead of the cost of her surgery! I have been with them since 2012 and I have 4 dogs covered with them. I highly recommend them to any looking for pet insurance!

Our cat Mo has had two major health incidents and Healthy Paws has stood by him (and our family) 100%. The first was an accident where his tail needed to be amputated, and the second he became hyperthyroid and was going into cardiac failure and needed I-131 radioiodine treatment. I was telling a friend about the I-131 treatment and the cost, and she replied she would have had to put her cat down because she would have never been able to afford the treatment – Healthy Paws allowed us to focus on our cat and what he needed and not worry about finances. I find their customer service staff to be very helpful, and they always email to ask how my cat is doing after a procedure which is really appreciated. I have convinced several friends to get Health Paws and we all have nothing but gratitude!

Last year, our new German Shepherd Scout needed surgery to clear an obstruction (she managed to eat a couple rocks) as a young puppy which cost several thousand dollars out of pocket (and of course all the stress we went through before and during surgery).

I figured it was time to look into pet insurance after this, and settled on Healthy Paws after looking at other options due to reviews and what was covered. Over the year various check-ups and medications were submitted (most which counted towards the deductible, and where others were not covered there was a specific reason provided as to why).

Fast forward to about a year later, Scout suffered a very bad leg fracture and couldn’t use her front leg as a result, and required serious surgery. Our worrying about her pain and well-being was bad enough, but when we were hit with the estimated bill ($5,000-$7,000) for surgery it was another punch to the gut.

After surgery I submitted a claim to Healthy Paws, thinking in my head “I’m sure this will get rejected for some reason and I won’t see a dime” and hoping to get at least something to help cover the cost of the operation and subsequent recovery costs.

To my surprise, the FULL amount of my plan (80% of the surgery after deductible, over $4,500) was covered and promptly sent as a check. No arguing on the phone, no other action needed by me after sending the claim in…it was hassle-free and let me concentrate on our dog getting better (let alone helping us sleep at night due to the costs).

Representatives also checked in with us to see how Scout was doing shortly after the surgery (yes, real people and not automated emails) and wishing us the best for recovery. This was very appreciated and made us feel much less of a ‘number in the system’ with an actual connection to the people handling our claims.

I can’t say enough what a huge relief this was financially and mentally. I hope to never be in this situation again but am so glad that we had the foresight to purchase pet insurance for Scout for just this kind of “what if” scenario.

Previously I always thought pet insurance was some kind of scam, and maybe some people aren’t as fortunate to have their fur-babies’ conditions and problems covered, but I am so happy to have gotten coverage for Scout when I did.

My Pug Mattie was diagnosed with a gall bladder issue, and without Healthy Paws, I couldn’t afford the treatments. Healthy Paws was easy to put in a claim, and quick to settlement the claim. I couldn’t have asked for more, except that they inquired later how Mattie was doing. No other insurance company would do that!

Our dog had a fox tail embedded in his foot and needed to be sedated to have it removed. I was only expecting it to go toward the deductible but even that was a fight. I was very discouraged with healthy paws and how they seem to fight everything. It is not at all work the money.
Tim
Wendy,

We’re sorry your dog had that run in with a Foxtail – those are no fun. All claim decisions are based off of your pet’s medical records and the signs/symptoms that are noted in those records. Most pet insurance companies including Healthy Paws use a pet’s medical records to determine if there are any pre-existing conditions which would keep us from approving a claim. Since we knew the Foxtail incident was an accident and not a preexisting condition, we were able to cover that claim based on the reimbursement level and deductible you chose at enrollment. Since your other claims are older and not related to the Foxtail incident, we need those medical records to make our determination. We hope your baby makes a complete recovery.

Our Merlin had to have emergency surgery for some ruptured discs. I called Healthy Paws on the way to the vet hospital, and asked if they would talk directly with the billing office, and they were happy to do that. Even after the surgery and during recovery process, I got an email from them asking about how Merlin was doing. Even my personal health insurance people don’t do that! Very pleased with Health Paws and recommend them on regular basis.

There have been no surprises with Healthy Paws. They keep you in the loop on the status of your claim, every step of the way. You’re able to submit & forget – focus on your pet’s health and then a check arrives in the mail! I am SO glad I signed our Bella up for Healthy Paws and I would do it over and over again in the future! Thank you Healthy Paws!!

One year ago, our 3-year old Pitbull was diagnosed with T-Cell Lymphoma. We were devistated. Our sweet boy, Chappie, has gone through many sessions of extensive chemotherapy and is now in remission for the second time. Healthy Paws has made this treatment for our pet possible. They are absolutely amazing! They are the best choice for your pet insurance! They care about the health of our pet and show us by checking in and paying all claims prompty! We love and appreciate you Healthy Paws! Thank you for taking great care of our Chappie!

I have had nothing but great experiences with Healthy Paws and have recommended to all pet owners I encounter. They have always made me feel assured that my dogs have access to the best care possible. My newest member of the family has had major tummy issues and an upper respiratory infection and Healthy Paws has made the process so smooth. They even followed up to see how he was doing! Couldn’t ask for a better pet insurance for my fur babies 🙂

Our Golden Retriever, Molly, had an emergency vet visit on Saturday night just over 2 weeks ago. She was diagnosed with a ruptured tumor on her spleen that was bleeding into her abdomen. A splenectomy was required but the doctor cautioned us that 67% of these tumors are cancerous. We have had Molly for over 8 years and have always had insurance for her but never have had to use it. We decided to opt for the surgery and deal with the cancer if and when that was confirmed. It turns out that the tumor was benign and Molly is fine and acting as if nothing was wrong with her. Healthy Paws was easy to work with. Uploading Molly’s paperwork was easy and the people at Healthy Paws kept us informed of the progress and asked how Molly was progressing. We have already received the reimbursement check for 80% minus the annual deductible. If we had chosen direct deposit, it probably would have been in the bank several days earlier. Thank you Healthy Paws!! Our daughter just got a dog and I have recommended Healthy Paws to her and will continue to recommend it to any else.

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance review
I love Healthy Paws- my 6 year old lab had to have ear surgery at Texas A&M due to chronic ear infections and the cost was covered 100%- it truly can help pet owners take the financial aspect out of having to make difficult decisions regarding care for their pets.

Healthy Paws pet insurance has been top notch. My dog has always been healthy up until recently. It’s been one thing after another with numerous, costly different vet visits including specialists. He’s had X-Rays and blood work multiple times, an ultrasound, and eye surgery. It’s very stressful to go through this with my beloved animal but Healthy Paws took that financial worry away. It is extremely easy to submit a claim on the app. You simply take a picture. Your reimbursement can be set up to get directly deposited into your bank account. It takes hardly any time at all. They update you throughout the process and the best part is that the money has always been in my account by the time my credit card bill is due. They have truly been a life saver!

My 7 month old Goldendoodle, Quincee, wouldn’t eat breakfast one morning, only grass, and I knew something was wrong. My regular vet had no openings so I took her to the emergency vet. X-rays showed what appeared to be rocks in her intestine, which she passed, but an ultrasound the following day revealed an obstruction she could not pass. Emergency surgery was performed and a piece of rubber toy she had dug up in the yard along with all that grass she ate to try and throw up were removed. Through this 4 day or so process I only worried about Quincee and not how much it was costing. As soon as I could I had insured her with Healthy Paws and I am so thankful I did. After my $250 annual deductible, they paid 90% of Quincee’s $5,400 bill. Healthy Paws let me know when the vet filed the claim for me (my choice), kept me up to date on the progress, checked up on Quincee’s recovery, and sent my reimbursement checks within, I believe, seven days. Quincee’s older brother has also been insured with Healthy Paws since he was a baby. I now know what a wise decision it was and I really do recommend them to all the fur parents I know.

I have been a customer of HealthyPaws for over 3 years, for both of my dogs. I am thankful for this insurance! I feed my dogs very healthy, clean diets and they are not overweight. They get so much love, exercise and are so happy. BUT, emergencies do occur. And for all of their emergencies, Healthy Paws has been there. ER is expensive…and medication can be too. Healthy Paws sent us a get well card for my Ryder when he was in ER 3 weeks ago. They sent multiple emails checking on him. AND they are so quick with claims processing, that, I received the check, in less than a week after submitting it!!!! I will be able to pay off my credit card bill before any interest accrues. I highly recommend them. The cost is affordable. I think you can choose from 3 payment plans. I spend about $35 per month per dog. AND I spend more than that for coffee each month! So, there is no excuse that you cannot afford it! Their lives are worth it!

Five years ago I adopted a small terrier mix who had been a stray, so the shelter had no idea what her age or history was. I immediately got healthy paws, which turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Over the years they covered various vet visits, emergency visits, specialists, imaging, etc. Last fall after multiple specialist visits, extremely expensive diagnostic studies, and diagnostic surgery, she was diagnosed with bladder cancer (TCC) and given a few months to live. She began chemo the day after thanksgiving. Since then there have been two different chemo meds (1st was monthly for 5 months then switched to current which is every two weeks), numerous x-rays and ultrasounds, bi-weekly labs, a hospitalization, and a LOT of prescriptions. Every visit the vet emails me the invoice, I screenshot it and upload it to healthy paws app, and within two weeks get the reimbursement direct deposited and a very simple, easy to understand one page explanation of benefits. Never been denied, never any surprises, never asked for additional documentation, etc. With all there is to worry and stress about, knowing that I’ll be able to afford her treatment and not have to fight with the pet insurance makes a world of difference. Still doing chemo, and my pup is as happy and energetic and cute as ever thanks to healthy paws 🙂 I’ve recommended them to all my friends and family who’ve gotten new dogs, and they’ve all had great experiences as well

When I first got my frenchie Beau I knew they were high risk dogs. After a couple of scares I researched and compared pet insurance. Healthy Paws was the best out there hands down. Over the years they have really been relevant in saving Beau. We recent had a huge health scare and (knock on wood he seems to be getting better) , but without healthy paws I am not sure how I could have handled everything financially! They fast at paying the claims back and even reached out to check on how he was doing! I would not choose any others health insurance out there. Thanks again HP!

I have had my dog enrolled with Healthy Paws since 2011 and its amazing. My dog has had quite a few medical issues and Healthy Paws has been there every step of the way. Every time i would call with a question or concern about something i would get the nicest reps that truly seemed to care about what my dog was going through and it really made us feel like family. They have a very fast turn around time with claims which also is a huge help. I would and always recommenced Healthy Paws to everyone!

Some of these reviews must be fake. I am now on year 2 with Healthy Paws, the math is not correct in the reviews. The insurance does not pay 70/80/90% of the bill as they make it seem, they DO NOT COVER THE ACTUAL VET EXAM FEE. I took my vet to the dermatologist for a foot growth. The bill was $250. $200 of that was vet exam fee. So they only covered PART OF THE $50 REMAINING, AFTER DEDUCTIBLE! so 80% of $50. I got $40 back on a $250 vet bill. Plus I paid my $100 deductible (per year). THEY HAVE ALSO RAISED MY RATES EACH YEAR. I am a pet sitter and I was recommending them, but, they say “oh you submitted a mixed breed dog on your info, so actually your rate should be higher for your 2nd year. But that’s not correct, because they receive the vet paperwork stating what breed the dog is. They did this to my client too!!!! And they also raised my client’s rates for the 2nd year in a row. We think like all insurance, it’s a scam.
Tim
Clare – We do our best to be transparent throughout our website, during the enrollment process and in the policy documents available to each client in their online Healthy Paws account regarding the limited exclusions of our policy. Those exclusions are pre-existing conditions, preventative/routine care and the office visit fee (veterinary exam fee). Anyone visiting our website can see this information on our “Benefits, Coverage and Exclusions” page. By making the office visit fee (vet exam, emergency exam, recheck or consultation) part of the pet parent’s financial responsibility, it allows us to offer a complete accident and illness plan at an affordable monthly premium. Our policyholders value comprehensive accident/illness coverage and unlimited benefits at reasonable rates, which is why they choose to assume the responsibility of paying for those costs.

We also make every effort to inform our clients on how our reimbursement calculations work.

Premiums are based on your pet’s age, breed, and your zip code at the time of enrollment. We rely on information provided by our clients to determine this information. Within the online enrollment application, your pet was noted to be a of a mixed breed type. This information is reflected on each step of the quoting and enrollment process, then provided on your policy declarations page once enrollment is complete. Though we rely on the information provided by you to be accurate, we understand mistakes may be made. Once we received your pet’s medical history for their first claim, these records reflected the breed to be of a purebred type. To ensure accuracy and compliance with insurance regulations, we needed to update the premium for your pet.

We understand that no one likes any form of premium increase. Our management team works hard to keep our premiums as low as possible while still providing comprehensive coverage. New technology, advancements in veterinary treatments, and overall claim costs are taken into consideration when assessing our rates. We have seen an increase in the frequency of high-value treatments such as anterior cruciate ligament surgeries, cancer treatments including chemotherapy, and foreign body exploratory surgeries performed by veterinarians. These are some examples of procedures performed during the last 12 months that ranged anywhere from $3,000-$16,000. Your monthly premium is going up because the increase in claim payments has been faster than the premium increases in your state. As a result, we need to increase the premium level for all pets in your state so you and your pet can have continued access to the best veterinary care.

We are considering Healthy Paws for our dog, a 5 year old Shiba Inu. We don’t understand the difference between Exam Fees/Office Fees and Treatment (which includes “DIAGNOSTICS”).

Your sample policy below lists each. But does not show where the line crosses from “Exam” to “Diagnostics”. For instance, if an ophthalmologist puts drops in eyes and scans them with equipment for glaucoma, is that “exam/office visit fee” or “diagnostics? During xrays, would the radiologist cost be covered, or or they doing an exam? During surgery, would the surgeon cost be covered?

31) Veterinary Examinations Fees. Fees charged for the professional opinion of a veterinarian. Also referred to as
consultation, examination, referral, and recheck fees.
32) Veterinary Treatment means:
a. X-rays;
b. Laboratory and diagnostic tests;
c. Medication;
d. Surgeries;
e. Supplies;
f. Hospitalization;
g. Euthanasia; and
h. Nursing care;
provided by a licensed veterinarian and their staff under direct supervision.

Tim
Donna and Bob,

We appreciate you considering Healthy Paws for your Shiba Inu. In most cases, an invoice for any treatment from a veterinary hospital will have fees listed as an exam fee/consultation fee/office visit fee. If it is listed as such, they would be excluded from coverage.

I have had Healthy Paws insurance on three of my dogs for about five years now. Hank has had two ACL and one stomach surgery. Audrey has had one ACL surgery. Frankie is not allowed to get hurt. Healthy Paws has paid each bill quickly and without issue. Using Healthy Paws was one of the best decision I’ve ever made.

So I bought a 8 week old white boxer puppy back in December of 2018. In January I decided to purchase the Healthy Paws insurance for her. In March she started throwing up and wouldn’t eat. My daughter is a Vet Tech at our local VCA so she took her in. Come to find out she had swallowed my nasal pillow for my CPAP mask that disappeared weeks before. It was lodged in her intestines. After 3 days in the emergency room, surgery, meds etc…. the bill was $5,400 after my daughters employee discount the bill came to $3,400. I submitted my bill to Healthy Paws and in 2 days they were mailing me a check for $2,500. After the $250 deductible they covered 80% of the bill. After only making 2 payments on my policy they really came through for me. Best decision I’ve made in a long time.

If I could give Healthy Paws more then 5 stars, I absolutely would. They have continue to be there for me and my doggo Larry since day one. Every small, every large claim, I know I have Healthy Paws there to take away any financial stress of veterinary care. I have never felt any limitation to giving Larry the best possible care because of Healthy Paws.

I work as a veterinary nurse at a large university teaching hospital. Almost 2 months ago, Larry was diagnosed with aspiration pneumonia, a very mild case, nothing that required hospitalization. I was in touch with Healthy Paws regarding the diagnosis, and they were there to support every step of the way. Long story short, over a month of diagnostics/rechecks including: 4 sets of chest rads (all 1 week apart), 1 chest CT, multiple panels of blood work, hundreds of dollars of antibiotics (he is a newfoundland, big dog = big cost)… Larry went to surgery for a thoracoscopic lung lobectomy and pericardectomy as well as laparoscopic liver biopsies to remove a migrating foreign body.. something that is just plain bad luck. I was quoted up to $8,000 for this procedure. After 1.5 months of diagnostics, medications, treatments and the surgery… the best part is, I couldn’t even tell you how much it ended up costing. Healthy Paws worked with me and Larry very diligently to ensure that I had no added stress on top of Larry needing this very risky surgery. They helped pay the hospital up front and directly so that I had nothing to do besides pay the remains balance at the end.

After all said and done, I spoke with the business office at the teaching hospital where I work, and they said Healthy Paws was hands down the easiest insurance company they have ever dealt with. Having pet insurance is having a piece of mind – having it, and hoping you never have to use it. But when you need it, your pet will thank you. There should never be any financial restriction on the care you can give your best friend.

Larry did amazing post operatively, and was discharged from the hospital 2 days after surgery.
Thank you so much!!!!!!

Ive had many dogs over the years and have used many pet insurance companies. Healthy Paws is the best. Our pup was having successive urinary infections, each harder than the last. When our vet decided it was time for a more aggressive surgery, we never thought twice about doing it. We’ve had 90% coverage for our pup and its worth every penny. Unlike some insurance companies, they don’t pay 90% of what they expected the surgery to cost, they paid 90% of the what surgery cost. Period. And quickly. They even wrote to check in on our pup. That’s service

Saturday evening, before Super Bowl Sunday, our 16 month-old Bernese Mountain Dog pulled up lame in the left hind quarter. We decided to see if it resolved by the morning and Sunday morning he couldn’t even put weight on the Right fore leg! Up to the vet. Came home with not definitive cause but administering pain meds. That same day, during the first quarter of the Super Bowl, he could not breathe! He had 2 masses on his fore legs and something blocking his breathing. Seemed like he was falling apart on so many fronts. The 50 mile ride back to the vet was surreal, I was in the back with Whit praying for him, pounding on his chest to provoke some breathing and begging him to stay with me. The thing I didn’t have to worry about was how we were going to pay for his care. For the first time in 40 years of sharing our hearts and home with our canine companions, we had taken out pet insurance. We did this because we anticipated that, like our other Berners, Whit would likely experience orthopaedic issues in his 5th or 6th year. Never did we anticipate that before his 1st birthday, we would have over $10,000 in vet bills and that within the next six months we would add over $5,000 in a different episode! And, he has – apparently – recovered more quickly than his shaved legs have grown back the hair from the IV and other procedures! He is a wonderful, hardy fellow and we are so grateful for his recovery and that we have a partner in financing his health escapades. The claim submission process could not be more simple – just take a picture of the bill and send it on the app – and the reimbursement arrives in a week or less!
Amy
Healthy Paws is the 4th – and last – pet insurance we have had. We will never ever leave Healthy Paws. They are beyond excellent. The last time I submitted a claim, HP had the reimbursement for the claim in my checking account within about week. I would say I was astounded…but they do this consistently…..EVERY TIME I submit the claim is generally closed within a week or two.
I also appreciate all the flexibility in the type and cost of plan we have. I decide what type of plan I want, what my deductible is and what my reimbursement level is – all of which affect my monthly price.
In addition, the people at Healthy Paws are so lovely. They are kind and caring and sensitive to what we are going thru. They always reach out after a claim is closed and ask how our dog is healing. This is no form letter…it is always heartfelt and caring.
I tell everyone who has a pet about Healthy Paws. We’ve now been with Healthy Paws for over 4 years and they continue to bring a level of comfort and security about the care of our pets. When something goes wrong with one of our beloved dogs, the last thing we want to worry about is how much it will cost to give them the best care possible. And we don’t. And it’s because of Healthy Paws.
Linda
For the last 42 years I have fostered and adopted rescue dogs, several at a time (one time, there were five!), usually those with special needs. I’ve tried three other pet insurances, but the loopholes with the deductibles and the resistance toward claims, as well as the copious paperwork and delays, left me very discouraged. Then I found Healthy Paws, and my current rescue dogs now have far (far!) better health insurance than I do. Deductibles are not specific to EACH type of problem per year (which can be huge if a pet has multiple issues or mishaps), but rather one very reasonable deductible for ALL problems that occur in a year. Filing claims is easy online. Claims are settled very quickly–frequently within 48 hours. And they cover what they say they will–no sneaky loopholes. But the best part is that I don’t feel penalized because I take on rescues; if I don’t know a dog’s complete history, or have records available from before the rescue, they don’t reject me as have some other companies. Great team.

Signing up with Healthy Paws was the best decision we could have made for our pup who unfortunately has had a lot of health issues including a recent, unexpected surgery. In each case, Healthy Paws has covered these expenses and lived up to their promise. It’s so easy to use their app to submit claims. They process the claims quickly and will submit your reimbursement directly to your bank account if you choose. I can honestly say that without Healthy Paws we couldn’t have afforded to give our dog the care he needs. We owe so much gratitude to Healthy Paws! It’s a decision you won’t regret.

My experience was as good as I could’ve hoped for under the conditions. I lost my fabulous two-year-old border collie pup to a freak internal tear. I would have paid anything to have her recover, but to face her loss followed by the $6000 vet bill would have been intolerable. Healthy Paws was fast, efficient and the gal who handled my claim was gentle, supportive and sympathetic. The check arrived amazingly fast. I couldn’t have asked for anything more. I can only give them my best recommendation.
Bonnie Belk
I appreciate very much Healthy Paws’thoughtful customer care, and
the efficiency of their claims process. I have never had anything but the best experience with Healthy Paws, and I wouldn’t even think of having an animal companion without them. I have had pet insursnce with other companies, but nothing comes close to Healthy Paws. I recommend them every chance I get. They are a great company with terrific people making it that way.
Federico Galarraga
Healthy Paws has gained a customer for life from me, with my current pet and any other pet I may have in the future. I cannot thank them and recommend them enough for the amazing service they are running. Last year has been a bit rough for my Maltese, from neutering to bilateral hernias, but the ease and speed in which Healthy Paws handle claims made it invaluably easier. There aren’t many things in life anymore that I would say are worth every penny, but this is.

When we got our new puppy and had his first vet exam, the vet encouraged us to buy pet insurance. We’ve had four previous dogs and each had expensive and extensive medical conditions, so buying insurance this time seemed like a no brainer. After doing my research, we chose Healthy Paws. Are we glad we did! You get to pick the amount of kind of coverage and depending on cost, how big a deductible. When our dog was about a year old, he showed signs of some kind of allergies. Soon after several vet visits, it was recommended to us to take him to a specialized dermatology veterinary hospital. There they did testing and sadly, we found out he is allergic to many outside elements as well as mold and dust mites. So, with the testing, continuing prescription meds, and bi-annual blood testing, having Healthy Paws has been a huge help. Claims are just as easy as taking a photo of your bill and response time is immediate and a settlement within a week. We’ve also had emergency vet visits and just recently he had surgery to remove a growth near his eye. The majority of those expenses were taken care of and even got an email from Healthy Paws asking how Mac was doing after his surgery!
This is why you purchase pet insurance for the unseen illnesses and emergencies that can happen and often will. We are so happy we chose Healthy Paws!
Erika Perez
My dog is thankfully healthy but recently had a accident that required a pretty serious surgery. He is family so we would have done whatever it takes to get him well but without Healthy Paws the financial burden would have been great. His insurance plan is worth every penny! They processed the claim without delay. We received reimbursement less than 2 weeks after his surgery AND they checked in to see how his recovery is going.
Wonderful customer service, I wish human health insurance worked this great! I am thankful I chose Healthy Paws!
Stephanie Ferrato
I can’t even began to thank Healthy Paws. Our dog is here with us today thanks to them. It’s been a blessing to have this insurance from the beginning and I highly recommend every pet owner to have it.

Healthy Paws thank you for always being there for us and for checking on our fur baby to see how he is doing.

I am so grateful to Healthy Paws for the unwavering support they have given me with my dogs. I have four Golden Retrievers, two of which have ongoing life-threatening illness. Ivy, who is 10.5, was diagnosed with GME at 6.5 years old. This disease can NOT be cured, it can only be managed with medication. She takes two different daily medications, one of which has a cost of $140.00 per month. She also must have Chemo therapy once a month at a cost of over $300.00 per month. Because of Ivy’s illness, any medical condition is an emergency and must be tended to immediately regardless of the time of day or night. NEVER, not once, has Healthy Paws given me one ounce of grief over these costs or treatments. NEVER, not once, have they rejected my claims. To the contrary, they have paid every one of them in an expedient and caring manner.

Hayley is 6 years old. At age 2, she was diagnosed with Refractory Epilepsy. She takes 5 different medications every 8 hours, one of those medications comes at a cost of $222.00 per month. The others come to around $150.00. She has also had to be hospitalized twice for seizures that would not stop without intravenous medication. NEVER, not once has Healthy Paws rejected any of the claims submitted for her care. Healthy Paws has stood behind their promise to pay ALL legitimate claims. I used to worry that Healthy Paws would eventually cut me off, as the cost of my two dog’s monthly health care is HUGE, but to the contrary they have NEVER even hinted at such a thing!

Without Healthy Paws keeping their word, standing behind their promises, I would have to let my two girls go as I could not afford the immense cost of their medical care. Thank you from the bottom of my heart Healthy Paws.

Also, I just wanted to say, Healthy Paws does NOT pay for the vet visit charge, or consultation charge in emergencies or when you see specialists, nor should they; they tell you this UP FRONT. They DO pay for ALL other charges involved in your pets care, that is more than fair and a HUGE blessing when you need that support!

Happy Customer
I’ve been using Healthy Paws since I adopted my puppy 4 years ago. They offer a number of coverage options, and the claims process is simple and straight froward. It really is a breeze working with Healthy Paws!

Recently, my little guy had to recieve back to back surgeries. The first for an obstructed intestine, then again for a post surgery infection. As you can imagine, the bills piled up.

Healthy Paws reviewed and settled both claims so quickly, I didn’t even have time to be stressed! I can’t say enough how nice it was to be able to focus on my pets recovery. It was such a seamless experience, I mention how much Healthy Paws helped me every time someone asks about my pets recovery. If only Health Insurance for people was this easy!

Richard
This review site casually mentions that Healthy Paws doesn’t cover “Veterinary exam fees”. This is a HUGE exclusion. I’m not talking about wellness exams or routine physical exams… Healthy Paws DOES NOT COVER THE VETS EXAMINATION OF YOUR SICK OR INJURED PET!! This is the exam where the Vet diagnoses the problem, prescribes meds and otherwise takes care of your sick or injured pet. This charge is often the biggest single charge on a vet bill. I took my puppy in with a severe cough. The vet examined her and prescribed antibiotics. Healthy Paws covered the minor cost of the pills but not the larger charge for the Vets services. A Healthy Paws Manager said to me, ‘It would cost too much if we covered the veterinarians exam charges’. What kind of “Health Insurance” doesn’t cover the doctor?????

SO BEWARE, Healthy Paws is cheap Insurance from a cheap company.

Tim
Richard – we’re sorry that your baby was having coughing issues. We do our best to be transparent throughout our website, during the enrollment process and in the policy documents available to each client in their online Healthy Paws account regarding the limited exclusions of our policy. Those exclusions are pre-existing conditions, preventative/routine care and the office visit fee. We sincerely hope your girl is feeling better!
Pattie
If the office visit charge is the “biggest single charge on a vet bill”, I would seriously think about changing vets! Most insurance companies don’t cover the visit charge. It’s the cost of treatments, meds, surgeries and procedures that cost the most and those are covered by Healthy Paws. Some companies do have “wellness plans” that cover annual health “check ups” and such. Maybe you should look into one of those. Healthy Paws is the best! They have covered many costs for one of my dogs who probably would not be here today if it were not for Healthy Paws and the thousands of dollars they have reimbursed for his surgeries and meds and procedures. They list on their website exactly what is and isn’t covered so if you read it and pay attention, you will know right from the start what is covered! I will never have a dog who will not be covered by Healthy Paws!

I had my share of personal health issues and zero health insurance most of my life, so when it came to my animal companion, I didn’t want finances to ever hinder his chance in getting the best medical care and keeping him healthy. I bought pet insurance hoping I would never really need it but liked the idea of having a “just in case” kind of thing for my boy Watson.I frequented my vet quite often as I would worry about my little guy but every time we left with Watson with a clean bill of health..

Then one night Watson started to breath with difficulty and off to the ER vet we went. I was hoping he was having an allergic reaction or something but instead we were told the most heartbreaking news and he was diagnosed with congestive heart failure.
Since the time he was diagnosed (10/16/18) until his passing (11/26/18), we had multiple vet visits, cardiologist visits, and ER vet visits. Watson had to go through many tests and xrays and was put on medication. I was fortunate enough that Watson was covered under Healthy Paws and I didn’t have to worry about how much everything would cost and instead I was able to focus on just being with him.

The time I could have spent worrying about his bills, I was able to worry about him– I was able to keep my mind focused on him and not worry how I would pay to keep him alive…
I remember filing my first claim and I thought there was no way it would be as easy as taking a photo of my invoice and then waiting for reimbursement. Surprisingly, it was as easy as that.
I know some people are reluctant for Healthy Paws because ‘exams’ are not covered but in a sense the exam fee is the equivalent to paying a copay when you have human health insurance, so I don’t understand why so many people complain about it. The fact is
they cover what really matters— They cover the things you will not always be able to afford and give you peace of mind knowing that you can not focus on your furbaby rather than how you will pay for whatever treatment.

I remember after my numerous ER visits I received an email from Healthy Paws checking in on Watson and I thought that it must be one of those automatic messages they send to everyone, but I figured I would write back to them since I was going through such a difficult time of watching my best friend’s health decline. And again, to my surprise, it wasn’t an automatic message but an actual, real human being checking in on him. It was comforting to know that real people were behind me and Watson and real people were there for us.

To anyone that has/has had an animal companion diagnosed with a terminal disease, we know how hard it is to feel so alone of losing our furry soul mates.. Not many people understand that a dog is more than “just a dog” or a cat is more than “just a cat.”
Healthy Paws showed so much kindness and compassion for me, but especially for Watson, I was awestruck. When Watson unexpectedly passed due to multiple valve ruptures I was beyond devastated… Actually, I’m still beyond devastated.. in fact my heart is still broken beyond repair… hence why it’s taken me so long to write this review, but I digress.

A week or two after Watson’s passing I received a card from Healthy Paws filled with hand written messages for me and Watson that made me sob uncontrollably but in a good way, not in despair like usual. These real people wrote such heartfelt and touching things that were more meaningful than the card I received from the ER vet where Watson had passed… To some you might think, big whoop, a card? But if you have never lost your good boy/girl, you will never understand how much a simple card can ease your broken heart, even if it’s just a little bit.

The main point is that Healthy Paws was there for me and Watson. They made the claim process so unbelievably easy that you might think there’s a catch or you’re doing something wrong, but trust me, it’s that easy. They gave me a sense of relief in which I could spend all my time being there for Watson and not worrying about how I would pay to keep him alive. And what I feel really sets them apart is they are filled with real, caring people who have so much compassion and will make you feel less alone when you feel most broken.

I still have Healthy Paws for my other little one and should my heart ever heal from the pain of losing my one and only heart dog Watson, I know if/when I adopt another furbaby I will be signing up for Healthy Paws again and for the rest of my life. They truly are exceptional and go above and beyond compared to all other pet insurance companies.

And to that I must say, thank you Healthy Paws for being there for me & Watson.

We have Healthy Paws and absolutely love it. The first year of coverage we did not submit any claims because as others have stated their policies do not cover office visit fees, preventative medications (tick & heartwood medications), or dental cleanings.
Unfortunately Salvatore started having allergy and skin/ear issues. Healthy Paws has been wonderful. We have taken Sal to several specialists (in and out of state) and his claims have always processed without issue. In the past year alone Sal’s bills have totaled over $10,000. All of his laboratory, medications, surgical and diagnostic procedures have been covered. We chose the $250 deductible with 90% reimbursement. There are no claim or benefit limits (ie no limit to the number of times Sal can be seen for ear issues or a cap on the spending costs for his ear issues). Anytime I have ever had a question…the team at a Healthy Paws has always been so helpful and compassionate. I really wish they would consider branching into human health care.
We have had coverage since 2015, this is the first year his premium has increased, and the increase was minimal. He just turned 8yrs old this August.

When looking for health insurance for my two new puppies I looked at all the options. When I contacted Healthy Paws with some questions they were very helpful and answered all my questions. I liked the ease of the signup process and the usability of their phone app. It was not until a year later that I needed to actually use the insurance and when that time came I was pleased to find that the upload process and claim process was so easy. I uploaded the records that I received from my Vet and then snapped a picture of the bills and in a week Healthy Paws had reviewed all the records and reimbursed me for the covered procedure. My Dog ended up having bone cancer and lost her leg. Having Healthy Paws insurance allowed me to be able to afford the surgery and get a second chance with my beloved dog. The best part was that after the surgery I got a personal email from one of their employees asking how my dog was and if there was anything else I needed. They also took the time to look at the rest of my policy to see that I had another dog and asked about him as well. I felt like they really cared and I am glad I went with Healthy Paws. I would recommend Healthy Paws to any pet owner.

I can’t say enough positive things about Healthy Paws. I first purchased insurance when my boy Teddy was a puppy, and I’m thankful every day that I did. I carry the maximum level of insurance (90% coverage after a $200 annual deductible) on Teddy and it’s worth every penny. The first year of Teddy’s life we were at the vet every 2 weeks for chronic skin issues, & more than one emergency visit when he’s ingested things that he shouldn’t have. We have spent thousands of dollars over the last couple years on procedures, medications, and skin related medical care and the majority of that money spent has been refunded by Healthy Paws (90% to be exact!). His most recent issue was an ER Vet visit that alone cost me roughly $1,000…. I received almost $900 in refund checks for that ER visit. When a $1,000 bill essentially turns into a $100 bill, I have been able to focus on what matters most- my boy’s health – and not have the added financial stress. I had no qualms about choosing to provide the needed care for him because I didn’t have to choose between spending the money on appropriate care and taking a chance on his health. Looking to the future, as the owner of a giant breed dog one expects to eventually run into some sort of hip/joint problems (though I take excellent care of my boy through nutrition, supplementation, and appropriate exercise). I have peace of mind knowing that heaven forbid that does occur, cost of care won’t be an issue.

While my boy has had many visits to the vet and we have unfortunately had to take advantage of our coverage with Healthy Paws frequently, I would still consider this coverage worth it for any household pet- even those who seem to never have health issues. The peace of mind it brings is easily worth the cost per month (which is more than reasonable in my opinion). We use the Healthy Paws app to submit claims, which makes it super easy, fast, and convenient to do. I will be using Healthy Paws for any future pets we have. If you have a puppy, get pet insurance early, it’s the smartest thing I have done. There have been no negatives to our experience, and any interaction we’ve ever had with any Healthy Paws staff has been pleasant, professional, and genuinely caring for my boy. I can’t say enough good things – thank you Healthy Paws!

Chris
I have had Healthy Paws for one of my dogs, Teddy, a 5 year old German Shepherd mix since I got him in 2015. He has the 90% coverage and $100 annual deductible plan. Last October he was diagnosed with a Mast Cell Tumor (cancer). I had it surgically removed and all is well with him now. I get him checked out every 6 months now by the cancer specialists to make sure hes still cancer free. They do various tests and ultrasounds of his belly etc. Healthy Paws has not once been a issue in any claim process. One time they forgot to reimburse a blood test and all it took was a simple phone call to get it corrected. Healthy Paws allows me to treat his cancer (or any possible future issue) much more aggressively rather than worrying about potential money issues.

Only complaint (and a minor one) is that the premiums have gone up since I enrolled him but I understand that is part of the cycle. After having Healthy Paws help treat his cancer, its a small price to pay for having a friend and family member in good health. Highly recommended!

Kathleen
I truly loved Healthy Paws from the moment we enrolled our first dog with them over 5 years ago. Since then we’ve added 2 more dogs & are now in a bind as to whether we can continue paying the insane rising premiums. We should not have to raise our deductible and lower our coverage just to be able to afford the same policies due to the alleged rising costs in veterinary care. We live in Southern California in the city & our veterinarians have definitely not raised their prices as drastically as Healthy Paws claims.

Our dogs are our children as many of you in the forum feel the same about your own & would do anything for them. Unfortunately Healthy Paws has made me realize pet insurance and being able to provide for the health of a pet is a luxury meant only for the wealthy. Heathy Paws is an insurance business just like any other and they don’t have a pets’s life and best interest at heart. If they did, they wouldn’t be gouging pockets with insane premium increases.

In 2014 our rates increased from $176 to $185. Since 2015 it went up from $185 to $285 and now the updated increase for 2018-2019 for so-called rise in veterinary expenses… $285 to $363. In four years the monthly premium went up $187. From $2112 a year to $4356. It has more than doubled in 4 years. Really… to keep up with rising veterinary costs?

Tim
Kathleen,

Thank you for your kind words – we are so happy that Healthy Paws has been able to play a part in assuring that your babies have access to the best available medical care. We realize that premium increases can be a stress financially and that this increase was larger than normal. Our management team works hard to keep our premiums as low as possible while still providing comprehensive coverage. New technology, advancements in veterinary treatments, and overall claim costs are taken into consideration when assessing our rates. We have recently seen a rise in high value claims due to an increase in the availability, use and cost of emergency/specialty care. During the past year there was an overall increase in the frequency of high-value treatments such as anterior cruciate ligament surgeries, cancer treatments including chemotherapy, and foreign body exploratory surgeries performed by veterinarians. These are some examples of procedures performed during the last 12 months that ranged anywhere from $3,000-$16,000. Rest assured, we will never penalize you with higher rates for making claims. All pet insurance companies, no matter how they market their benefits, will raise rates to keep up with the rapidly rising cost of veterinary care. Please give your babies big hugs for us!

My cat, Cheese, recently ate a ribbon and needed a lot of medical care. I was SO thankful to have him covered by Healthy Paws! He had experienced some health difficulties previously, before I had him insured, and it was just awful. Every procedure I had to think about money, and it was terrible to be in the position of weighing the cost against my pet’s life. I am a student, and I ended up spending literally all of my savings to pay for his care. This time when he was ill, I could just focus on making decisions that were best for Cheese, without having to worry that I would bankrupt myself in the process.

I will agree with the negative reviews that the premiums do go up SUBSTANTIALLY each year. My pets are both still fairly young, so it’s still worth it. Even if it gets to $100/month, I will probably continue the policies, just so that if/when they get sick, I can avoid worrying about money and focus on my pet’s health.

Also, I have had great experiences with customer service every time I’ve called. I don’t think they are quite as responsive by email, but I’ve never had to wait on hold for a long time and everyone I’ve spoken to has been very helpful and friendly. I recommend Healthy Paws to all of my friends!

Happy customer
My dog Tinkerbell was recently diagnosed with Leptospirosi causing her kidneys to be in danger of failing. She was rushed to an emergency vet for a week where they were unable to get her levels to drop. Essentially we were told her best chance to live was to be transferred to an animal hospital that could preform dialysis. It is scary enough worrying if my little girl was going to survive let alone the financial burden. Fast forward over two additional weeks at a new hosptial and Tinkerbell is finally showing improvement. In addition healthy paws has covered all of her treatment which so far had been close to $15,000. Without the coverage I dont know what we would have done, I am so thankfull for healthy paws.

I’m another really enthusiastic fan of Healthy Paws. My Golden was diagnosed a year ago with bilateral elbow dysplasia requiring surgery when she was not quite 11 months old. During the time it took to book her for surgery at a veterinary college hospital, the CrCLs in both rear legs ruptured. She had her first surgery at the end of March and the second at the end of August. Healthy Paws has been amazing. It’s incredibly easy to file a claim online and to upload documentation. They interfaced directly with my local veterinarian and the veterinary college hospital to get any records I didn’t have. Within a week of filing my first claim, it had been approved. It has taken just a couple of days to get approval for subsequent claims. I received reimbursement really quickly. I’ve also been impressed with their customer service. I received a follow-up email after my dog’s most recent surgery asking how she was doing. From start to finish, Healthy Paws has made a really stressful time a lot easier. I can’t recommend them enough to anyone looking for a pet insurer they can rely on.
Chris
I’ve had to file a few small claims with Healthy Paws in the past, and all were handled quickly (reimbursement received within 2 weeks), and easily through their app. However, 2 weeks ago our family had to experience a costly near-tragedy with our furry child. Our 3 year old bulldog went in for surgery to open up his airways to help him breathe more freely, but complications from the surgery resulted in him not being able to breathe at all. A planned overnight visit turned into six. Twice during the week the vet called me to caution they were concerned he would die soon. For all the pain it put him through, it was an emotional nightmare for us. Each step of the way good news was followed by bad and of course the vet requires upfront payment for everything they do before they do it. In the end, he was transferred to another hospital where a second procedure cleared his airway and saved his life. The vet bill accumulated to $11,000, which we had to draw down our savings, borrow money from family, and open a new credit card to cover. Honestly, we didn’t have the financial ability to handle that expense, and the only reason we did was because of our confidence in our policy with Healthy Paws. And sure enough, less than a week after filing a claim it was approved, and our policy reibursed nearly 90% of the bill. What they cover and what they don’t is very clear from the start, and customer service is incredible. Representatives seemed genuinely concerned for the wellbeing of our dog in follow up calls and email. Our policy with Healthy Paws saved our dog’s life- we never could have considered the life saving procedure s that were necessary without it.

This is the best company I have ever had for pet insurance!! Not only do they respond quickly to my questions, they pay promptly and always have a very caring attitude!! We love Healthy Paws and have been with them for almost 10 years. As a very selective breeder of Golden Retrievers, I refer all our new puppy families to Healthy Paws and I always get very positive feedback from everyone!
Mike
Hi Michelle,
As someone who has used it for years, what has your experience been regarding yearly increases? Have they been small….large? My wife and I are looking for a dog to rescue and we are considering pet insurance. Thanks!
Joe
We have been with Healthy Paws for five years now and they are simply amazing. Having this coverage has allowed us to provide levels of care to three different dogs that we wouldn’t have been able to do financially otherwise. Today’s veterinary hospitals have much of the same capabilities and equipment that human hospitals do. However, it is scary how quickly things add up when you need care. Years ago we ended up having to make somewhat financially-based decisions for two of our other dogs and we decided then “never again”. I cannot describe how great it is to be able to walk into the emergency vet, or more recently, specialists’ offices knowing that Healthy Paws has our babies covered. Our 7-month-old labradoodle developed a strange mass on the roof of his mouth at 12 weeks. We realized we were in for a bit of a roller coaster ride when it started baffling our very experienced family vets. The ride continued after three separate opinions by some of the country’s most experienced veterinary minds. Just being able to seek multiple “second” opinions knowing Healthy Paws would have our backs was more than worth the premiums. Then we were told to get a CT scan at an oncologist’s office. That estimate alone came it at over $2,300. I’m happy to say the Healty Paws reimbursement hit my back account today covering almost $2,000 of that. So far, we are over $3,000 into our little guy’s case it’s only been diagnostic so far – meaning no treatment has actually begun. We are maybe $500 out of pocket on that total, making all of this possible. We are currently scheduled for surgery with the best doggie dentist in town in a couple of weeks to finally get this removed and get him healed up. We know Healthy Paws will be there for us through it all and I just can’t say enough good about them!
Holly
After a scary incident, Healthy Paws sent me an email to check up on Ellie’s progress. They have really helped tremendously. It’s tough when you adopt bulldogs, or any breed, that were rescued from puppy mills as you don’t know the health conditions you may encounter. Ellie is the first dog that I decided to look into insurance for as my others were seniors when I adopted them so I didn’t think it was an option. She seemed healthy with no obvious issues early on but we’ve had a couple scares in the 9 or so months I’ve had her. Having insurance makes the decision to give her the best care that much easier. I would never NOT do everything I can for my dogs but I’m thankful to not be maxing out my credit cards to do it now.
In short, I’m glad I did my research and went with Health Paws 🙂
Wong
totally understand, just found out they increased my premium around 25% after annual review. my pet is still in the middle age, and never file a claim. they just want the money, and they increased whatever they want to. when I called, no clear explanation about the increase.
Tim
Wong – Unfortunately, we cannot find your account in our system with any degree of certainty using the limited information you provided in your review, but we’ll reply to your issue the best we can.

We understand this increase was larger than normal. Our management team works hard to keep your premiums as low as possible, but there continues to be an overall increase in the frequency of high-value treatments such as anterior cruciate ligament surgeries, cancer treatments including chemotherapy, and foreign body exploratory surgeries performed by veterinarians that ranged anywhere from $3,000-$16,000 in cost. Due to these increasing costs of new technology and advances in veterinary care, rates were adjusted. These increases provide you the opportunity to offer your pet the best medical and diagnostic options available today. Rest assured, we will never penalize you with higher rates for making claims. All pet insurance companies, no matter how they market their benefits, will raise rates to keep up with the rapidly rising cost of veterinary care. We do our best to be transparent regarding annual premium increases by including this information on the “Frequently Asked Questions” page of our website.

Lisa W
I just looked at your FAQs to see what exactly is said about premium increases. Couldn’t find anything. ??
Tim
Lisa – you can find the information here under the section titled “Billing”.

Mike
Very disappointing insurance = seems like Its only good if your pet doesn’t require specialist visits, treatments and consultations as that is not covered and is in the 100s of dollars each time, they just cover meds and tests , finding out before i signed up would be nice as it turns out i would be better off just putting 50 dollars a month in a cup at my house and would have come out ahead so far – i guess the racket is you wont read the very fine print
Tim
Mike – We regret that you are not satisfied with our plan. We do our best to be transparent throughout our website, during the enrollment process and in the policy documents available to each client in their online Healthy Paws account regarding the limited exclusions of our policy. Those exclusions are pre-existing conditions, preventative/routine care and the office visit fee.

In regards to our coverage, if a pet needs treatment for an accident or illness, and it’s not a pre-existing condition, they’re covered. This includes x-rays, blood tests, ultrasounds, surgery, hospitalization, prescription medicines, etc. and any reimbursement is based on the deductible/reimbursement level a client chooses at the time of enrollment.

For years, I tried to determine whether pet insurance was worth it and if so, which company to go with. And, now, I’m singing from the mountain tops that Healthy Paws is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made! For the last 2.5 years, we’ve been overjoyed with their customer service, responsiveness and ease of submitting claims. Even our old dog has sterling coverage that just recently saved his life as he was in and out of the hospital. Today, he is curled up at my feet snoring thanks to Healthy Paws. I cannot say enough good things about this company; they truly prioritize your furry family above all else.
Joe Tesoro
Healthy paws is a top notch company and came through when our dog Mabel ate a squeaker toy. My wife and I are so relieved that she’s safe and happy. Healthy paws has got us through the whole ordeal taking the cost of any medical procedure to help her out of the equation. We were able to make sure she got the best possible care. Paid the claims fast and it’s cut and dry with no confusion for the consumer. Thank you!

My 8 year old lab Rebel has been insured by Healthy Paws since he was 5 years old. Last year he had some neck and back issues and Healthy Paws covered all his chiropractic appointments!
Recently, I found a mass in his mouth. It turned out to be cancer. Melanoma. He has had 3 surgeries and is currently under the continuing care of Cornell Oncology. Healthy Paws has been fabulous throughout this entire ordeal. Invoices are super easy to submit, they keep in touch with you while you’re waiting for your claim to be approved which happens really fast, and reimbursement comes in the form of a check in the mail without delay. They have not disputed a single fee and have been very kind as far as asking how Rebel is doing too!
I am a practicing small animal veterinarian in Syracuse, NY. I elect to have pet insurance for my pets as there is so much advanced specialty care available for pets now, and I want to make sure my pets can get everything they need when it becomes necessary. Thanks to Healthy Paws I’ve been able to focus on making the best medical decisions for Rebel without having to even think about how much things cost, let alone ask.
I researched all the pet insurance companies before making my choice. I have been extremely pleased with Healthy Paws and I recommend them without reservation to any pet owner. I encourage all my clients to consider getting pet insurance while their pets are young, without preexisting conditions. After my recent experience, I will be happily recommending Healthy Paws. They have been absolutely wonderful.

Beware of HEFTY annual premium increases. Mine has gone from $38 in 2014 to $60 now. I haven’t moved or changed vets.
Tim
Robert – We understand that premium increases can be a stress financially. Our goal is to keep our premiums as low as possible while still providing comprehensive coverage. New technology, advancements in veterinary treatments, and overall claim costs are taken into consideration when assessing our rates. We have recently seen a rise in high value claims due to an increase in the availability and cost of veterinary services. This premium adjustment ensures we can continue to provide comprehensive coverage for your pet should an unexpected illness or injury occur.

Rest assured, we will never penalize you with higher rates for making claims. All pet insurance companies, no matter how they market their benefits, will raise rates to keep up with the rapidly rising cost of veterinary care. We do our best to be transparent regarding annual premium increases by including this information on the “frequently Asked Questions” page of our website

We understand that no one likes any form of premium increase not matter how much it is, but our competitors premiums are historically higher overall than your premium with Healthy Paws. We’d be more than happy to send you these comparisons from the other leading pet insurance companies based on what your current deductible and reimbursement level. Just contact our customer care team and ask to have a price comparison emailed to you. Give Jake a big hug for us!

MINE HAS DOULBED FROM 2014 to almost $70. I’m done with them. I can save the money myself, instead of throwing it away.
Mike B
I will say that the premium increase seems like a lot of money. However, I will say that we had to put our 13 year old Labrador retriever down last Christmas after a battle with cancer. At the time I didn’t have this kind of insurance for her and the costs were well over $10,000 dollars. I feel in the long run the cost will be worth it and if our dog never needs it, I can live with that. When you consider the cost of car insurance and the fact that their premiums rise much greater each year, seems like a no brainer to me. Our dog is a member of our family and cost is not a primary concern.
Lisa Wise
“Our dog is a member of our family and cost is not a primary concern.” – I wish that no one had to consider cost as a primary concern, but then, we wouldn’t need insurance if that was the case. I have had my 3 dogs insured with Healthy Paws for 4 years. Last year, when the rate jumped almost 25%, I was unhappy but I still thought like you that it’s a worthwhile purchase. I decided to reduce their coverage level so I could keep our costs about the same and still benefit in case of something major, like the cancer you mention. We’ve also had to make decisions for past pets based on cost, when we didn’t have insurance. But, I just got this year’s renewal with ANOTHER 25% increase. One of the dogs is now over 10, but he’s also a small breed, so why should his rate increase 30%?! The other 2 small, mixed-breed girls are only 5 and 6. Again, I’m faced with the decisions – Do I pay this high rate? Do I cut back coverage again, making it even less helpful if something happens? And, most importantly, should I stay with this company now that I can expect hikes of 25% or more? By the time my dogs are of an age when they’re more likely to need care, I won’t be able to afford to keep this insurance and will have paid them thousands of dollars over the years – for nothing. It looks like I need to do some research into the probabilities and see if it’s worth keeping this expensive safeguard or just roll the dice. Sad that it’s come to that point.
Brittany
My pets have been covered by Health Paws for over 6 years. I never exceeded my annual deductible until about three years ago for one of my pet. I have spent months researching different insurances and I even tried the wellness plan from Bansfield prior to covering my pets with Healthy Paws. I decided that it is much more affordable to pay for the wellness care myself versus paying for illness, emergencies that can run into thousands of dollars. For me, wellness care expenses are much more stable and predictable versus accidents and illness. I do hope they will cover spay and neuter one day because we need to fix the epidemic of homeless pets.

The downside to Healthy Paws coverage is: they do not cover dental care and chiropractor and vet office visits. I am more than happy to pay vet office visit because I consider it a co-pay and I can predict how much it will cost versus medical care costs. It is not a problem for me. However, the dental care in my area is at least 1500. If your area offers non-anesthesia dental cleaning, it is much more affordable if your dog has the right temperament.

They have been awesome to my pet who has had several emergencies and requires ongoing medical care. They have not given me any issues with coverage. There was only one time there was a minor misunderstanding. It was easily resolved with further clarification from the vet in writing and references to our earlier conversations about my pet’s pre-existing documentation. For those of you who want to get a policy with healthy paws, I recommend you to have your pets medical record reviewed upon enrollment and have a conversation to make sure you know exactly what is covered and what is not covered so there are no surprises or any disappointment down the road.

I also read in the article that dogs over 8 is only covered up to 60% with 750 annual deductibles. I am not sure if that is accurate because my dog is 13.5 years old and her policy has not changed for over 6 years except for some increase in premiums ( I don’t like it, but not enough to end the plan). I really hope the article is not correct about older dogs coverage. It will hurt older dogs from being adopted into a good home and their chances to have good golden years.

I tell everyone to get their pets insured and they will be grateful they did! It might feel pointless for a few years until you really need it and you will be grateful they are covered! Thank you Healthy Paws for being good to us!

Our 10 month old puppy, Leo was recently diagnosed with a very serious condition requiring him to have surgery on his skull and spine. Within 24 hours of submitting our claim, we had an answer regarding our coverage. Within a few days, we received our payment. During a very stressful time for our family, Healthy Paws helped alleviate some of our worries with kindness and efficiency. I highly recommend Healthy Paws for your pet’s medical insurance!!
Joe Stuetelberg
Healthy Paws is absolutely the best. Amok has had a few pretty costly medical expenses including the Bloat surgery he just had. They have never given me a hard time on anything and reimbursed in 2 days on claims of all shapes and sizes. I highly recommend looking into them if you haven’t already. They have been a literal life saver.
Dina
So far Healthy Paws has not covered any medical bills. I am seriously doubting it is worth it.

I have had a horrible experience with Healthy paws. They repeatedly asked for medical records that were already sent to them twice or more. They never processed a claim or communicated what was going on but when I would call and ask them did they receive everything they needed they said oh yes we have everything then they would do nothing, this happened 3 times! Now they have denied the claim for what sounds like a different dogs symptoms. Run don’t walk from these people!
Tim
Linda,

The records we received from your veterinarian did include your pet’s name and date of birth, which matched the information you entered when you enrolled your pet and where identical to the records you recently sent to us.

We apologize for the delay in the processing your claim. All claim decisions are based off of your pet’s medical records and the signs/symptoms that are noted by your veterinarian. We use a pet’s medical records and notes written by the attending veterinarian to determine if there are any pre-existing conditions which would keep us from approving a claim. As you stated in your review, we did receive your pet’s records, but our team had contacted you in regards to earlier records from another hospital your pet had been to. Once you clarified that there were no more records, we were able to process your claim. Unfortunately, since your pet’s condition was noted prior to enrollment and therefore a pre-existing condition, we could not provide coverage. We’re sorry to lose you as a client and hope you and your pet stay well.

I have a cat that acts more like a dog! My 12 year old tuxedo cat was recently diagnosed with Feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD). His treatment included catheterization to clear his bladder, numerous vet visits, blood and urine tests, frequent monitoring at the Vet’s office and 2 weeks of meds for after care at home. I submitted all the bills for his treatment using the HealthyPaws app, which is amazingly easy to use. My claim was reviewed and approved the next day and the funds were in my account within days.

HealthyPaws understands how stressful it is to have a sick pet and worry about the cost of care. The monthly premium I have paid is well worth the peace of mind it gives me.

I love Healthy Paws!!! They have the best customer service, they have never denied any services needed for my pup (soon to be two) and he’s had a bunch of minor problems, but they’ve never given me any problem. I normally get reimbursed within two weeks of claim submission.

I used a different insurer for my other dog, and they canceled her after a bait and switch scheme, but unfortunately she’s un-insurable with Healthy Paws due to allergies, otherwise she’d be hooked up too.

Oakley, my 65 pound lab mix, had an unfortunate condition called patella luxation in both knees that he was diagnosed with when he was 1. Although it’s not a completely uncommon condition, its pretty unusual in larger dogs. The vet explained if Oakley did not have the surgery, due to his size, he would be quite miserable when he got older as he would develop arthritis, likely be bow-legged and his knees might slip out of their grooves permanently. I was forewarned the cost of the surgery, hospitalization, medications, X-Rays, exams, IV’s, etc. would total about $3,000 per surgery. Since he was covered through Healthy Paws, having the surgeries was a no brainer. I had already chosen the plan with the $200 annual deductible which would cover 90% of covered expenses. Healthy Paws was true to their word. For example, one of my most costly individual statements was $2,487.81. After my $200 deductible, I received a check within days, no hassles, no questions asked, for $2.039.03. This is the least stressed I’ve ever been about a pet’s health as I know that now I can afford to take care of him and still pay my electric bill. One of the best investments I’ve ever made!
Kathleen
Healthy paws has been fantastic to deal with! Their customer service is wonderful. My 4 legger needed to have an extensive leg surgery. They covered everything other than my deductible and kept in email contact with me the whole time. I even got a follow up email asking how my dog was feeling and recovering. I don’t have human children so my little 4 legger is my son, and I truly feel like healthy paws understands that. They show compassion and respect, as well as enthusiasm and knowledge in every communication I’ve had with them. I would highly recommend!

This is a great company! When we got our puppies 6 years ago I was thinking I should get insurance but was afraid the whole claim process would be too complicated. However, with two puppies I figured chances were good it would come in handy. So glad I chose Health paws. I was able to pick a plan to fit my needs and budget. The claim process is so easy. I just scan/email the invoice and they let me know within a few days the claim status and I have a check a few days after that. Also they truly care about my girls. I get informative email newsletters with tips that can keep my girls out of harms way and stay healthy.
Donna
This company is awesome!! They truly care about you and your pet… they process claims as quick as 3 days from submission and paid within 5 days of that… their staff is friendly, kind, concerned for your pet and many have talked me through tears when my baby girl was sick. The plan i have is VERY affordable. And the best out there.. i’ve had them for over 5 years and they will always be my pet insurer. Great company!!!

When I got my dachshund I did the research on the different insurances out there and finally decided on Healthy Paws because of their reviews and their coverage. My friends and family thought I was silly for getting insurance on a dog….but I had a dachshund and they had a history of having IVDD. Last week my dog became paralyzed. I brought him to the nearest neurosurgeon and he underwent surgery. I contacted Healthy Paws and they told me not to be worried about my coverage a andbd to concentrate on my dog. I even received texts from them inquiring on his health. He is 5 days post op and his claim has been paid. I have never been treated so well. This is the best money I have ever spent.
Brett
Amazing pet insurance. I recommend them to friends and family. They check in on ourdog when they noticed she was having a lot of medical care. They handle the claims quickly and easily–with no issues. They were easy to contact and cared about the dog’s health just as much as they did paying us back their portion of the claim. i would highly recommend them to anyone

Before signing up for Healthy Paws, I did some pretty careful research on Pet Insurance to try to find the best insurance for my Papillion. I had previously purchased pet insurance for our other dog, a Chihuahua, and was disappointed with the coverage. I realized choosing the best pet insurance for my Papillion from Day 1 would be advantageous so I would not be stuck with “pre existing” conditions if I chose to switch insurance down the road.
Nearly four years went by before I needed to utilize my pet insurance from our Papillion. I had been traveling abroad and while I was gone, my Papillion had swallowed a foreign body and it became lodged in her small intestines. At the same time, her stomach had also filled with fluid. She needed emergency surgery to have this foreign body removed, and a nasogastric tube was placed to empty the fluid that had built up in her stomach.
I submitted my claim to Healthy Paws for my dog’s extensive and expensive surgery, plus after care in the ICU. Given my past experience with other pet insurance for my Chihuahua, I was not really expecting any reimbursement. However, within a week, Healthy Paws had issued a claim reimbursement check and covered everything exactly as spelled out in my plan. I feel very fortunate that my Papillion has made a full recovery and that Healthy Paws fulfilled their commitment to pay reimbursement for my claim. Thank you Healthy Paws.

When we got our little Dewey, someone mentioned that we may want to look into getting pet insurance because small dogs can have accidents. Well Healthy Paws Pet Insurance had one of the highest rankings, so I went with them, never dreaming we would need it.
But our little fella did indeed have an issue with one of his legs and required quite an extensive surgery to fix it. Healthy Paws put us at ease immediately, with the assurance that the surgery would be covered.
But it goes way beyond that, the people at Healthy Paws were so concerned about Dewey and always asked how he was doing. Even two weeks after his surgery and we had received our check, they were so kind to send an email checking to see how he was doing. Who does that anymore? Well Healthy Paws Insurance people do, they genuinely take their job serious and they know how important our fur babies are to us.
They are even fur baby owners themselves.
If you want great and affordable worry free coverage for your babies, look no further.
Sincerely,
Dewey’s Mom

Getting my dog was the best decision I have ever made. Choosing Healthy Paws was the next best decision!! I’m so thankful that I chose Healthy Paws. They have been amazing. They have a great app which you can easily submit your claims through. They keep you posted on the progress of your claim, and the turn around time has always been quick. Their customer service is EXCEPTIONAL! They even sent me a follow up email to ask me how my dog was feeling after her surgery. I highly recommend Healthy Paws

I really can’t say enough good things about Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. I did a lot of research before deciding to go with Healthy Paws and I am certainly glad I did. From the ease of filing a claim to the superb customer service, they have exceeded my expectations to date. The stress of a pet that’s in need of medical attention coupled with the financial burden that a significant episode can create will really exacerbate anxiety and worry. The peace of mind that Healthy Paws has provided has alleviated that burden. One word that I believe sums up my experiences with Healthy Paws is genuine. I have yet to speak with anyone at Healthy Paws who hasn’t been genuinely interested and concerned with what I was calling about. 5 stars for Healthy Paws!

Healthy Paws not only provided exactly what they said they would, but did so in an extremely efficient, courteous and kind manner, well exceeding expectations. Our friends recommended Healthy Paws to us, and it’s been the best decision we’ve made for our pet. Their rates seem very fair, their service above and beyond, and I only wish I could find health insurance this good for humans–I’d happily work with Healthy Paws and my own local vet for any accidents I personally had, and definitely for any of my pets. Overall I highly recommend pet health insurance as it can take the financial stress away from an already stressful situation of having to help your pet in an accident, illness or injury–I haven’t had any experience with any other agencies, but I can’t imagine anything better than our experience with Healthy Paws has been.
Tony
Healthy Paws provided amazingly caring, prompt, and efficient service for my dog’s emergency room care. I can’t imagine a better service and I highly recommend Healthy Paws for anyone interested in purchasing insurance for their pet. I wish all companies could be this efficient and friendly!

Healthy Paws has been absolutely amazing. We signed up our dog when he was only a year old and have had continuous coverage for 8 years now. We originally signed up because my husband and I were both grad students (read: very limited funds!) and while we could afford the necessary day-to-day care for our new dog, we knew that an unexpected and large vet bill could easily bankrupt us! In the 8 years we’ve had coverage, we have had 4 occasions to file a claim (we only use it for the big stuff). Every time, Healthy Paws has covered everything they agreed to cover and turned the claim around within only a few days. It is so amazing to have that peace of mind that no matter what happens, we’ll be able to make the best choice for our dog without worrying too much about what it will cost – for example, when he tore his knee ligament and needed it repaired, we could have a serious discussion about which repair technique would be most appropriate for him and which surgeon we should see without feeling pressure to go with the cheapest option. I recommend HP to every single pet owner I meet – I really can’t say enough about them and I’m so glad I made that decision 8 years ago!

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance is awesome! For everything they do and everything they have done for my last rescue girl Sadie and for my current rescue Millie! While I sadly lost Sadie to lymphoma- they were with me every step of the way and it’s why I’ve continued to trust in their support and superior service for Millie!! Healthy Paws rocks – Jessica

I mirror what everybody else has said, literally the easiest interaction i have ever had with an insurance company.

They covered the expenses of the surgery exactly as their benefit booklet suggested they should. Love you guys.

Absolutely the best Pet Insurance out there. Can’t say enough good things about them. Claims are processed quickly and your reimbursements are received within 2 weeks if not sooner. My Fox Red Lab Shotgun has Copper Storage Disease, if it weren’t for Healthy Paws Insurance, we would not be able to afford his monthly meds and quarterly labs. He was given approximately 2 years to live after the diagnosis; he’s almost 6 now and very healthy. He’s a very active Lab, and just recently tore his knee; so he had a TPLO Procedure 2 weeks ago. Healthy Paws inquired to see how their client was doing! He is a working dog. He volunteers as a Therapy Dog at MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital and TIRR in the Texas Medical Center. He is also a Canine Ambassador at Houston Intercontinental Airport as well as a Crisis Response Canine. We will do anything for our pooch and have only the BEST insurance for him, and that’s Healthy Paws.

I have been very pleased and impressed with Healthy Paws insurance. Both of my dogs are insured by Healthy Paws, and I have found their claim reimbursements to be fair and fast. The reimbursement checks usually arrive within 2 weeks of claim submission. The customer service reps that I have spoken to are polite, courteous and professional. It’s so great to be able to make medical decisions for my dogs without having to base those decisions on finances. I wish Healthy Paws would offer insurance to humans; I’d switch my own coverage to them in a second!

I am writing this to encourage any pet parents looking for pet insurance to go with Healthy Paws. There are no words to express how grateful we are for this insurance and the simplicity of their process.
In September of last year, during our workday, my parents picked up our pups for a playdate at Grandma and Papa’s house. This was not out of the ordinary, my parents live four houses down from us and our pups absolutely adore their grandparents. On my way out to lunch I received a call from my dad saying that something was wrong with Barkley and that my mom had rushed him to the animal hospital. My dad did his best not to panic me but the fact that my mom didn’t even have a moment to call me to tell me herself only indicated that it was serious.
Without hesitation I headed for the Animal Hospital; it was fortunate that I was already in my car on my way to lunch. When I arrived one of the vet technicians was waiting to take me into the exam room, another sign it was very serious. The technician in with my mother explained to me that Barkley was in the back being worked on and that when he came in he wasn’t even able to hold his head up, he was horizontal and unresponsive. She then proceeded to ask questions about what he was doing at the time this occurred, asked me what food he’s been eating, asked about his recent behavior, etc. It was hard to focus when I was so panicked. After the technician finished with her questions I immediately asked if I could see him, she said she would ask.
Another technician came in to update me that he was responsive now and on an IV and oxygen and that I could go back and see him. I was heartbroken when I saw him, truly one of the saddest moments of my life. Barkley under normal circumstances is the happiest, funniest, and sassiest dog that I, or anyone else who encounters him, has ever known. They told me they had run some tests and that the doctor would be in to see me soon. I stayed with him as long as they would let me and then returned to the exam room.
Finally, the doctor came in to the exam room and proceeded to tell us that Barkley had zero platelets and was likely in DIC. She said he would need a blood transfusion, which would need to take place at the emergency clinic since they were not set up for that treatment. She advised me that I may need to prepare myself that he would probably not make it through this. I was devastated. Barkley, at the time of this event, was only 2 ½ years old. I could not bear the idea of losing him ever, yet alone so young. I called my husband and he immediately left work and came to the animal hospital.
Hours later, once he was stable and the emergency clinic was open, we transported him there. It was 6 days of transferring him from the animal hospital during the day to the emergency clinic at night. The pain of what felt like abandoning him twice a day was very difficult to endure. We desperately wanted him to recover.
For the first few days it was touch and go, he didn’t seem to be getting much better, but we kept on with every treatment plan the doctors tried.
About a week after the incident it was finally safe to take him home. He was still recovering and there was still a ton of care to be administered but he was on the mend!
Since then we’ve had routine checkup visits to ween him off medications and make sure his levels are staying normal. He is officially off all prescription medications, although, he is now on prescription dog food for life. We still have a little bit of a road ahead; routine checkups, until a year of good bloodwork. However, for the most part he has made a full recovery and is 100% back to his normal, hilarious self.
We still don’t know what caused this to happen. He was going to the bathroom in the backyard at my parent’s house and was moseying around. When he came back to come in the house he suddenly began vomiting repeatedly. We don’t know if he ingested something in the backyard, or what. What we do know is that he will never be allowed unsupervised again!
I share with you this long story to hopefully convey what a traumatic experience this was, which made having Healthy Paws in our corner that much more meaningful. Needless to say his care was, and continues to be very expensive. And while I’d like to say there’s no amount of money I wouldn’t spend to save my pups, the reality of life doesn’t work that way. We could not have gotten through this without knowing that we could afford his care because Healthy Paws would be there. The simplicity of their plans, claims process, and timely reimbursement gave us one less thing to worry about and allowed us to fully focus on taking care of Barkley.
Dixon and Barkley are our babies, since we have no desire to have human babies, we consider them our children and members of our family. So in our eyes Healthy Paws made it possible for us to save our baby and keep our family whole. We could never thank them enough!

Healthy Paws has been a lifesaver for our family. We signed up for their health insurance for our dog Bruno (now 5 years) when we got him as a puppy. Bruno has had several health issues – bladder stones, ripped-off toenail, shoulder muscle detatching from the bone, and lumps on his back and tail that needed to be removed. These issues required ultrasounds, CT scans, physical therapy, surgeries, and tail amputation. Healthy Paws has covered all of the diagnostic tests and treatments Bruno has needed, the claims process is very quick and easy, and we receive our reimbursements promptly. We have had the confidence to get Bruno the treatments he needed because we knew Healthy Paws would always be there for us. There is no way we would have financially been able to get him the care he needed if we didn’t have Healthy Paws insurance. His health issues have been very stressful for us, and it has made a world of difference that we don’t have financial stress to worry about on top of it. I would (and often do) highly recommend Healthy Paws to any pet parent looking for health insurance for their pet.

Healthy paws is fantastic. We got healthy paws right after we got our Boston puppy, Leonard, about 18 months ago. Their app is simple and easy to use and filing claims is seamless. Recently Leonard started having seizures and lenny has had overnight stays, tests, mri’s, more tests and prescription meds. Healthy paws has covered 90%, customer care was fantastic and they have saved us thousands of dollars. We are lucky to have the service and Leonard’s life is better for it. I highly recommend.

Healthy Paws has proven to be the wise choice for our pet. The caring customer service and efficient claim processing could not have been better. They provided helpful and confident coverage when we needed it. They warrant the highest rating!
Tom
I have been a Healthy Paws customer since 2013 but only recently that I had to use their service for the surgically removal of 3 large cyst on my small dog. I found their customer service to be simply outstanding. They made the submission of my claim very easy and they completed my claim in under 2 weeks for which they covered 90% of my dog’s surgery including all related cost, medicine, and even taxes. I highly recommend them and appreciate all their help as it allowed me to focus on my dog’s recovery without stressing over the cost of the surgery.
Sara
We are so thankful for Healthy Paws Pet Insurance!! We certainly had hopes of never having to use it unfortunately our fur son had a complete CCL tear. But so grateful we chose Healthy Paws! One of the reasons we love Healthy Paws is we were able to choose the best surgeon in our area so he would have the best opportunity for a complete recovery!!

Also extremely grateful for how quickly they processed his claim! Their customer service is outstanding!! They even checked in on him after his surgery to see how he was doing! Really highly recommend Healthy Paws Pet Insurance!!

Val Bruno
The best! Absolutely the most sincere, genuine, authentic group of humans helping me pay to keep my dog healthy. My frenchie has had a myriad of issues (poor angel) and HealthyPaws has not only helped me pay for, they’ve PERSONALLY checked up on her after big procedures, called me with follow up, and NEVER EVER given me grief about paying her bills. That is such a weight off my shoulders!

In September of 2015 I gave myself a birthday present of health insurance for my dogs. I researched companies and read reviews and Healthy Paws came out on top. I have not been disappointed. I have had several claims since signing up, some minor and others major and HP has been quick and efficient to get the claims paid. The peace of mind this gives me is indescribable. Recently my dog Rosie had an oral tumor and as I was standing in the specialists’ office reviewing the estimate of charges, I wasn’t sick to my stomach worrying about the cost, instead we could concentrate on determining the best plan for her surgery and recovery. Getting insurance was the best decision I’ve ever made. I currently have 4 dogs insured with HP.

I’ve been really happy with Healthy Paws’ coverage for our lab-pit mix. Last December, he tore his right cranial cruciate ligament (like a human’s ACL) and tore the meniscus, so he needed surgery costing more than $3,300. After I submitted the claim, Healthy Paws asked for the medical records from our primary care vet and the surgeon, and within a couple weeks they completed the claim processing, and paid 90 percent after payment of our deductible.
Their website made it easy to track the claims, but it was really easy to call them up and speak with one of their claims processing staff members.
I can’t say enough good about Healthy Paws: coverage of major, unexpected issues is what pet insurance is all about, and they do it right.
Christy
We’ve had Healthy Paws Pet Insurance for 3 years now and we have never been disappointed! We decided to purchase insurance for our lab about a year after he joined our family, and boy am I glad we did! Everything was fine when we got him, but a couple years later he started getting food allergies. The poor guy has been in and out of the vet non stop. Not only has Healthy Paws lived up to their policy, but they also check in to see how he is doing from time time. They have been great! Submitting your claims are quick and easy through their phone app.

Our animals are like our family members and when they become sick, you will do anything to help them. More often than not, vet bills can be extremely costly. Rather than getting in a financial pickle or having your pet suffer, I would strongly recommend considering Healthy Paws. You will not be disappointed!

Adam
Really easy working with them. I have a large mixed breed dog who’s had a series of injuries with complications – very expensive vet bills. Healthy Paws has been awesome and always paid the share they promised they would, no challenges. It made making the hard vet decisions a lot less stressful when we don’t have money issues hanging over our heads. Insurance is there for the “what if.” We all hope we won’t encounter health and injury problems, but it happens. That’s why insurance exists and we pay the monthly premium.
Ernie Sheppard
We absolutely love Healthy Paws! This is hands down the best pet insurance there is out there for your pets. Recently we were told that our dog Tony had to have surgery. For a lot of people surgery is often very expensive and not everyone can afford to have it done. Sometimes people have to make choices between saving their pet or trying to pay off a large veterinary bill. Because our dogs are insured through Healthy Paws we knew that Tony could have the surgery that he needed and we wouldn’t have to worry about not being able to afford it. Healthy Paws offers various deductibles and reimbursement plans that you can fit to the needs of you and your pets. Having had several dogs in the past who had cancer or heart problems, and having had to pay thousands of dollars to try and save them, we had decided that with our new dogs that we would carry insurance on them so we could make sure they always received the best medical coverage they could get. Healthy Paws has made that possible for us to do that. I highly recommend this insurance.
Sally Eastwood
Healthy Paws could not have been more helpful and efficient when my dog needed major surgery on her leg. They make the claim process so easy: just upload copies of the vet/surgery invoices and they will start right there and then. People think insurance is expensive and yes, it is, however major surgery is ridiculously expensive. Thanks to Healthy Paws I got back around $3,500 of the $5,000 I paid for surgery. Thank you!
Tom
Thank you for your email checking on our pup, Jethro is doing great now! Thankfully he didn’t need surgery so he was able to be the same crazy boy he always was quick! Knowing we had Healthy paws to cover him made this entire process go smoother and gave us a piece of mind that was much needed during that time. I do need to thank you and your team for their professionalism and compassion during this stressful time!

Thank you again for all you do to protect our furry family!

Mary Jo
Our new puppy has had quite the start to life. Cut paw and eating a foreign substance in which she had multiple vet visits and ultimately having to have an endoscopy! Healthy Paws was there all the way for us. Checking on Lucy and quickly processing our claims. Thank you to all the staff for being such a kind and wonderful insurance company for our little girl. We appreciate all you do at Healthy Paws!
Nancy King
We got Healthy Paws Pet Insurance for our very active new English Cocker pup, never dreaming that he would need it. We chose Healthy Paws after a lot of research, and with the recommendation of our vet. When he was 6 months old, a foxtail burrowed into his thigh, migrated to his knee, causing a bad infection which ultimately required 3 surgeries and extensive rehab at a boarding facility.

Healthy Paws has never questioned the large expenses, and has paid very quickly. We are so grateful that Healthy Paws has relieved the financial burden and worry of the situation. The Healthy Paws staff is always friendly, helpful ,and supportive.

Kerrie Drew
Healthy Paws is by far the best insurance company I have ever had. My dog has better insurance then me! They have completely stepped up and are taking care of my dog. The app is wonderful and it’s a breeze to submit a claim.
Kathy Peluso
Before we had Healthy Paws, our Akita/Husky mix had two catastrophic incidents (burst spleen and abdominal masses) within a few years that put us out nearly $24,000 to save his life. We could not afford it, but we managed to find the money. It took us years to recoup the costs. Many other folks may have had to make a very difficult decision to let their beloved pets go. Then our Siberian Husky blew out her knees and cost us another $6000. Enter Healthy Paws Insurance! Although the premiums seemed high, our Siberian Husky recently had to have a huge mass removed from her shoulder and it was such a relief to know that we had her insured by Healthy Paws. They paid the promised 80% within two weeks that we submitted the claim. That claim alone more than made-up for the seemingly high premiums in reimbursement of costs and piece of mind. In the future, if we choose to adopt another pet, they will not enter our house without Health Paws insurance!!!

EXCELLENT! We had a most unfortunate event in which our pug decided to eat a plastic toy and needed emergency surgery- we were worried about out lil girl BUT Healthy Paws took the financial stress away and helped us focus on getting our pug better!! Healthy Paws was fast- all claims are online with submission of medical records and we were reimbursed very quickly! I cannot say HOW THRILLED WE ARE TO HAVE HEALTHY PAWS!!!
Tamara
I hear my Veterinarians words ringing in my ears. Did you buy pet insurance? My answer yes. .. She said “good, this is the perfect example; why everyone should buy pet insurance.” My sweet Labradoodle puppy broke his right front leg right on his growth plate. Healthy Paws Pet Insurance eased our financial burden of such a costly surgery. They were there right when we needed them just as advertised. Every transaction has been seamless with them. Excellent customer service team. Clearly they must have animals they love and cherish as family members as we do. They truly care and it shows.
It’s money well spent for peace of mind and ease. There are not many companies today that truly show as much compassion as Healthy Paws does. They have been a pleasure to deal with considering the circumstances we were and continued to be faced with as our baby boy continues his long road to recovery.

My three-and-a-half-year-old French Bulldog, Beasley, became very ill very suddenly. He was extremely congested and was coughing up a tiny amount of blood. I was terrified, and immediately brought him to the local emergency clinic. At first, Beasley was diagnosed and treated in the hopsital for Pneumonia. After little improvement after a few days, the hospital conducted further testing and X-rays, later diagnosing Beasley with a Lung Lobe Torsion. He needed to have immediate surgery (on Christmas Eve, no less!) in order to remove one of his lobes. During this horrible time, I was blessed to not have to think twice about moving forward with the surgery, as I knew Healthy Paws would have me covered with my 90% reimbursement policy. What could have been almost $15,000 out of pocket cost me only about $2,000. Beasley is now a month out from surgery and flourishing! I am so grateful to the staff at Healthy Paws who made this surgery possible for us, and literally saved Beasley’s life!

I joined healthy paws about two years ago. At the time my pet was a happy healthy dog, but we had a very active and adventurous lifestyle and I wanted to make sure if anything happened to her I wouldn’t be stressed if the time came. This winter she had to get a total knee replacement (TPLO). This was a huge disappointment and shock to our family but having healthy paws was a huge relief once we scheduled the appointment and knew the procedure was going to be an expensive one. I paid a total of $600 for a $5,000 dollar surgery. Every claim I entered was dealt with promptly and fairly, and every conversation I had with a healthy paws employee was extremely helpful and professional. I never felt like I was getting ripped off or taken advantage of. They did not know my pet but I felt like every time I spoke with someone they truly cared. They even called the vet office directly the day of surgery and payed them directly which made the whole process a lot simpler and less stressful for me. I would recommend healthy paws to anyone with a healthy dog that lives an active lifestyle. THANK YOU healthy paws!

I want to share the story of my sweet boy Jackson in the hopes that other pet owners can make a wise and informed consumer decision about the important need of purchasing pet health insurance as early as possible in your pet’s life. My boy, a male yellow lab, was born in 2007. As a typical lab, he liked to get into everything. When he was around 4 years old, I started to become very concerned about the possibility of Jackson developing hip and elbow dysplasia later in life, a common congenital problem with labs. I looked online and could not find any policies that would cover congenital problems, as these are typically excluded from most ALL policies. Enter Healthy Paws…..After TONS of research (I am a neurotic attorney) I discovered that Healthy Paws would cover congenital/hereditary problems IF the pet was insured by the time they are 6. Time to sign up and so very glad that I did! I signed up for Jackson using a friends and family discount and chose the 90% reimbursement with a $250.00 annual deductible plan.

In 2011, Jackson started vomiting randomly for no reason and acting very sick. We were sent for an ultrasound, endoscopy and internal medicine consult. This treatment alone cost around $1,600.00 and we discovered that our boy had irritable bowel disease, a disease that would never go away. Healthy Paws covered everything after our deductible.

Fast forward to 2018, Jackson began drinking and peeing like crazy and we had to take him to the ER vet for 3 days where he was diagnosed with diabetes. He almost died because his glucose levels were so high. We had a follow-up hospitalization almost 1 week later when he was still not doing well. All of the hospitalization, treatment, and medication cost slightly more than $5,000.00. Again, all covered by Healthy Paws. Now Jackson has diabetes for life and our insulin costs $60.00 every 10 days, all covered by Healthy Paws. Additionally, Jackson requires regular vet follow-up and may require cataract surgery (around 3k) in the near future which will also be covered. If we had not had Jackson insured before these conditions developed, I am not sure we would have been able to afford to treat him on our own. I cannot tell you what a relief it was to be able to know that financial constraints did not have to be part of our decision-making process when deciding the best course of treatment for Jackson.

A few things I would recommend you consider in choosing a policy:

-Insure as EARLY in life as possible. ALL policies will exclude pre-existing conditions so you want to make sure that as many conditions will be covered as possible BEFORE they develop. If we had not insured until AFTER Jackson’s diabetes had been diagnosed, it would not have been covered but he was insured for many years before that happened so we were ok. When you get that new puppy, sign up IMMEDIATELY and then nothing will be pre-existing and, thus, excluded.

-You should expect that your premium will increase $5.00-$10.00 per month every year of your pet’s life. This should come as no surprise and should not dissuade you from buying insurance. As your pet ages, their treatment and exposure to risk is going to increase. You get what you pay for.

-Almost all dogs will have at least one visit to an ER hospital at some point in their life no matter how healthy they are. Someone swallowed a bone or ate a tennis ball. Someone got into the garbage and developed pancreatitis.
Someone had a strange lump that became cancer. Just one ER visit can cover the cost of all of your premiums combined. I do not have one single friend with a dog that has not had at least one visit to the pet ER over the course of its life. Jackson’s diabetes is going to cost us about $300-$400 per month for the rest of his life in just standard treatment and insulin alone, assuming we don’t have additional hospitalizations or the need for eye surgery (which we likely will have too). I am not sure we could have afforded to out-of-pocket that on our own.

-Do not buy a policy that has a lifetime cap or that makes you see a particular veterinarian not of your choosing, such as PetSmart requiring all treatment to be provided through Banfield.

-Do not buy a policy that excludes congenital or hereditary problems. Look at the list of exclusions and READ THE FINE PRINT. Again, Healthy Paws covers if insured BEFORE AGE 6.

-Consider the reimbursement and deductible you choose carefully. We have the 90% reimbursement with $250.00 annual deductible. This policy costs only a few dollars more per month but look at how much more we have saved in the long run by getting so much more reimbursed. The few extra bucks per month is worth it!

-Don’t let the fact that the examination fee, annual shots and routine dental work are not included dissuade you. The $85.00-$90.00 examination fee, $100 bucks per year on shots and teeth cleaning isn’t what health insurance is for. These are things we can actually afford to pay for!! The purpose of the health insurance is for all of the things we can’t afford to pay for. I have talked to at least 3 vets that said they know patient owners who failed to buy health insurance because they were disappointed the annual shots and $85.00 examination fee weren’t covered.

With all of that said, Healthy Paws has allowed us to provide the best treatment possible for our boy. The claims processing is fast and convenient; just take a picture of your invoice and have your vet send over the medical records. The policy is the most comprehensive and inclusive of any of the policies I could find after exhaustive research. Get the 90% reimbursement and insure early in life! Don’t wait until trouble arrives because then your treatment could be excluded as pre-existing. I am such a happy customer. I would never have a pet without health insurance and Healthy Paws will be my go-to as long as I have pets.

I hope Healthy Paws helps you save your pet’s life the way it helped save mine!!!!

Healthy Paws is an amazing company. We’ve been with them for seven years and have had two major incidences with our dog. In both cases, Healthy Paws has been quick to process and reimburse our insurance claims. Moreover, in both occasions, Healthy Paws checked in (either by phone or email) just to see how our dog was recovering. Healthy Paws takes so much stress out of the situation and let’s us focus on our dog’s needs.

Enrolling in Healthy Paws insurance for our chocolate lab was such a great decision. Our recent experience with the claims process was incredibly easy and an overall relief. Submitting a claim through the app and sending in medical forms is straight forward and takes about 5 minutes. The best part is if you need help and you call the help line, SOMEONE ANSWERS! This is not typical of insurance companies. My claims were reviewed, processed and paid out within a week. Afterwards, they even contacted me to see how my lab was recovering. What an incredible company and service.

I do not understand some of these slanderous comments. You should read and understand your policy before you set your expectations of coverage. If you have questions before you enroll, CALL THEM and they will walk you through examples and policy definitions. We did and have had no issues!

Bob
It has been such a relief to know Healthy Paws was there once again when we needed them. We have encouraged all our pet loving friends to check out Healthy Paws if they want the same peace of mind when it comes to their fury family members health care.

Healthy Paws has been simply outstanding and the best investment I could have made for my pet. My dog is three and a half and has had multiple surgeries for an ongoing medical condition. From processing claims to customer service they have been simply outstanding. I cannot recommend them highly enough. If it were not for them my dog would not be alive today. What bettter recommendation can I give.

I can’t recommend healthy paws enough. Their rates are extremely reasonable and when it came down to really needing them, they were time efficient and exceptionally supportive. My pup tore her ACL and the process to have it healed was extensive and stressful. Submitting my numerous claims was seamless and the reimbursement was quick and easy. I have recommended them to my Vet and Dog PT as well for other pet parents that are looking for a reliable insurance. 5 stars!!

We have been beyond thrilled with our experience! Healthy Paws has helped to make what would have been difficult decisions regarding the care of our dog a total no-brainer! Also, I cannot believe how easy and uncomplicated it is to submit a claim. I would recommend Healthy Paws to absolutely anyone.

I have many friends who are dog lovers and I always encourage them to buy HealthyPaws insurance for their pets. I am a firm believer of insurance and just cannot understand why every pet owner does not have it. What does a premium cost – one dinner out a month etc. Our friends just bought your insurance and I am in the process of convincing a family member. Thank you for your fantastic insurance and quality/professional employees.
Jeannette
Very happy with healthypaws! We have a dog who just turned one-year-old who has been enrolled since shortly after we got her as a puppy. We have the 90% coverage and $250 deductible plan. We’ve always had money put aside for unexpected pet care, but after several friends had expensive vet bills after dogs ingested socks, got snake bit, etc., we decided to try pet insurance with our newest pup. We didn’t expect to use the insurance much this first year, but as bad luck would have it, we did. She needed several treatments, xrays and a visit to a second vet who could perform a barium swallow and GI scope to finally diagnose and treat the problem. In our experience, the whole process with healthypaws was easy, their customer service was excellent when I had questions, and payments have been prompt. Our dog is much better now, and having the healthypaws insurance meant we didn’t have to recover our bank account after recovering the dog.
Kira
Submitting claims is super easy and reimbursement is always really quick. Plus, they follow up to check on how your pet is doing after surgery/illness/whatever. They covered both of my dog’s back-to-back knee surgeries. I’m super happy with them!

I am so pleased with my experience with Healthy Paws pet insurance and would recommend it to any and all pet owners.

My fiancé and I went back and forth on pet insurance for many months, because we had no way of knowing if it would pay off in the long run. Charlie was 100% healthy and never had trouble with counter surfing, chewing, or eating foreign objects. I eventually enrolled our dog “just in case” because I felt it would give me the most peace of mind during what could be an extremely stressful time. I’m pleased to report that our dog now has better health insurance than me!

Right before Thanksgiving, my dog, Charlie, was diagnosed with Addison’s disease. One day he was his happy, tail-wagging self and the next he was lethargic, nauseous, and refused food. After a scary couple of days where I spent my time carting him back and forth between his regular vet and the emergency vet, he received his diagnosis. He’s back to his old self now, but Charlie will be in and out of the vet’s office every month for the rest of his, hopefully long, life.

During this ordeal, I contacted Healthy Paws to double check my policy and the customer care representative was incredibly empathetic and patient. After my annual deductible, Healthy Paws has reimbursed me for Charlie’s vet bills and given me peace of mind going forward. I’m so thankful to Healthy Paws.

If anyone out there is thinking about enrolling in pet insurance– do it. Even if Charlie was living an Addison’s-free life, I rest more easily knowing that I will never have to ask myself how much money my dog’s life is worth to me.

I adopted my first French bulldog in 2007 – before pet insurance was widely available. After losing her suddenly to cancer in 2016 we adopted 2 Frenchies, and immediately got them enrolled with Healthy Paws. Best decision ever! While my boy is as healthy as an ox, my girl has been plagued with eye and ear trouble, and she recently had to have very serious surgery on her ear canal. Healthy Paws paid our claims quickly, and even reached out to us personally to ask how she was doing. Thanks to Healthy Paws, she is on the road to recovery and we didn’t have to stress about how to pay for her care. Thank you Healthy Paws – you guys are the best 🙂

Having a sick pet can be emotionally and financially exhausting. No one ever thinks the unimaginable could ever happen to your puppy or dog. In my case my 8 month old puppy was happy, energetic, healthy one day, then the next, he fell to the ground paralyzed. After days of testing, they found his spine had contracted an infection, that spread to his brain. Who would have thought??? With out pet insurance, i don’t think we would have been able to save him, or got him the care that he deserved. Getting pet insurance was the smartest move I ever made, and going with Healthy Paws was my best choice. They worked so fast! So easy! So friendly! They truly care about the well being of your pet. I am still so shocked with how easy they made everything!!!

After quite a bit of shopping around, I felt that Healthy Paws had the best plan for my new puppy. Everything from filing a claim, to being kept updated on the status of the claim, and contacting customer service, was all so easy! I am so happy with the choice I made of going with Healthy Paws.

We had 3 labs prior to our current guy Jude and didn’t have pet insurance for any of them. Our yellow lab had a few issues here and there and our vet had recommended we get insurance. I had done some research but didn’t think it was worth the money. I was wrong! He had 3 knee surgeries in the last 2 years and crossed the rainbow bridge in June. We spent close to $15,000 out of pocket to care for him. We enrolled Jude in Healthy Paws Pet Insurance immediately upon adopting him, we knew we couldn’t afford those costs again. Jude recently had an intestinal blockage and needed to have emergency surgery – we would have struggled to pay without the insurance. It was easy to submit the claim, the reimbursement check came quickly and Healthy Paws even checked in to see how Jude was doing. The premium is reasonable and the coverage is excellent. The insurance paid for itself, and then some, with just this one surgery. I recommend it to everyone.

I cannot say enough great things about Healthy Paws. We have 2 bulldogs and both are on the plan. One of our poor dogs has had multiple health problems this year. We’ve had to pay out over $10,000 in bills. Unrelated issues and each time huge bills. From a cherry eye to a leg operation and an ER visit. We would have gone bankrupt but thank god for Healthy Paws. Each time they paid out as agreed. No push back no weird exclusions. We had the 90% reimbursement checks before the credit card bill was even due. I tell every friend and pet owner I meet. You have to get this health insurance. All you do is take a photo of the bill from the vet and submit. Takes 5 seconds. They even call and email to check how our dog is doing. Just the nicest, most unexpected company I’ve dealt with in many years.

We have had our dog, Wynslow, insured with Healthy Paws since he was a puppy. We couldn’t be happier and more satisfied with the service we have received from Healthy Paws. Unfortunately Wynslow has had a couple of significant health events that required specialized medical care. Even if we did not have insurance, we would have sought out the best care possible for Wynslow. But having insurance was a source of comfort as we made our decisions on Wynslow’s care. The cost of the care was significant but its impact on our family budget was very much muted by the reimbursements from Healthy Paws. Dealing with Healthy Paws couldn’t be easier – we submit our bills/receipts to Healthy Paws and very promptly we are reimbursed the vast majority of our expenses. We have never had an issue with coverage; Healthy Paws coverage is very comprehensive, including prescription medications. It’s also nice to get periodic emails from Healthy Paws checking up on Wynslow’s wellness. It makes us realize that they keep an eye on their clients. Last thing, the monthly premiums are very reasonable. I can think of nothing negative with our interactions with Healthy Paws. It’s been one of the best decisions we made regarding providing a safe and healthy home for Wynslow!

I did my research before signing up for pet insurance and found the best reviews for Healthy Paws. My puppy unfortunately developed a rare auto immune disorder that ended up costing us a lot of money but Healthy Paws did a great job assuring us it’ll be covered and quickly processed our claims. They’ve been great with following up and explaining what is covered and what isn’t and have exceeded my expectations. I now encourage all pet owners to get insurance for their pets and very much recommend Healthy Paws. Thanks for saving my dog’s life!

I cannot say enough positive things about Healthy Paws. From the day I brought my puppy home 4 years ago, Healthy Paws made it incredibly easy to get her insured. Having done thorough research on all of the pet insurance companies, Healthy Paws was the leader as they offer lifetime care at an affordable price. Their customer service team is incredible, and their mobile app makes it incredibly easy to submit claims. My dog had a bout of pancreatitis earlier this year which was stressful enough but knowing that Healthy Paws was there to help made the situation a tad less stressful. A few weeks ago my dog tore her ACL and had to have a surgical repair, again Healthy Paws provided me with the support I needed to get her the surgery. And a week later, a member of their customer service team emailed me to check in on my dog! I don’t ever want to have to make a difficult decision concerning my dog because I cannot afford to get her the proper treatment. Healthy paws has been nothing but extraordinary and I cannot thank them enough for all they do!

Healthy Paws is truly an exceptional company. I am an insurance agent with 17 years of experience. My dog, Romeo an Am Staff, blew out his ACL and required surgery. I called to see what type of pre-authorization was required and what pricing limits I could expect. Neither applied, I was told to use the surgery center of my choice, and as long as I met the eligibility requirements, Healthy Paws will pay 90% once my deductible was met.
Once the surgery was completed, I submitted my paid invoice. I had previously submitted all of his medical records to speed up the process. My claim was approved, and a reimbursement check was mailed out within two weeks. I am beyond pleased. If only my health insurance were this simple and efficient.

I’ve had Healthy Paws for 4 years now, and my poor dog has needed it every year. Thank goodness for this insurance! They are no hassle and prompt in paying. Just download the app, snap a pic of the bill and hit submit. That’s it, then wait for the check in the mail. The rates do go up each year, but for what they have had to payout, other carriers may have dropped us. Healthy Paws did not.

After spending well over $10,000 in medical bills on our previous dog, we researched several dog insurance companies before we purchased our new pup. We felt the most comfortable with Healthy Paws and are glad we chose them. Our dog, Denali, sadly, was diagnosed recently with osteosarcoma and we made the difficult decision to have our dog’s leg amputated and to start chemotherapy to give him the best chance at survival. These decisions we had to make were tough, on their own, but the entire process was made easier knowing that Healthy Paws was there to provide us with the financial ability to give our Denali the best care possible. As per their website, within 10 business days of my submitting the statements for Denali’s biopsies and surgery, Healthy Paws processed our claim and will be reimbursing us for part of the bill. Denali will be starting 6 rounds of chemotherapy next week and, while we wish we didn’t have to go through all of this, it is all made much easier (and possible) because of the commitment Healthy Paws has made to us and our dog’s health. We cannot state strongly enough how pleased we are that Healthy Paws is exactly as they advertise!

I wouldn’t have been able to afford the medical care my 5.5 y/o golden retriever needed after suffering two torn cruciate ligaments if I didn’t have my Healthy Paws pet insurance. after about $14,000 of surgeries, medicines, radiographs and follow up visits (oh and an emergency hospital visit, after a bad reaction to Fentanyl), I was reimbursed 90% (after my $100 deductible). it was as simple as taking a picture of my receipt and submitting through my cell app. I have recommended Healthy Paws to my friends/family, it has more than paid for itself, but more importantly, it opened up all the options that I would have never been able to entertain. Only the best for my guy and he is recovering superbly!!! If you love your pups, insure them – be a responsible fur parent!

I have two rescues. Scrappy we adopted in 2013, he was 1 and a half, and Baloo we adopted in 2014 and was between 2-5yrs old.

Scrappy ended up testing heartworm positive in December 2013, despite having a clean bill of health from the rescue and being on heartworm prevention since we adopted him. Baloo is not an extremely sporty dog, but my Scrappy chases him around for 8hrs a day to make sure he gets tons of exercise. We recently noticed him limping, after x-rays and an exam that he needed to be sedated to have done, he was diagnosed with a torn CCL.

Thanks to healthy paws, both my boys were able to receive the treatment they required, including multiple night hospital stays and made a full recovery.

I would never have been able to afford at least $2000 for Scrappy and $4000 for Baloo’s medical expenses. I called the company multiple times to make sure they received medical records and ask questions about reimbursement. Every person l spoke to was knowledgeable and friendly. They followed up with my vet and even emailed to see how my boys were feeling.

The reimbursement of 90% is one thing but the personal attention is priceless. It feels like you are dealing with another human being rather than an insurance company that only cares for themselves.

I will never be able to fully express the gratitude I have towards this company for their services.

Our 2 year old Labrador had to have three cysts removed and biopsied. Thankfully they were benign! Healthy Paws made the claims process so easy and stress free! We are so happy that we made the decision to go with Healthy Paws when she was a puppy!

Outstanding!!! I wish my health insurance is as good as the insurance my dog has through Healthy Paws. My Great Dane has had two surgeries after eating 1) socks and 2) corn on the cob with a cob holder prong in it – and both times the people at Healthy Paws have been amazing. They are quick to reimburse and also very caring. When I called customer service to see if they’d received a claim, the rep saw how huge the bill was ($8000) and offered to expedite it. Amazing!!! They also checked in to see how Zane is doing, post-surgery. I hope you never have to use pet insurance but if you want to make sure your pet is covered, Heathy Paws is the way to go. Thank you, Healthy Paws!

I have been using Healthy Paws for my 7 year old English Bulldog Harley since he was 6 months old. He had NO pre-existing conditions when we signed up. This is important to know about Pet Insurance. Insure your pet as soon as you get them, preferably when they are around 6 months old. As you may be aware, English Bulldogs can have many health issues. Harley has been diagnosed with IVDD (Intervertible disc disease), some hip displaysia and arthritis, and recently tore his ACL on his right back knee and had to have surgery. For every instance, Healthy Paws has been there for Harley and for us! They are amazing. Unlimited lifetime coverage and deductibles that you can change to align with your ability to pay are the factors that made me choose this pet insurance company. The claims are super easy to file and the payment comes quickly. If you need to speak with them, the agents are knowledgeable and so willing to assist. Not only that, they will follow up to see how your pet is doing. If I could give more than 5 stars I would!!
Raechel A
I just have to say how incredibly grateful I am for Healthy Paws. We’ve had our two 6 year-old labs insured with them since they were 11 months old. One has been mostly no trouble (only one claim in 5 years); the other is a different story – starting from mere weeks after we were insured ($1200) and up to this past week where we just had to treat him for a lung tumor at the young age of 6 ($12,000 and more treatment ahead for him).

For sure, as pet owners, we know we’re likely going to out-live our pets; and I now know we will have a reduced life span with our guy because of the cancer, but the relief that comes along with not having to choose between their life or quality of treatment and money is indescribable.

Not to mention, they are SUPER FAST with reimbursement (one time, the check was on the way to me as I was on the way home from the vet), make it very easy to submit claims (app on my phone), have direct deposit for claims, and the customer service is impeccable.

If you do not have this pet insurance, GET IT NOW! (And NO, they aren’t paying me to say this – they are, however, paying for my pet to be healthy!)

Jacki
Healthy paws has the worst business practice ever. They take the percentage off BEFORE the total is applied to the deductible which is a rip off. The customer service is a joke and when they say they will get someone to respond back its an email and not a personal phone call
Healthy Paws
Jacki – We’re sorry that your dog was ill and that you were not satisfied with our customer service. In your initial call with our customer care team, you requested a follow up by one of our managers, but it was not specified that you wanted a call. If you did, we apologize for not catching that request. In our effort to get you the appropriate information, our manager chose to send an email and that was done within a half hour of your call.

We do our best to be transparent regarding how our reimbursement calculations work. We include this information (including examples) on our website within our “Frequent Asked Questions” page, and on our “For Customers” page within our website. Our process for calculating reimbursements are approved by each state’s Department of Insurance and are based upon the deductible/reimbursement level a client chooses at enrollment. There are many pet insurance companies that use this same method for determining reimbursement amounts. We regret we lost you as a client and hope you and your pet stay well.

I’m with you Jacki. I wish I had tried another company- trupanion or any other place. PetPlan was GREAT but then they changed their underwriter and the plans became too expensive (to actually recoup any money) for 3 cats. Anyway my cat has had a UTI on HealthyPaws and I am stuck with them now. It’s been 1 year 3 months with them, hardly ever submitting anything because they barely cover anything, and their rates have already gone up. I will be moving my other cats elsewhere–unfortunately one of my babies will be stuck with them. My cats are my family, and having them sick, bouncing between vets, emergency vet trips and taking off from work to get to the vet is already mega stressful, and knowing their insurance company will barely give me $100 from a $500+ dollar claim only makes matters worse.

To those complaining about preexisting condition denials. As soon as you get your dog get insurance..and dont get a sick dog from a store or shelter. I hope they can remain in business. My dog is now on medicine for life and yearly heart tests ive filed 50 claims. All covered.

I would like to thank Healthy Paws so much for their PERSONAL touch. Not only were they willing to work with me and California VeterinarySpecialist on payment arrangements, but my wonderful Healthy Paws representative, Nicky called me to ask how my fur baby was doing. Now who would have ever thought you’d have that through an insurance co. It made me realize that these are just not employees working for the company, but they are employees who understand how hard it is to go through anything with your loved pet. They had commitment, professionalism, but most of all, they had HEART!

Healthypaws has been nothing short of excellent when helping us deal with several different issues with our beloved yellow lab. Unfortunately, she has been a little accident prone in her early life and has needed more veterinary care than expected or wanted. Healthypaws hasn’t let us down and was always quick with response and reimbursement as well as concern for Ellie’s well being. We would not hesitate whatsoever in referring Healthypaws to others…and will certainly enroll any of or future pets with Healthypaws!

My company offered pet insurance at a discount and I bought it. I was glad I did because 9 months later, my beloved English Pointer developed thyroid cancer. I had not researched pet insurance at all even though I am an insurance lawyer. Treatment was very costly and the insurer paid on a schedule so I never knew how much I was going to get. In the end, the insurer paid about 60% of my claim. I was very unhappy and began to research better coverage for my puppies. I researched all carriers, rates of reimbursement and claims processes. I selected Healthy Paws. It is hands down the best.

I am so happy to have Healthy Paws Pet Insurance! My little beagle, Ivy, was mauled by two large dogs, leaving her with a split ear and large wound on her side. My emergency clinic submitted everything for my claim, and within a couple of days, I received an email from Healthy Paws letting me know they had received it. What surprised me was the first sentence was basically, “How is Ivy doing? “We’re so sorry you have to go through this”, etc. I’ve never had such service before. Healthy Paws really cares for their clients. I’m so happy I found them!

My dog Mojo scared his mommy quite a bit when he tore his CCL at 3 years old 🙁 He had to to have a very expensive surgery @$4500! We luckily chose the $250 yearly deductible and 90% reimbursement policy with Healthy Paws Insurance. So, we didn’t have to worry about making the choice to get him the best care.

Healthy Paws processed his claim quickly (within 2 weeks normally) & got us a check back. Thank goodness we had insurance. I am not sure what we would have done without it. Afterwards, they even sent me an email to ask how he was doing after surgery. We appreciate them caring and checking in on him. He is young and strong and recovering like a champ! I am sure in a few weeks he will be almost good as new & back to running and playing like a young crazy pup. I would recommend Healthy Paws to everyone who asks me!

Robert W
I have been a client of Healthy Paws for years. Unfortunately, I have submitted many claims for my pet. Never, never, have they questioned anything that I have submitted. If it wasn’t for them, I would not be able to give my pet the care that she so deserves.
I would be remiss if I didn’t recommend Healthy Paws to everyone. Don’t bother to try to compare other companies, just sign up!!

I was skeptical of pet insurance. When we adopted our dog Abby, she came with a packet on insurance from Healthy Paws for a reasonable monthly charge. After losing our previous pet to cancer, and since i could cancel the policy at any time, I tried it. I have made at least 4 Vet claims for Abby since then. The process worked exactly as advertised. Explanation of Claims are emailed and are clear, concise, and understandable. My last claim was for surgery amounting to $2,895.51. $118 for an exam charge was not covered, but $2,777.51 was. My check arrived 7 days after Abby’s surgery! If only Human Insurance was this easy and straightforward! We couldn’t be more pleased with Healthy Paws’ prompt and courteous service.
Romanie Baines.
I’m feeling rather disappointed with Healthy Paws. 2 weeks ago I received an email notification from them advising me of a rate increase. I’ve had their insurance for my 5.5 years old, 8lb. Chihuahua mix, rescue dog for 2 years now. We have never had a single claim. When I called Healthy Paws customer service to ask them why was my monthly charge going up, I was told that it was because of the increase in the price of veterinary care where I live. I live in Manhattan, NYC. and it certainly is not an inexpensive place for anything, however being a retired person on a small, fixed income, I’ve been taking my dog to the nearby Humane Society for his veterinary needs. They are likely the least expensive place in town. Yet Healthy Paws seems to assume that I would be paying top dollar somewhere. Sadly, in addition, I found their customer service representative to be cold and unhelpful on the phone when discussing this.
The Healthy Paws Team
Romanie – We’re sorry that your customer service experience did not meet our high standards. Due to the increasing cost of new technology and advances in veterinary care, rates will increase each year in most states (this is your first increase in 2 years). These annual increases provide you the opportunity to offer your pet the best medical and diagnostic options available today. Rest assured, we will never penalize you with higher rates for making claims. All pet insurance companies, no matter how they market their benefits, will raise rates periodically to keep up with the rapidly rising cost of veterinary care.

Even though we could not keep your increase as low as we would have liked, our competitors premiums are anywhere from 68% to 248% higher overall than your premium with Healthy Paws (based on your current reimbursement level/deductible). Our management team works hard to keep your premiums as low as possible, but there continues to be an overall increase in the frequency of high-value treatments such as anterior cruciate ligament surgeries, cancer treatments including chemotherapy, and foreign body exploratory surgeries performed by veterinarians.

Rescue dog lover
******DO NOT go to them if you have rescue animals!!!!********

Originally I got an email from them upon claim submission that they need all medical record AFTER, let me repeat, AFTER my dog joined our family. I even called and made sure I have nothing else missing.

My dog is a rescue we adopted him 6 months ago. The first occasion to a vet was a month ago with the symptom on the claim.

Now they sent me this on email:
“A pet….ON THE DATE OF ENROLLMENT must have undergone a COMPLETE clinical examination. ”

If I can’t provide this, “any signs and symptoms noted (in claims submitted) would NOT be eligible for coverage.” because they will consider those as pre-existing condition.

Luckily, I can provide since the dog was an owner surrender. and I know which vet they used.
But most dogs at rescue or shelters don’t have any medical records.

**********DO NOT use this insurance for rescue animals!!!!!!!!*********

The Healthy Paws Team
We are glad you have a place in your home for your rescue . Healthy Paws makes every effort to be transparent throughout our website and in the policy documents about the need for medical records. We request a pet’s medical records at the time of their first claim instead of requiring them at the time of enrollment. We use those medical records and notes written by the attending veterinarian to determine if there are any pre-existing conditions which would keep us from approving a claim. We realize that those pets can have limited health records and will work with those clients based on the records that are available.

No matter where a client gets their new four legged family member, we do require that a pet has a wellness exam (as do the majority of pet insurance companies). We do our best to be transparent about the need for a wellness exam in our website FAQ section and in the policy documents found in your online account. During the online enrollment process, we specifically ask new customers who are enrolling for the date of their pet’s last veterinary exam. We provide the following information in a pop-up window below the request for the exam date:

“We use your pet’s medical records to process claims. This exam date tells us that your pet has been examined by a veterinarian within the timeframe required by our policy.

Pets younger than 6 years old – We require a veterinary exam in the 12 months prior to enrollment.

Pets six years or older – We require a veterinary exam within the past 30 days.”

If enrolling over the phone with one of our customer care team, we will also ask for the above information.

Did everyone else who commented on this article get an e-mail from Healthy Paws Pet Insurance? I did. Now I know that Canine Journal gave them my e-mail address and this article is a mere advertisement.
