You come home from a long day at work only to realize you forgot to pick up dog food on the way home. As pet parents, we’ve all been there. But there’s an easy way to keep your home stocked with the dog food of your choice.

Whether you’re looking for fresh dog food meals, all-natural kibble or traditional dog food, we’ve got you covered. See which best dog food delivery services we’ve discovered for any need you have.

Article Overview

Best Dog Food Delivery Service

With so many different types of dog food delivery services, it’s impossible to choose a single winner. So we’ve chosen winners in several categories based on the kind of dog food you’re seeking as well as other top brands in each category.

One thing to note, particularly for the fresh, homemade and natural options — while these are pricier, you don’t necessarily have to switch your food 100% to that option as some suggest. Some dogs continue to eat a half portion of their traditional dried dog food (the crunching of which can help rid teeth of plaque) mixed with half a portion of fresh dog food so they get the benefits of both. Pet Plate, Ollie and JustFoodForDogs offer a “Topper Plan”.

Best Fresh Meal Delivery

These companies offer meals made from real, human-grade ingredients (meats, veggies, grains, etc.). This is the closest you can get to a meal you would make for Fido, but without all the hassle of planning, shopping and cooking. These fresh offerings are among the most nutrient-rich options on the market today.

Best For Fresh Meals: The Farmer’s Dog Review

The Farmer's Dog box with food next to it and dogVisit Website

Our pick for the best custom homemade dog food delivery service is The Farmer’s Dog, featuring human-grade, all-natural ingredients.

How does it work? You start by filling out a brief profile of your pup, which includes age, breed, weight, body shape, activity level, health issues and more. This profile allows them to customize your dog food’s ingredients and portion sizes.

They offer three recipe varieties, including turkey, beef and pork, that are pre-made and pre-portioned based on your dog’s profile. All food is human-grade, and each AAFCO-approved recipe comes packed with fruits, vegetables, lentils, fish oil and a blend of vitamins and minerals.

  • Choose from three healthy recipes (developed by board-certified ACVN veterinarian nutritionists): turkey, pork or beef
  • Human-grade ingredients with no preservatives or fillers
  • Food delivered within days of cooking (never deep frozen)
  • Plans can be customized and meals pre-portioned to best meet your unique needs
  • Auto-shipping or you can adjust shipping frequency and pause or cancel anytime
  • Free shipping with ability to ship more food at one time to reduce delivery frequency and environmental impact
  • Responsive customer service
  • Made in the USA
  • Since the food is so fresh, you may need to freeze it before it’s used up
  • More expensive compared to more traditional dog food options (kibble, homemade)

The Farmer’s Dog bases its pricing on your dog’s age, weight and other factors. Smaller dogs start at $2/day. The following price* is based on the profile of a mixed-breed male, 1 years old, 38 pounds, healthy size, neutered, no health problems or allergies.

  • $52.65*/week (2 recipes), shipped and billed every 3 weeks (you can customize shipping frequency)
  • Free shipping

Pet Plate Review

Pet Plate box with food in bowl and dogVisit Website

In early December 2016, Renaldo Webb pitched his company, Pet Plate, to Shark Tank in search of funding to expand his promising homemade pet food subscription business. Every recipe features human-grade, all-natural ingredients.

While he didn’t get the Shark Tank nod, he didn’t let that hold him back. Fast forward a few years — Pet Plate now has thousands of customers and delivers to all 48 contiguous U.S. states.

The ordering process involves a detailed profile for each pup, including age, weight, ideal weight, breed and activity level. This allows the company to provide a very customized meal plan for each pup. Choose from Chicken, Beef, Turkey and Lamb recipes, and you can pick how many of each for your shipments in the online portal. The company also offers a 50% “topper” option if you prefer to mix high-quality Pet Plate food with kibble to stretch it a little further.

  • Pet Plate comes in 4 recipes: beef, turkey, chicken or lamb
  • Human-grade, USDA-certified, all-natural, fresh ingredients with no preservatives or fillers
  • Two pet food subscription plans or custom
  • Auto-shipping that you can pause, skip or cancel anytime
  • Free shipping
  • 100% money-back guarantee
  • Responsive customer service
  • Made in the USA
  • Dog profile doesn’t take health issues into account
  • Takes up a lot of freezer space since it ships frozen in large plastic containers (#5)
  • Insulation in shipping containers is cumbersome and not compostable at home

Pricing is based on your dog’s age, weight and other factors. Smaller dogs start at $1.50/day. The following price* is based on the profile of a mixed-breed male, 1 years old, 38 pounds, healthy size, neutered, no health problems or allergies.

  • Full plan: $56.00*/week ($111.90 total) for 2 weeks of meals (3 recipes)
  • Topper plan: $23.95*/week ($95.80 total) for 6 20-oz containers shipped every 4 weeks

Ollie Review

Ollie logoVisit Website

Ollie is another homemade dog food delivery service, very similar to The Farmer’s Dog. Ollie works with specialized veterinarians to formulate their AAFCO-approved recipes. They offer four recipe choices (beef, turkey, chicken and lamb), all of which include high-quality proteins, fresh produce and healthy oils, vitamins and minerals.

You set up your dog’s profile (age, weight, breed, etc.) like other box subscriptions. The big difference is that The Farmer’s Dog allows you to include any health concern, such as diabetes or digestive problems, in your dog’s profile. Ollie only takes allergies into account for their customized meals.

  • Four recipes to choose from
  • Two pet food subscription plans
  • All-natural fresh ingredients with no preservatives or fillers
  • Auto-shipping that you can pause, skip or cancel anytime
  • Free shipping

  • Made in the USA

JustFoodForDogs Review

JustFoodForDogs logoVisit Website

Lesser-known JustFoodForDogs (JFFD) is another service that prepares human-grade, all-natural food for dogs. In business since 2010, JFFD delivers nationally and offers 8 recipes. When you sign up for a subscription, they ask you if your dog has any allergies or other health problems to determine the best customized recipes.

After you put your dog’s details in the JFFD website, it tells you how many calories your dog should ingest daily. Then you must select and purchase the food you want, so you must do some math to calculate what your dog needs. This leaves room for human error and you could accidentally over or under feed your dog.

JFFD has USDA-approved stand-alone pantries and a few inside select vet offices and Pet Food Express stores in California. The company also has a few stand-alone kitchens and one inside Petco’s flagship location in New York City’s Union Square, a result of a new partnership with Petco to build JFFD-branded pantries in some of its store.

  • 8 recipes (but they choose 1 for you based on dog’s dietary needs)
  • No fillers, by-products or preservatives
  • Can cancel or skip anytime
  • 30-day guarantee with full refund (for first-time orders)
  • Donates 1% of net sales to shelters and rescue organizations
  • Made in the USA
  • Meals are frozen
  • Delivery option is only 1x or 2x per month in most U.S. locations
  • Company recalled some batches of its food in early Jan. 2018 for listeria contamination
  • Does not calculate the food out for you, so there is room for error

JustFoodForDogs offers a 30-day satisfaction guarantee. The following price* is based on the profile of a mixed-breed male, 1 years old, 38 pounds, healthy size, neutered, no health problems or allergies.

  • Full plan: $52.78*/week ($105.56 total) for 2 weeks of meals (3 recipes)
  • 50% Topper plan: $26.60*/week ($53.20 total) for 2 weeks (3 recipes)

I just tried their 2-day delivery service. after 6 days I sought and received a full refund. You may want to re-test and refresh your list.

Unfortunately, we’ve read many complaints about Chewy’s delivery timeline. Glad you had a good experience, but until we see this happening for a majority of people, we will keep this note in the article. Hopefully this is a new normal for Chewy, though!

I loved Chewy, but they only use FedEx for delivery and they can screw up a one-car funeral. Then they lie about it. UPS has a great track record where I live but Chewy won’t use them, so I’ve had to take my business to Petco.

I agree with you Pam! FedEx is a train wreck Shipments take the long way around for sure and THEN Ground Delivery means they throw it on the ground at the end of your driveway (sometimes in a snow bank) with a note “Sorry we missed you” Very rarely do I sit at the end of my Block long plowed driveway.

My order from them via fedex made it to within 15 miles from me in California. Next thing I know, the next day it’s reported to be in route to Arkansas(?). I was refunded.

I had a subscription with PetFlow years ago and they made me feel like crap for canceling my dead dog’s subscription. They kept trying to push discounts to keep the sub and I was just bawling on the phone because they just refused to accept “my dog died” as an answer and this was after I tried to cancel without having to call and speak to a person and get myself all upset about it. It took me years before I would try another subscription service for my other pets even after several social media posts about how kindly Chewy treated customers grieving over a lost pet. If it wasn’t for these posts, I never, ever would have tried another subscription service for my pets. Ever. PetFlow’s cruel tactics are a deal breaker as far as I’m concerned and I have never been more angry at a company before in my life.

July 29, 2019 10:21 am

Chewy partnered up with PetSmart mainly to get more products on their site for us, the customer’s. Even though I’m not a fan of PetSmart, at the end of the day I need my pet supplies and Chewy is the best place to get them. Decent prices, amazing customer service, etc. When they partnered up with PetSmart, nothing drastically changed. They got 2 more delivery companies (LaserShip & Ontrac) which cater more to the east and west side folks to ensure that they get their packages quickly. The prices are the same and the customer service is definitely the same.

What people don’t seem to understand is that your pet products are being SHIPPED and DELIVERED by a shipping company. Of course you might get a dented can or a busted litter bag here and there. That’s to be expected. Whenever I have shipping issues and call into Chewy, they take care of it immediately from A to Z. I’ve seen so many changes in how my packages are being packed from adding cardboard spacers between certain items to them wrapping certain items in bubble wrap. It’s obvious that they’re taking all of their customer’s complaints seriously and are trying to improve daily.

Chewy is the best pet food retailer out there.

Kristy Champion
May 13, 2019 3:45 pm

Been using Chewy for years. Prices fair. Makes life easier. Receive damaged cans in almost every shipment. Some dents OK, but if dented to the point of broken seal and leaking food, then definitely throw in trash and send email to request credit. Never had a problem with customer service. Was getting pretty frustrated with the damage and having to email so often, but can see from “cons” that every shipping service has trouble with damage. Keep hoping packing methods and common sense (as in don’t pack fragile items with large, heavy ones) will improve, but who knows?

I, too, use Chewy. I am aggravated when the dog food comes 8 days later than their proclaimed 2-3 day shipping! I tried Amazon and their subscribe and save program is all screwed up! They will NOT, for example, set the auto ship for the first of every month and they took the funds from my account 7 days before the shipping date! I checked into Petflow and their dry bagged Blue Buffalo is a whopping $11 more a bag than Chewy, also they deliver ground shipping which is delivered 7 houses down at 7-10 days after purchase! In my humble, budget-minded, opinion, Chewy is by far the top of the heap in auto delivery dog food! It does annoy the crap out of me that they are now owned by Petsmart, however, other delivery services have a lot of improvjng to do before I can change my delivery plan!

Petflow is more promising and definitely more accurate with their ordering setup. i tried Chewy, usually my package is either stolen by some idiotic thief or the package was coming in damage formation. it’s usual an on going issue when i received or expect my package. i gave up on Chewy, sorry.

I have been a customer of chewy for the past 4 years and receive an auto-ship once a month in the rare occurrence that I have received dented cat food cans I simply called spoke to the person who answered the phone and the following day I received replacement for the case that has dented cans. I have never had to speak to more than one person and I have never had a problem having a product replaced I feed wellness no grain canned cat food to my cats into 12.6 Oz cans I called mid-month one time and order just a single case and I explained to the woman on the phone that I was on Social Security and that it was extremely hard to pay for my cat food sometimes she sent me an extra case of wellness which is approximately $32 and a sample case of some blue Buffalo cat food both for free.

November 28, 2018 3:42 pm

Chewy is a big disappointment in the customer service department. I called regarding ripped open/damaged items received – they put on unnecessary lid on already plastic wrapped cases of pet food – further free advertising, I guess – environmentally not a good idea, etc. They tell you what you want to hear- like they’re reading a cue card, then don’t do anything to resolve the problem. Instead you get passed around so you’re like going around in circles. Back and forth. Needless to say, I won’t be giving the thousands I spend a year on pet food to Chewy anymore.

Chewy has always and WILL always do what’s best for their customers. They use cardboard can toppers so that the cans have EXTRA protection while in transit in case the package gets tumbled around. Give them another shot and you wont be disappointed.

August 1, 2018 12:30 pm

Disappointed in Chewy…delivery was stolen but there was no confirmation that the delivery had occurred, which would have been helpful. They send spam every day, why not a delivery confirmation? Lots of confusion re-instating the order. I’ve canceled auto ship.

All you have to do is give them a call/email to take you off of the email list. I did it and now I only receive emails regarding my most recent order.

Nice overview. Needs a little more research though regarding the viability of Petflow. Petflow is owned by Phillips Feed Company. They have a specific announcement on their web site that since acquiring Petflow, they do not wish to grow the direct to consumer business. What does that mean for the consumer?

“. . . While PetFlow will continue to serve its existing customers, we want to be clear: we are not seeking to grow a business directly with consumers. PetFlow has about 140,000 customers today, which represents about 3 people per zip code. By our estimates, local pet stores have more than 150 customers in any given zip code, and we want to help you grow that number.” Prices are good, but at what point will they stop direct to consumer sales?
